Favorite store bought BBQ sauces? Looking for the best for my tastes

I'm trying to look for something new to try as I love BBQ sauce. I prefer sweet and/or smokey sauces. Not tomato based or vinegar based. The more vinegary to me the worse it is. Can't eat ultra spicy either, mild kick at most.

Some I tried already:

New Heinz line of sauces - they're decent enough, but nothing special.

Sweet Baby Rays - decent enough, but kinda tastes familiar since everyone uses it

KC Masterpiece - bleh

Bulls-eye - kinda like Sweet Baby Rays... decent and familiar, no problems ever using it, but kinda tired of it.

Stubbs - so many people love this, I hated it. Too vinegary... not my thing. Also tried their sweet version and didn't like that much either. Almost tasted like I was eating raw brown sugar liquified.

Kraft, other generic brands - bleh.

I've heard a lot of people recommend Daddy Sam's, Joe's Kansas City bbq, and Rufus Teague.

What is your favorite and what would you recommend for a sweet or smokey sauce?

My personal favorite store bought sauces are Jack Daniels Original no.7(for chicken and ribs etc) and the Heinz Carolina style for pulled pork.

The Jack Daniels is what you're looking for.

Great sauce , not to sweet, very mild kick. Great for dipping or cooking.

These are all decent. Most BBQ sauces taste pretty good to me. So I tend to buy whatever and try a lot of things.

Have you tried using Stubb's as a dipping sauce? I like heating it up and using it like that.

If you get a wild hair try a mustard sauce. They're also great.

I'm not a great cook, and I don't like spicy food. So all my shit is mild.

When I toss some chicken in the oven, I don't want to put too much effort, so it'll likely be one of these concoctions:

Shake and bake. You got it. Southern style crispy. The oiliest breadcrumb shit you can buy for a couple bucks and I love it. I think $2 per box. You're supposed to rotate it so it doesn't burn into a hard flat layer. Sometimes I forget to and I got to peel off the chicken from the parchment paper and the skin/coating is kind of burnt. Yum.

Cheap sauces made by Grace. Make note they are not spicy. For some of you, you'll think they taste like nothing. But fine for me. Like $3 a bottle.

The random bowl, which is a combo of whatever shit I feel like throwing in to make a sauce. I have no idea what I'm doing, but mix it up, slather this on defrosted chicken, shove it in the oven for an hour and it tastes fine. If you want hot. Put less BBQ sauce, and more hot sauce
- A bit of hot sauce
- Salt, pepper, basil powder, chili pepper flakes
- BBQ sauce, any mainstream shit like Sweet Baby Ray (as mentioned above)
- Lemon juice
- Bread crumbs
- A tiny bit of olive oil

I like the famous Dave’s one but no stores carry it so I’d have to order it online.

I actually tried the sticky fingers sweet carolina a couple weeks back, but had a horrible issue later that night. I never knew if it was from the sauce or if I caught a stomach bug or if it was something else so I was afraid to try it again because that night was horrible. The sauce tasted good though I liked it a lot.

Guinness Bullseye and anything Bourbon and Brown Sugar (usually Guy Fieri) are my family’s favorites.

There's a really good one that Ralph's used to sell, it was $10 a bottle, really great stuff. I'll have to try to remember which brand it was. I'll search for it and post it eventually

Sweet Baby Ray's Maple is my favorite store bought flavor. But looking at the ingredients it has what you don't want. I don't think it tastes anything like those though.

Head Country Hot is good or just use the original Head Country with some generous grinds of black pepper. My wife has a very strong sweet tooth and goes wild for Sweet Baby Rays. I like it too in moderation.

+1 for Sweet baby Ray's

It hits the spot, and may not be the BEST in the world, but it's definitely an acceptable sauce.

If your in Utah J dawgs has my favorite sauce. Salt lick is the best mustard base bbq sauce out there too. I don't like smokey sludge.

Sweet baby Rays taste like ketchup

terrible
I hear a lot of people say that about BBQ sauces and tomato sauces. I've never tasted a BBQ sauce or tomato sauce in my life that has ever tasted like ketchup. Now that doesn't mean some aren't bad, but they don't taste anything like ketchup.

I had to learn a long time ago that it's better to perfect your own recipe. Store-shelf bbq sauces are abhorrent.

There was a great 'Budweiser' BBQ sauce. But I haven't seen it lately.

Super Smokers Texas Hot was great!

Bah gawd, it’s the best BBQ in town!

Seriously, though... I’ve only been eating Sweet Baby Ray’s Honey BBQ for a while now, but KC Masterpiece is good too. I like all types of BBQ, though.

One of the GOAT bbq sauces. It’s on the sweet side though, and that’s the one thing I dislike about it. If it had more smoke and used stevia instead of cane sugar, and were a bit thicker then it might have been the best. I’m pretty sure the Black Angus restaurants use this exact same bbq sauce though

I’m not a bbq sauce guy, I hate ketchup and to me they all taste like ketchup for the most part. I also think it belongs only on ribs. With those caveats out of the way this is my favorite sauce. It’s sweet, but a light glaze on the ribs 30 minutes before you pull them out of the smoker goes a long way.

I like Chorley's while my kids like Reds.

Not sure about availability, Reds is pretty common in the UK but chorleys is apparently only sold in 7 shops and they're all in Cornwall.

Since I made the thread I’ve tried Daddy Sam’s and Joe’s Kansas City. Both were very good, but IMO not good enough to order online regularly and pay the shipping expenses. I’ll try some of the others recommended here if I see them at the supermarket. I do like sweeter sauces so I’d probably like bone suckin sauce.

Sticky Fingers is excellent for Ribs.

If you want to try something completely different I would recommend trying White sauce that is unique to Alabama. Big Bob Gibson's is the best known White sauce. Using it with Chicken or pork is excellent.

We put Sweet Baby Ray's on everything here. Know a couple transplants from up north who swear by Open Pit.

I for the life of me don’t get why people like Stubbs. I guess people just have different tastes. I prefer sweet, Smokey, tangy, or zesty tomatoey. I am not a fan of anything that is strong in vinegar, I fucking hate vinegar.

I tried a few different Stubbs ones and they were all terrible. One I got tasted like they ground down a ginger bread cookie and liquified it into sauce, it was disgusting and I can usually stomach any bbq sauce even if I’m not a big fan, but this I had to wipe it off and use another sauce.

I still haven’t tried Bone Suckin Sauce, I think if I order another brand online, that will be my next. I also tried Rufus Teague. A lot of sites recommended it. I wasn’t a fan. Some sauces there’s too strong of a hint of Worcestershire. Starting my next round of trying new sauces for this summer. Most of the ones listed here I can’t find in stores and would have to order.

Famous Dave’s Devil Spit
Kinder’s original and sugar free

And I’ve also got a killer, easy to make Carolina style recipe that’s alllll vinegar baby:
1 cup - Apple cider vinegar
1 cup - white vinegar
1 tablespoon each - salt , course pepper, brown sugar, hot sauce and 2 teaspoons of crushed red pepper.

…I should go get some meat to smoke

It's because their dry rub is where it's at. Stop buying the damn sauce and slandering Stubb's name.

Good meat don’t need no sauce
Yep and asking for the best store-bought sauce is a joke. They're all shit. If you have to use a sauce, make your own otherwise don't ruin your meat.
There’s definitely drier bbq styles out there that are good too but if you can’t get down with a variety of styles, including sweet and tangy and vinegary, you’re missing out. And obviously we’re not talking about A1 on a rib-eye here
