If there are two things that I think are genuine social perception problems in the US one of them would be blithely believing in the miraculous American dream to the point of ignoring fundamental flaws in our socio-political-economic systems, but the other would be how much trouble so many Americans seem to have with the idea that some other nation could ever do anything better then us and that we could learn from them. I see it with the Metric resistance and I see it with resistance to ideas like healthcare reform. Its just unthinkable that the US should look at any other countries and examine what they've done, everything we do has to be uniquely "American"

why would i envy a country that doesn't have public healthcare?

We don't need public healthcare. We make more money than you and pay a relatively small amount to get better care than 99% of the rest of the world ever will, we can chose whatever doctor we like and any course of treatment. Of course you have to earn good money to do this and not EVERYONE gets it, but that's the other great thing: if you want it and are willing to bust your ass for it, you can have practically anything you want. Go team USA. That said I love other countries and cultures. The above is just fact.

You honestly believe that millions of people who work grueling spirit-draining jobs forty hours a week to barely support their families just aren't working as hard as those who are comfortable?

It really is very difficult to tell who is being sincere in this thread and who is just taking the piss.

if the rest of the world is so cool why dont they use kelvin>?

One answer might be that each Celsius degree equals one Kelvin degree. So conversion cannot be easier. The Celsius scale's 0 and 100 degree points are pretty well defined and easy to grasp and remember to the average folk for everyone. It is simpler to use 0C than 273.16K, for example.

That's not what I was implying. Also:

Disclaimer: I work a 40 hour per week spirit draining job and I have a family. But I realize that's a direct result of choices I made in my past. That said I'm also in school and have an opportunity to leave that life behind. So there!

Because it's weird to say that it's 303 Kelvin when you mean 30 degrees. It's not really intuitive. Kelvin is a good scale when we are talking about the Cosmos but not for temperature on Earth.

Oh dear God.
The self-hate from Americans on this board sometimes is absurd to the point of hilarious.

Busting your ass includes preparing yourself to not be in that position. It's a choice.

Why shouldn't the current standard baseline quality of life position for citizens who hold steady employment be higher then it is currently? Is there a good reason not to improve the services and comforts everyone has access to if we can?

Dude. I fucking love America. That's why I'm pissed off. I fully feel that it has the potential to be the greatest nation on earth and it makes me incredibly frustrated that it isn't currently. I want nothing more then to see this country be a fantastic bastion of freedom and comfort. You seem to be actually proving my point: suggesting that America doesn't do everything best is now "self-hate"

your point?

Why aren't they following UK's cultural influences? And like you say yourself, the english language is everywhere now, I wonder why!

Nobody is arguing you that the USA hasn't got the greatest influence. People are arguing that it does not mean its the best.

If you truly want to nitpick you can see everywhere that more often than not the loudest people have the bigger influence, not necessarily are they the smartest or the greatest. Which reminds of another con. The radical Christianity movements which even try to equate creationism with evolution in schools. Some would even ban the latter.

EDIT: I am astonished how some of you don't want to accept any criticism in order to truly become the greatest nation in the world.

You really do love to jump to conclusions don't you?
I don't think America does everything best. I don't care about being best.
All I care about is what you do, freedom and good living.

However, you are making these vast sociological diagnoses about the American character at large because people don't want to switch to the Metric system, it's retarded.

So according to you, our genuine social problems are blatantly ignoring problems (which seems to be untrue at face-value considering all anyone does anymore is complain about how the system is broken) and that Americans are so arrogant that we refuse to learn anything from other countries.

I don't know how socially active you are, but I would suggest you get out and talk to people. Literally never in my life have I seen anyone act the way you seem to think is typical of the average American.
Maybe I'm just fortunate, but I doubt that is all that is going on here.

you know why people in america have little knowledge of the rest of the world? Because sadly, a large majority doesn't give a shit about anyone else.

same can't be said the other way around. you could call that envy.

dur dur, Americans stupid. I know.

criticism welcome about USA, hell, show me a single american who doesn't criticize it and I'll be stupified. The bolded is where you fail, it should say "In order to become even more, the greatest nation in the world."

For the first attitude look no further then plenty of threads here on GAF (and depressingly, in current political rhetoric) where the logical fallacy of "anyone can succeed means everyone can succeed" gets bandied about. If you give ten hardworking intelligent people five opportunities, five of those people are going home empty-handed no matter what. It is amazing how far I have seen some people try to go to try and argue that anyone can be successful regardless of context.

For the second attitude I'm pulling directly from the more conservative branches of my extended family which I don't believe are marginal opinions.
