MOSCOW — A suicide bomber attacked a bus in Volgograd, Russia, on Monday, killing at least 5 people and wounding more than 25, officials said, a case in which the violence of the turbulent North Caucasus apparently spilled into the Russian heartland.

Witnesses said an explosion tore through the bus at about 2 p.m., and officials quickly designated the bombing as a terrorist attack.

Video taken by a car’s dashboard camera and broadcast on the television channel Rossiya 24 showed a bright orange flame bursting from the center of the bus, which then virtually disappeared in a cloud of black smoke, as debris was hurtled across the three-lane roadway.

Local news agencies reported that investigators were focusing on the possibility that the attacker was a woman whose identity papers were found near the explosion. The local reports quoted officials who said the woman had been married to a leader of a rebel group in Dagestan, the predominantly Muslim republic in the North Caucasus where Russian security forces have been engaged in a fierce effort to suppress separatists.

Volgograd, previously known as Stalingrad, is about 520 miles north of Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, or just about halfway to Moscow

Damn that looked scary. When you think of these suicide bombs you always think of stationary targets. Never expect to see a bus blow up just driving down a highway.

Happened before in the UK 2005. Guy I used to know was in shock over it as that was a route he used to take back when he was originally living there.

And what has it ever accomplished? Can anyone name a government that has fallen due to terrorist attacks?

Its not about taking down a govt, but driving fear into the populace which creates change for everyone. You want a prime example of terrorism being effective look at what happened to the US after 9-11, with all the idiotic security measures that just harass the average citizen and are pretty useless for the most part. They left a mark on society and history and to them thats a victory.

Isn't that how the beginning roots of Bolshevism in Russia started? Even after they took over they continued terrorizing their population.

Edit - And don't forget North Korea.

Edit 2 - Oh, and the Nazi's were adept at terrorism before and after they took over.

Say what you will about Putin but he knows how to handle Chechen Islamic terrorists.

The response will be swift, brutal and quick as it should be when dealing with these brainwashed morons.

Just tragic.

I am not trying to defend the bombers even slightly, but have Putin's "swift, brutal, and quick" tactics really done much to stop terrorist attacks from occurring? I admit to not being the most informed about the situation in the North Caucasus, but clearly attacks are persisting even after 13 years of Putin.

The three regimes you list came to power through a coup, a foreign military occupation, and a democratic election (followed by decidedly undemocratic repression), respectively. Not sure what your point is here unless you're using a meaninglessly broad definition of terrorism.

Killing innocent civilians is never justifiable, but the whole Chechen situations goes way beyond just "brainwashed morons". Russia has done some horrific things to these people for a very long time, and that sort of stuff tends to affect people in bad ways. Couple that with opportunistic assholes spreading filth from overseas, and you get this.

While sure it may be propaganda, still might want to read it nonetheless.

Read up on what the Russians did in Chechnya and you'll probably understand. Good ol blowback.

It's like a lot of people think that the Chechens just woke up one day and decided to just go blow things up. How many people here know that during WWII the entire Chechen ethnic group were rounded up, and deported in mass to Kazakhstan and Siberia. The majority of whom perishing along the way. A few years back, the European Parliament recognized it as a genocide.

This sort of person is called a "black widow." A female in full garb rigged to blow in random areas is currently impossible to stop.

Sort of associated with this incident, I found this post on reddit: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/01/sms-suicide-bomber/

An unexpected and unwanted text message from a wireless company prematurely exploded a would-be suicide bomber’s vest bomb in Russia New Year’s Eve, inadvertently thwarting a planned attack on revelers in Moscow, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Damn. That sucks. Russia seems to have a disproportionate number of dash cams. I feel like half the videos on LiveLeak are dash cams from Russia. What's up with that? PEACE.

There is so much insurance fraud in Russia, that dashboards cams are basically required now. Everybody has them.

On the contrary, I was actually about to post that there seems to be a prevalence of suicide bombers in buses and cars. Just yesterday there was that one in Syria with the truck that killed 30+.

Maybe it's because it doesn't get reported as much but I on the other hand think of the opposite. Moving targets such as public buses etc are much easier targets for scum like terrorists. I'm from Sri Lanka...I know it very well

Thats because for vehicles that are self "packed" by the terrorists you can get in a fair amount of explosives which ups the amount of potential damage to be delt from not only the blast itself but secondary missiles created from fragments of the device and whatever it was packed in, along with other objects in the near vicinity of the explosion. Which are generlaly classified as an VBIED (Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device).

An example of one used within the US would be the Oklahoma City bombing incident which McVeigh used a Ryder truck to transport / house the explosives which destroyed the federal building.

For the examples of why vehicles or things like buses are used is more the fact that its an easy way to blend in with the crowd. Esp if its a route said person has been taking for an extended period of time so one would not look out of place. The Syria incident was a VBIED where this one is a suicide bomber (explosives attached to person).
