Granted wikipedia isnt 100% accurate all the time it can give general information to go off of then up to said person to further that by searching on their own.

I learned about Chechnya after reading the news about what happened at the Beslan school crisis, or in Boston earlier this year... I think it's pretty hard to get popular opinion on your side after whats happened.
