The fact is, people started complaining that "riots accomplish nothing!". Evidence was shown that this is not always the case. Now people are backpedaling and saying some riots are have noble elements, but these are just selfish looters. The people making these statements have no knowledge of the history of civil uprisings. Their opinions are not based on facts. What this is about is looking down on black communities for behaving in an "uncivilized" manor. People want to judge black people for using violence to express their anger, but remain silent when the police repeatedly inflict violence on the black community. It's criticizing the bullied for lashing out, and it's pathetic. If you hate riots that do damage to impoverished communities, then direct your anger at the capitalist state and violent police force that created these conditions. Does anyone remember when this thread was about a dead teenager?

You assigned motives to people from exactly nothing and then called it logic. That's not how it works. You know at most *what* happened, but probably not been that. You have no more access to *why* it happened than anyone else who isn't there.
No not from nothing.
We have facts. We have a person shot in what people consider to be an injust way by a large majority of a community in St. Louis. We have people peacefully protesting the way the police department handled the entire situation. We have people breaking into businesses and other places and taking materials from these businesses.
If we look at it logically, which is why I used that word logic by the way, we can conclude that the two groups of people have different motives that may come from the same frustration or may not. However, there is nothing to be gained by the peaceful protesters in violently looting and destroying people's property. This will not change how the police handle these situations in the future which is something I'd assume they'd want.
I welcome discussion, but gotta say, you've been really dismissive and snarky and it's going to confuse the issue into a more ad hominem thing which I'm sure no one here really wants.

The looters are no better than the crooked cops. How does this make it safer to live in the neighborhood that Michale's family lives in? The family and protesters are tired of police treating their community like a warzone so some of the people decide to take advantage of the situation and turn the community into a warzone.

It's all great to believe the former is better than the latter. I tend to think so. But you're still assigning motives and that isn't appropriate.
You've called this situation "fruitless" but how can you even declare that some paltry hours into the disobedience? It's literally impossible to say if these actions will bear fruit yet. Your whole thing is an argument from prejudice.
None of which is to say these riots are even "good". Sometimes people do bad shit when they're up against the wall. Are these people rioting otherwise "good"? Is "otherwise good" even a useful concept? Is violence never justified? You've never even gotten to these questions.

I go back and forth about holding a cell phone out in a situation like that. It is dark and extremely tense and may be mistaken, but filming it is incredibly useful.

Just as a note, MLK wasn't a pacifist, he argued many times in favor of the use of violence towards self-defense against injustice if necessary.

Only if you are at war with the occupying army, that's not happening here. If this community is being treated like a war zone by an occupying force, why are they sabotaging their own community? It's the equivalent of blowing up your own water and electric plants because you are simply at war.
Right here Police are just going from store to store trying to stop these people from trashing the entire city.
