FFXII Update!

Whoops, I didn't see this edit.

From the impressions I read from the Square Enix Party, it sounds like they're set with a certain weapon type. Even IGN comments on it (from the same article I linked above):...but for all I know, that may only apply to the demo.

If you've seen any info on being able to use different kinds of weapons, though, go ahead and a throw a link my way, because I totally missed it.
just did a quick search and came up with an old post of Duckroll's

http://ga-forum.com/showpost.php?p=903331&postcount=90

hmm...damn =\

Bad capture quality or not, those all look great to me. Because the graphics and their exact quality are walking hand-in-hand with the gameplay mechanics. And come on - by this point on this generation of hardware, what do people expect anyway?

All things considered FFXII looks elite for this generation.

Sorry. Those little cutscene screens have ALWAYS been much higher quality than actual in-game stuff.

The in-game stuff really does look terrible and VERY low poly.

You do know that the levels are huge and have zero loading right? And that all the enemies are present on the map while walking around?

Of course huge areas with tons of enemies + your three characters are gonna look a bit worse than cutscenes with a few characters in a tiny environment.

Oli, the game looks awesome. Trust me, I've played all 3-4 hours of the E3 2004 demo, and the 30min sections of the Square-Enix 2005 demo. The textures in the game (especially on the characters) blows away any other rpg to date and the animation even for the enemies is better than pretty much anything to date in an rpg. FFXII is the real deal and we only have 6 months until it's in some of our hands :)

:D :D

Wait, you have six months. We probably have a year. :/

Not really.

It's not going this route due to fan outcry, complaints, declining sales, to clone KotOR, or whatever other reason people like to make up for it. Instead, it's going this direction simply because Matsuno wanted to make a single-player game that utilized a lot of MMO aspects, such as the encounter/aggro systems, the psuedo-real-time combat, etc. He's said as much himself.

Hopefully it won't fall on deaf ears like the Westernized (and Fah-REAKING awesome) aspects of VS did over there. SUPPORT THIS MAN'S VISION! :P

Is it too much to ask if you can give us some er.. obsessively detailed impressions? :D :D

Also: can you share some info on weapons? Will characters be able to use only the type of waeapons they are designed for or is there a weapon proficiency system in place?

I second the "obsessively detailed impressions" bit, Bebpo, if you're willing to take the time. :)

Yeah, but it's not so bad, as there's more than enough to play in the meantime.

That's why I never understood the actual hate people got towards companies for delays. I'm juggling a huge backlog as it is, and one less game out of the Fall/Winter rush of wallet-raping isn't going to piss me off. If anything, it just makes me more relieved. It's more money in my pocket, and more time to spend on other games... Where's the bad here?

Unless you only play this one series, just get over it and play something else for now. Games are about fun, not sitting on a message board sending hate rays towards <insert company here> for a delay. Well, that's what I'm told, at least. ;)

O_O

Thanks. Sounds awesome. :D

What about the world map? Are we back to the pre-FFX open map, or we're stuck with one-click destinations forever?

You think this is a hate ray? That's nothing. :) I'm not too upset since Dragon Quest 8 will be out in November. I think this is the first time I've commented on FF12 delay. Also, I'm actually a pretty picky gamer. There are only a small handful of games this fall/winter that I want. Fortunately one of those games is Dragon Quest 8. Most of them of Square Enix RPGs. :lol

Well, I meant in general. ;)

Like when the news of Final Fantasy XII's release date hit, it seemed like everybody wanted to collectively butcher every Square Enix employee and their families. A less-explodet-esque situation happened when the Advent Children delay news hit earlier, with people so angry they're not even going to buy it anymore (Arr...). It's just insane how pissed off people get about this stuff, is all.

And personally, I've got a lot of my plate this Fall/Winter... too many to list here, in fact. I'm sure I'll put a lot of them off until next year, though, so it's not too bad. Actually, when I think about it, I'm still catching up on games from last year's holiday rush... *sigh* I'm never catching up. :(

Here's my post from when I got back from the show: http://forums.gaming-age.com/showpost.php?p=1712550&postcount=348

You weren't able to switch weapons in the demo nor was there even a menu screen to look at stats/proficiency/etc... in the SE show demo. I thought there was a status screen in the E3 2004 demo but that was so long ago my memory of then is pretty bad. Since it was a year and a half ago I don't remember too much other than the playable section with the knights on top of a castle was completely awesome. Great cutscenes, cool environments, badass knights...it was good stuff. The section were you walked around the city was pretty neat. Felt more like KoTOR with this huge city that must've been 10+ screens (loads for a sec between them) big with characters walking around and living their lives IIRC. Then you just walked out of the city into a desert area kinda like the desert town in KoTOR1 and could fight things. The dungeon demo which went from the early trailer stuff in the arena was pretty fun too, had a cool boss.

After both demos I'm still uncertain about the battle system. I think it may end up being too shallow like KoTOR. But then again this is super-deep-hard-gameplay Matsuno were talking about and so I have faith when we get the final version there will be a lot of depth to it. But battle system aside, I have no doubt that the dungeons, overworld gameplay, and story will be top-notch. So I'll just keep hoping the battle system ends up good (fingers crossed) ^^;

This game just seems so far away...
it has for the past 4 years.

...and for god sake... please show some new locations/characters/etc. @ TGS!
At one point somebody (maybe Matsuno or Itou) said this would have the largest cast in any FF game- dunno if that meant playable characters or not, but it's starting to feel like FFXII only takes place in one set of locations (a city, a beach, an underground dungeon, and a forest) and we've been seeing the same 5 characters for years.

I'd say my patience is wearing thin... but after delay #2362182, it's really not bad anymore.

I actually think it's more exciting since there are hardly any spoilers and this huge game is basically unknown to us. But to each his own.

With game's like Burnout Revenge, with their image quality, I don't understand why FF games have to look like this. But that said, can't take nothing away from the art and concepts used in the game. Their more ambitious than nearly any studio out there when it comes to that. Can't wait to go through this title. Buuuuut, I won't talk about it anymore. Screw Square for the delay. Bastards.

Hmm..not really digging the battle system (I shouldn't have peeked at topic). But at least bebpo and some others can blab about the game while we play in March.

should have gone with turn-based...

But ohw ell, it's Final Fantasy afterall. I <3 the series

I dunno, I don't get the hate aimed at the battle-system in this game - particularly when we really don't know exactly how it operates or flows from experience yet. I really like the battles in FFXI, so something that emulates than in a single-player environment is at least a welcome experiment to me. The way the world has been remade to be more MMORPG-like is also welcome as it finally gives the FF series this feeling of expansiveness that's been found in PC RPG's for a while (not counting KOTOR, which IMO felt about as stagnant and small as FFX).

It's still turn-based.

It should work like FFXI, or for a single-player comparison, like KotOR. It'll offer both an auto-combat solution (via Gambits), where your characters will continue to attack at set intervals (note the ATB bar), as well as offer a completely manual solution if you'd prefer to play that way instead. Some of the Square Enix Party impressions, for instance, note a "Wait" option, where you can manually select all of your commands from menus for you and your allies.

About the only "real-time" bits would be casting spells, using special skills, calling forth summons, etc, much like the two games I noted above. However, if it works like FFXI (and I hope it does, in this instance), there will be a charge time attached to the abilities, so you have to wait x amount of seconds (or minutes, hours, ...) before being able to use it again. Summons work on a timer, I believe, so they'll be limited as well.

'Course, I haven't had any hands-on time with it myself, so I'm just relying on impressions, and experience with the 2 games it gets compared to all the time... So anybody that's played it can feel free to correct me if I got anything wrong. :P
