I don't think MK's success is anywhere near what it was in the 90s. That was gigantic with news reports and everything about it. The game's less shit now than it was back then, but I don't think you can really make an argument that it's more popular now than back then.

Obviously yes, the netcode is ass and the punishing nature of the game makes the netcode even more insufferable. However, people who can perform well in that environment have a very unique skillset in terms of what they can tolerate.

Also Terry Bogard is another example of online warrior who has been on the rise as well as Cloud. There are quite a few other players who have gained something from playing the game online so it's not a complete failure.

I see people doing like left/right stuff in MKX and people getting hit by it. I'm assuming the people getting hit just are bad and not holding block or hitting stuff, but is there a point to cross overs besides getting pressure or positioning?

I presume an additional benefit is to confuse their next motion direction or fuck up buffering.

Do you mean moves that come from behind like an off the screen teleport special? Those things are super fast and hard to react to online. If you are not used to those moves you will get hit by them a lot.

What's weird about mk's success is that while it's fucking super huge in the mainstream the nrs community seems so small compared to sf etc. Wonder why huge sales didn't result in a huge scene and if that will change this time.

Jumping punch in MK9 and MKX is a full combo on hit and is +infinity on block. If it connects at all you get something awesome (remember that the fastest way to build meter is to have your normals/strings blocked).

At close range, when you jump over someone, your jumping punch or kick will autocorrect. If this is attempted and your opponent was blocking, but then they try something, the jump punch will probably connect since they have to let go of block to try something.

It's a semi-common scenario. People that get hit by the jump punches are trying the counter the jump punch but are either doing it wrong or just let go of block.

In MK9 some characters could reliably counter a jump over punch with crouching 1 (front punch) but in MKX I'm not sure yet.

MK sells very well, but most buy it for the single player content.
