Fighting Games Weekly | August 20-26

This.

What ever happened to playing video games? If Fchamp and Jwong really just want money at the end then they should be playing LoL or something else entirely.

fanatiq said it on stream "when you are young playing for fun is great, but when you start getting them bills your priorities change"

but still PAYPUH IS RUINING FGC #BibleThump

I think money is important in the FGC in a lot of ways. Bigger prize pots = faster developments in technology (since level of competition should be higher). More sponsorships = more players can attend more events. More funding into events = a better experience for everyone (not necessarily, but a T.O. can do more for his constituents with more money).

One of the biggest reasons why the South isn't as respected as the coasts is because of money. I firmly believe our top talent can hang with the top talent across the country, but we all live so far apart that most of our biggest tournies down here will only represent 1-2 of our best players. The economy in the South is terrible and a lot of people are too broke to travel 30 minutes to a tournament (personal experience) so how can we expect people to drive 3+ hours? Of course smaller tournaments also have to deal with not being able to compete with bigger tournaments in terms of prize payout. ARK V is this weekend and me and my partner are putting in $1200 of our own dollars into bonus pots. We're probably going to lose money. The sad thing is... $1200 is nothing compared to the $50k that Revelations promised. I don't think we'll EVER be able to compete on that sort of level. The money/market just isn't there for the South, especially at this point in time.

Money helps justify traveling costs. It helps level people up. It helps players get sponsors and it helps sponsors get business. If someone is making a ton of money playing a fighting game, that's AWESOME. You know people are going to get hungry for that money and they're going to train their butts off to get to that level.

Money isn't necessarily evil. It's when people shun everything else and ONLY think about the money where it becomes a problem.

I think the issue w/ Fanatiq, though, boils down to where people draw the line in "how" you earn that money.

Definitely. I'm all for people working hard to earn money from tournaments and them being compensated well for it, but if you have to overlook shady stuff or do shady stuff to make your living doing it, then it seems a bit gross.

what does that mean. People only hang out with Champ for his money?

I think Lando meant that Champ is "that" friends. A good guy but a personality that makes him hard to be around. He joked, "and he gives me money" after he said that it's hard to be friends with him.

The population density thing's just an unfortunate reality- to level up you need to be facing good players as often as possible- success/exposure breeds success.

So Sven gets asked if Capcom would be willing to reuse the gdlk UMvC3 engine in a new game, but he gives a different kind an answer:
Good ideas all around. As you might surmise, there's nothing specifically I can talk about with regard to our future fighting games or the strategy surrounding them but I will say we have a variety of challenges ahead of us.

We have a current gen that is losing some steam at retail (retail software revenues down approximately 27% year to date) and our more recent fighting efforts did not fare as well as I would have liked, contributing to that downward turn. We have a looming next generation of hardware coming. And we also have PC to consider, with potentially changing business models all around.

Lots of things for us to work out as we consider the future of our business (not just fighting games). And as you know, it takes literally years (multiple) to make a game. It's going to be a little while until we're ready to talk about what's next.
Yeah it sounds a lot like a stock answer Sven gives to everything, but it's kind of a good representation of all the PR stuff Capcom's been putting out and their plans for the future. Implies we might not see a fighting game until next gen and their business approach might be different too, consider new opportunities that may be on next-gen consoles and looking to PC. It might be quite a while to Darkstalkers as the excitement and hints may have just been premature excitement from it being greenlit
but lets hope for TGS anyways.

So SF X T underperformed but its still getting support post launch but MVC performed better than XT and theres nothing left for it. GGs

The "support" is not really support. They're just unlocking completed content. Imagine if they released UMvC3 without colors then unlocked one set of colors every three weeks, that's SFxT.

People are talking about the official tournament that gets you a car, etc.

Theres also that rebalancing that is happening if im not mistaken including potentially rebalancing all of the dlc characters.

Marvel got support post launch in the form of Ultimate which included additional characters, rebalancing and some system changes. SFxT so far has released the dlc characters and some minor rebalancing.

In regards to the tournament, Marvel isn't included because it isn't a street fighter game. Just because it has characters from SF doesn't make it one. MvC is its own separate entity.

Yes, yes YES

Based Harada needs to "look into PC" as well.

Capcom is taking way too long with the balance patch. They were talking about it months ago and we still have basically no news about it.

I didn't think there was a real interest/market in this sort of thing. Didn't mean to offend anyone. I see some guys got real defensive.

No worries. "Let's play" videos have been around for a while, and I never really got into them before, but Spooky's generally a pretty entertaining dude to listen to. So hearing Spooky talk about the game while playing through something I enjoyed as a kid makes for a nice relaxing way to kill a few minutes at a time.

Speaking of Spooky, he's at Next Level getting ready for Big Two: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=di-OzEjTk-A

A new disc is not "support" and it will never EVER be.

I remember Sixfortyfive saying the same thing. That is not support.
