Fighting Games Weekly | Dec 9-15 | Funding Nemo? Not yet...

For 3D titles, unless you're really, really, really thinking way ahead that you're going to be using rollback-based netcode, you will likely have to choose between having less prediction frames to work with (having to sample the skeleton for everything -> having to sample anims and transforms during rollbacks -> clear extra CPU tax), or spending a non-trivial amount of memory (baked skeletons per frame) to ensure you can generate as many prediction frames as possible without losing framerate.

Baking doesn't *have* to take that much memory. For starters what's needed is the hitboxes, not the skeletons, so that's already not that much data. For SF4, count around a dozen hitboxes max per frame, and proper quantization will give you around twelve bytes per hitbox (and roughly the same for capsules, for the games that use them), so ~150 bytes per frame, which is pretty compact already. For 60fps sampling, one megabyte gives you 111 seconds of hitboxes, which should be enough for a full SF4 animation set IIRC Then realize that you don't actually have to sample your hitboxes at 60fps, you can perfectly do it like 2D games and contend with only a handful of hitbox keyframes per move, and the memory requirement for hitboxes will be, well, the same they are for 2D games.

Wait wait wait...

At 1:04:20, is it me or did Poison keep her fireball cancel from SFxT, without it costing any meter?

You mean this?

KxYvXJu.png

It looks like her focus attack to me. Or did you mean something else?

Aaaah yeah, silly me, it's just her regular FA!
I'm even more dumb because when seeing it the first time I told myself "ouh nice, it's the same animation as her fireball, so maybe it could be used as a bait...". :D

didn't know that. i'm surprised kbr and abegen got more votes than chris g and fchamp

it wasn't clear that the votes were the ONLY way someone would get in. I think a lot of people assumed folks like chris g and fchamp were auto-ins so they voted for "extras".

YOO based casperOne too stronk with his pools

good shit dude, looking forward too see what will be done during the finals Saturday

Thanks, much appreciated.
And I know you initially voted "no"; THE EYE OF THE ILLUMINATI SEES ALL!

Combo is going to be calling out polls on stream, so you won't have to be on the results page in order to vote, you can just enter it into Twitch chat however you normally do (through the site, the app, IRC client, *whatever*).

It was important to make sure to not take people away from viewing the stream in order to interact/vote.

He's going to keep it simple, like "1 for X, 2 for Y" so that the barrier to participate will be as low as possible and we can get the most feedback possible.

Thanks, much appreciated.

I was testing it ;D

Ya'll hype for that marvel announcement?

Gonna set the bar low and assume it's MVC:Origins for Gen 8 consoles.
Hahaha.
I think Capcom has burned out the general public in terms of their upscaled arcade game ports with online play.

I mean who was really rushing out to buy Darkstalkers Resurrection at $15? Obviously fighting game enthusiasts like us will buy them at that price, but most people just see a port of and old fighting game and complain that it's $15...

There are still a few games I'd like to see get the Iron Galaxy treatment though:

1: SF Alpha 2 + 3
2: Arcade perfect Super Turbo
3: CVS1 + 2.
Although it'll never happen

Thanks, much appreciated.

Man that's awesome.

Much appreciated! I can't say enough how much I appreciate it when someone appreciates the work (of course, criticism and suggestions are also appreciated, but you don't get those same feels if it's scathing).

That said, I'm hoping to get the results page to update in the page (instead of you having to refresh); if so, great, if not, it will be in there the next time you see this utilized.

Good stuff with the polls casperone.
Rrmeally enjoy when stream monsters can interact with stream

Which reminds me, I'm still cracking up at when fanatiq got everyone to spam the Toronto top tiers stream with that tweet about justin costing fanatiq money because he bopped joker too hard

Hey, this is a smart way to approach the topic and I agree it would generally work for 2.5d fighters.

FGC can't afford ultradavid though. not unless david wants to get paid in top ramen. wonder if any of the bigger videogame streamers on youtube have contacted david.

very few yt people make enough money for significant payments to lawyers. even fewer now!

sometimes i think "why am i like the only lawyer specializing in this" and then i go "oh yeah because making money"

For MvC4 they should add Leon and have him play like MvC2 Jill. Just random thoughts I have throughout the day. I guess Chris is a little reminiscent of that, but I hate Chris.

I like Chris as a character in the game, just dislike that they went with his Resident Evil 5 model vs classic Chris. I am not sure if Capcom is too keen on making another crossover with Marvel considering profits weren't huge on MvC3.

Didnt they say that Marvel eventually sold pretty well, just not initially?

MvC3 sold very, very well. UMvC3 did not.
UMvC3 sold under 600k in its launch window and over its extended lifespan sold 500k more. I don't know how that isn't a success. 1 million is impressive as is (realistically many games don't even reach that amount), then you factor in it being released 9 months after MvC3 and the backlash Capcom got and its pretty impressive.

I mean, it's not a failure, but it's not really great - casual players seemed very reluctant to pick up a second copy here on GAF.

Good stuff, dude. This is going to be really fun with Combofiend coming up with questions. One question, though: I voted on the test page but I had to refresh to see my vote counted. Does it automatically refresh after a set amount of time or something? How 'live' is the vote updating?

UMvC3 had half the sales of MvC3. Not really seeing how that's bad, especially since Ultimate was kind of a shitshow, and Capcom is like the #1 company people love to talk about boycotting.

It did well, but not initially. Most games aren't evergreen titles like Nintendo games are, so decisions for the future are usually made after launch. Since it takes time to get the ball rolling, delayed success means delayed decision making (or overturning of said decisions). Also, it's easy to see why Capcom might be worried that UMvC3 v2 would be risky considering how UMvC3 struggled at first.

So I bought one of those Afterglow headsets that Chris G wears.

It's pretty cool, but the microphone on it is godawful. My £25 wired headset beats it... :o
