Stick uber alles for me. There's too much stuff like pianoing in SFIV and Akira's knee that's way harder on pad.

Pianoing isn't all that necessary though, is it? All a Blanka pad player would have to do for electricty, for example, would be 3x p, mp, hp. Well, I think, since I've never actually tried.

No, 3xP counts as a single P input.

This. I've seen pad players piano and I still don't understand what sorcery they use to do it.
It's the same as pianoing on stick but just harder because instead of using three fingers you use your thumb and index. If you have one of the MadCatz pads, you can emulate a true piano motion but the buttons are much smaller and harder to press than Sanwa.

Oh I understand but I just can't believe they get it out consistently. Knowing SF4 there's probably some weird button priority trick you can do to get it lol

I personally hope Capcom puts "it was a tag fighter" near the top of the list as to why sfxt failed (same with TTT2). I really hate those style of fighting games and hope we see 1v1 for the next entries.

Note that I feel Marvel is really quite different in that regard.
It wasn't even close to the main reason, but I also hate tag fighters and non-interactive team battles. Either give me interactivity or make it 1v1.

Anyone here play significantly better with a pad than an arcade stick?

I've been using an arcade stick for about 3-4 months and I still find basic movement is as hard as it was when I started.

Switching back to pad I notice that I perform MUCH better. I think playing on an arcade stick has improved my execution of inputs on a pad so I guess it's not a total loss.
Hm... when I first had my arcade stick way way back, the first thing I did was just movement. I didn't care about inputs for combos or moves too much. Just messed with jumps, IADs, back and forward dashes, etc. When I moved to specials, I would just input things super slow, then just sped it up bit by bit. I do play an instrument though, so maybe that's why the steps for me to get used to it weren't so bad.

I prefer it over pad like oneida said. There are just things that make it easier like pianoing, plinking, kara, negative edging. But use whichever controller feels more comfortable for you though. For games like BB, pad isn't too bad. Plenty of leftover buttons for macros if you do need them too.

I switched from pad to stick and I miss dedicated burst, rc, FD/Barrier buttons.

But I love to plink and double tap in Street Fighter.

Yep. I play better on a pad for the most part.

There are definitely pros/cons to the various controllers, though. It's not an accident that there are so many pad grappler players, for instance.

I actually played vanilla SFIV with a 360 pad for a very long time when it came out. My Gen was very good using the bumpers to switch styles. I totally dropped the character once I learned stick though.

I honestly do believe SF4 gives stick players a favorable advantage with the way advanced execution mechanics work.

I would love an arcade stick that had the analog portion of a pad welded to it instead of the joystick, as I find movement inefficient on stick.

Wait you play on the analog sticks?

I still play on a stick but I always felt movement was a little cumbersome. Things like doing advanced footsies is harder for me. I have a Sega Saturn PS2 pad I have a Tokki 360 converter for, but doing shoryuken motions are never consistent and I jump when I don't intend to.

This is my biggest problem with both stick and pad: getting directions I don't want, like accidentally hitting up-forward instead of just forward. That's why I think keyboard or hitbox might be appropriate for me, since you can hit the buttons for explicitly the direction you want.

Same here.

On the Tekken 5 arcade cabinets I used to plug in my PS2 controller, used movements with D pad and played with the 4 buttons on the arcade cabinets. It worked really well despite it being weird at first.

I have huge problems with jumping on the Saturn pad as well - precision doesn't seem to be it's strong suit. It's why I want to pick up a stick.

I'm on SSF4 on Steam right now if anyone wants to run some games. My Xbox Live GT is Emperor Bohe

I'm also down for some ST on GGPO if anyone's down. msg me up.

Gamertag: Emperor Bohe
SteamID: emperorbohe

Mihe had the cleanest execution of any Zero player in the early umvc3 days, and he was doing his lightning loops on the 360 analog stick. I don't know how the heck he did that.

analog sticks are more precise than pad, problem is it's technically slower due to having to move around more. Also playing GG or BB on analog would be REALLY FUCKING HARD mostly cause no 2 button dashing :P

Yeah you always here by a lot of people that it's a great fighter pad, and in essence it does get the job done a lot better than most pads, but it's more suited towards beat 'em ups and shmups more than anything else. I play Battle Circuit on MAME with it and it's great pulling off quarter circles and shoryukens when it's not in a fighting game context where you always have to be on point.

That's why I always tell people to input the motions super slow, even if the move won't come out, then speed it up. Accurate clean inputs will go a long way and won't screw things up for your muscle memory. Usually when I see people start out, they just do the motions way too fast and everything looks sporadic.

Yeah, I could probably get better at it with enough practice, but a controller where it's literally impossible to hit the wrong direction sounds appealing.

Try out a keyboard for sure since you already have it, fast and accurate movement in particular is really easy with it.

I have two friends that have made arcade sticks in a keyboard layout. The directional buttons were squares and everything while the other buttons were just typical sanwas.

Pretty neat that they're able to do that and play what's most comfortable for them.

Edit: Oh wait, how are the directional buttons laid out?

You can make anything work with dedication, but being objective, I find it hard to conclude that arcade sticks are nothing but a vestigial anachronism. I feel they are even holding the genre back. This is coming from someone who considers his execution on sticks better than most. I hate the damn thing. If you're smart you'll play pad or hitbox. Being comfortable on one medium could very well blind you to ways it could be holding you back.

I'm too damn stubborn to switch, but I'm really considering a hitbox this year.

Nice, I was looking around but didn't find anyone selling them.

Like on a keyboard.

It's just a madcatz stick, but the joystick has square buttons, so it's like a wasd layout. He had to get a place to cut out a metal plate of course to match the buttons.

Hitbox maybe, although I don't find the arcade stick lever as problematic as people do here, but no way @ pad. Pad makes sense for some games - Tekken, SC (?) - but dropping stick for pad to play VF is the opposite of smart.
