Fighting Games Weekly | June 15-21 | 16 is barely okay

So apparently Fafnir => OS 5K/Tyrant Rave is a thing? They block Fafnir, then if they do nothing, 5K string start, if they jump out AA 5K, if they mash they mash right into Tyrant Rave. Seems cancerous enough.

I blame Daigo's loss on SF5. Damn that SF5 for confusing Daigo. He was probably trying to V Trigger in the middle of some of those rounds.

So there's a lot of Japanese anime players coming to Evo.

I would put the over/under on North American players making top 8 at Evo in both Xrd and P4AU at 1, jeez. That and I'm pretty sure you're not seeing any American players even sniff winning any of the anime side games, either.

That's.... a lot of killers..

Ogawa, Nage, hasegawa, Taka, FAB, Koichi, Woshige (my idol), Bleed, Dogura, and...... Jonio!!??!?...

I think Zhi is actually one of the most knowledgeable commentators when he wants to be because he points out what works, ultra changes, and a lot of pre-match history on players, etc. but that guy needs to translate his interviews.

The one with Mago at the end?

He did start translating it but then someone interrupted and kicked him off commentary.

I can't believe Mago won SEAM. When he won that Hype Spotting qualifier you could chalk it up to being a weak qualifier. There's no downplaying this one. He's truly unwashed up. There's hope even for Kbrad.

Tokido is now the second to qualify for CC through a premier event without winning. There's 11 premier events remaining and most of the top 8 is now qualifiers. Just shows what I thought all along, 32 spots with 16 premiere events was too much. The prestige is lost.

I would say next year, do 7 premier events
then have 16 folks play-in a single 3/5 set for 8 spots, and then the losers do single-elim for the 16th spot.

So cut # of total quals to 23

I'd run 2 premier events in Asia (SEAM and a Japanese event) , 2 Europe (1 UK, 1 continental) , 3 US (Evo/FR/Combo Breaker)*

* reason I chose CB and FR over CEO is not a knock on CEO, but geographical representation and that CEO is close to Evo timewise, and FR is March. CEO is one of the best American events.

Yea he did start talking about it in the end a bit, but this is not the first time he carried an interview like this. Most interviewers tell the audience what is being said in between questions, because it doesn't leave too much time for the audience to wonder what's going on and if you wait too long to translate, a lot of details can leave the interviewer's mind when the moment has passed when they summarize it at the end. I understand he tries to have a conversation with the person and that has been his style every time (and he even forgets to translate it at times), but it's not very spectator friendly and is quite inefficient at passing on information to people.

seam 2015 is probably the best tournament of 2015 so far stream production wise

stream started on time
minimal and brief breaks
good camera control (maybe i'm the only one here but i enjoy watching crowd/player reactions during mid-match and post-match)
great commentary with zhi not being too offensive
most of all, extremely high quality matches from pools all the way to grand finals.

Except for the last one, we should expect this from all tournaments but sadly that's not the case. The first two are an issue when it comes to tournaments...

I agree, when him and Xian used to do Cross Counter Asia, I found it much higher in quality compared to Gootrecks and Miek Rose. The two of them were on point with their analysis' on the matches and usually got wins lol

the problem with this year's cpt structure is that with so many top players flying around the world collecting points and cash and most of them performing consistently, there are not enough events to accommodate 32 spots. if you place well enough in two tournaments, you will most likely qualify for capcom cup.

For sure. It's clear now they should have stayed with 16 spots for Capcom Cup. Like getting a berth for winning a premier doesn't really mean anything because the points alone would get you in easily.

premier spots exist for those who don't travel often but may have the talent to break through the usual players. Xiao Hai would have been that player had he beaten Tokido.

If Xiao Hai won today, he gets 256 points. There's no way 32nd place when the season is over will have more than 256 points. The automatic berth is immaterial.

ggs, irfaanator

I'm not really sure what kind of tips I could give you, just gotta play a bit more fundamentally solid with the AA's and normals especially since Rose has great buttons.

Also, be more tricky with her U2. Whenever you popped it, all I would really have to worry about was a grab which isn't the scariest thing that could come from her U2.

Try learn the 4 button tech as well. I still don't have it down perfectly, but it can help against option selects on your wakeup and it techs the grab if I do go for a throw.

Use Rose's cr.LK, st.MK frame trap more too.

yea. my defense and spacing is ass. I press too many buttons at the wrong time and still bad with her anti airs.

I have an issue teching and I think there's a solution that was mentioned here a while back. How do I do grab while also pressing another normal so it works as an OS?

Thats why you got thrown by my srubby akuma 10 times

Kappa

I also just realised you have to press late when crouch teching

press it at the same time like lp+lk+hp

that sounds deadly with rolento. im assuming i also have to be careful and not abuse this since the player can adapt to this.

lol, you actually got me. I was expecting you to do low short into a combo all those times.

I don't think that your defence is bad against standard characters. But when it came to the Divekicks and Elena.. that's just what Rose can't really deal with all too well lol.

Elena is beautiful tho

Yea you can be frame-trapped easily using slow buttons to crouch tech with. You can also crouch tech with jabs.

Don't think there's anything wrong. Tokido, regardless of not winning anything has been one of the best players as has Infiltration.

This year Tokido's placings:
2nd: Red Bull Kumite, Hypespotting, SEAM
3rd: KVO
4th: SXSW, Stunfest, FFMRumble
5th: Double Elimination

He's been top 5 in consistency in tournaments with lots and lots of talent. So really, the players that have all qualified are as great of a list as you can possibly have. I think we're all in agreement for that.

I disagree that doing well in 1 or 2 events shouldn't be enough to get you in. It should. With these players all traveling to these events, it's extremely difficult to get in.

Really, the US sf scene are the only ones to blame if there are players in the top 32 that are weighing down the overall prestige of Capcom Cup. Had Smug, Dieminion, and Snake traveled to NWM, Combo Breaker, and Texas Showdown, points would have been more difficult to get. I consider those guys as 3 of best 5 US players right now and Snake only went to 1 US ranking event.

Points being distributed is extremely top heavy. You would have to place 2nd twice to get 128 points and 3rd, 4 times in order to get 128 points at these ranking events. This basically means that you really have to earn your way into Capcom Cup. Out of all the Capcom Pro Tour tournaments held thus far, only 4 (NWM, CB, TX, Abuget) have been rather easy.

Fuck prestige- this is more opportunities for more people to have a shot, not all of whom have the sponsorship/repeated opportunities to get there. If a guy like Arturo gets to Capcom Cup, we're better for it.

You also can't auto-qualify from anything under 4th place, so there's no risk of someone random scooping up a spot w/ a single top 8 finish.
