Fighting Games Weekly | June 18-24

The way Mago and Mike Ross look at each other and laugh every round, it could be a Excellent Adventure episode.
pretty good idea. invite him over and record a couple of episodes of excellent adventures. the poonko episodes were some of my favs.

It's a bit of a stretch to say 3D fighters are struggling. VF is still quite popular in Japan and is gradually gaining in popularity in the US and elsewhere (though whether or not it will be sustained is anyone's guess). Tekken is in a bit of a lull outside of Asia from what I can tell, but Tekken 6 is pretty long in the tooth and the scene will probably be revitalized when TTT2 comes out. The only 3D game that I would say is struggling is SCV, and a lot of that is the SC community's fault.

Tekken is also a much simpler game strategically than VF, and it's easier to figure out what you should be doing in Tekken if you're not well-versed in the game.

SCV- I blame Namco putting out a product that kinda dumped on what the mainstream fans wanted for that game struggling. SCV isn't a bad game, but it's not what folks want out of a SC game. In a way, SCV has some similarities to SF3 back in the day in this regard.

I really don't understand why Namco went on to piss their casual fanbase, especially after looking at MK9's success. The game was there, all they need to do was add meaty content, like the past games. A lot of my friends who play FG casually didn't buy the game after reading how many things were cut out.

Namco and Capcom should learn that rushing games out are not gonna help them in the long run.

SCV was rushed. I think they didn't want to compete with SFxTK. Give Daishi 3-4 more months of devtime, we would have gotten a much meatier game. (though gameplay would have been the same, and that was part of the problem, and the other reason I made the SF3 reference). They couldn't delay to September, because T6 suffered from being too delayed (shit netcode that makes KOFXII look like GGPO at launch also hurt), so they had to get that out this year.

SFxTK is really the cancer of the FG market- it's killed so many things.

SCV is too radically different from the other SC games that it alienated some folks, just how parried alienated many OG SF2/SFA players (the guy who taught me SF quit over SF3 and never came back, as did many of the others I used to play with- SC5 wasn't as radical, but was still too radical a change) Daishi's design would have been better served as a new IP, like maybe calling it Weaponlord 2, instead of being a Soul Calibur game.

there is a neogaf member called shidoshi and i thought people were talking about that person when saying they became a twitch cop.

TEKKEN and VF are about the same now, I think. VF got way easier over the last decade. :/

I knew I shouldnt have started linking his stream on gaf. Fuckin esports money clouding his mind...

Real rap though jiyuna is the only person I can stand streaming and find entertaining besides triforce. Hm going to suggest to him on IRC that he try to get EMP sponsorship.

He's joking. He's poking fun of the people in the FGC who live off donations and raffle money.

yea this is becoming a habit as of late i've noticed - sounds "esportsy" to me >.>

No i kid, but it is interesting!

Even though I really dislike VF, I don't think it (or any 3D fighters) need "hype" commentary so to speak. I find there's more value in being informative with the so much more stuff going on.

Actually Marvel is the only game I think that's augmented by hype commentary. Perhaps Skullgirls and KoF too.

Donations and raffle money aren't even the worst of it.

If you want to play top players at majors now, you gotta pay for the experience. Not a money match. Even if you win, they keep the 25-30 bucks they charged for them to waste your time with their C-teams.

FChamp is taking it one step further and charging 50 dollars for you to rub elbows with the "best" at the FGTV salty suites.

FGC hates eSports so much that they are starting to become them, haha.

I did that just now. There's a clip of a Pokemon tournament that I forgot I participated in (and won), a handful of matches of AE with most of them being old and of me getting bodied, and Dissidia matches.

this has inspired me to start using the youtube features in 3rd strike to clear my name since i'm much better now. BECAUSE IF EVERYONE ONLY UPLOADS VIDEOS OF THEIR WINS, WHY SHOULDN'T I AS WELL?

Mike Ross winning a tourney? what is this, 2009?

FGC hates esports because esports is gonna be the one charging all that and keeping the bigger slice of the pie, all while telling people what to say on stream!

I don't even mind this, but if you're going to hustle non stop and show off your money match winning stacks, just stop the donation raffle garbage.

well, what else are they gonna do with all those sticks? Between the FGTV house, those guys probably bring home at least two new sticks from every tourney. Someone wins one for a small donation, FGTV gets to knock a few bucks off rent and gets to continue providing entertainment, everyone's happy.

Just got back from picking up UMvC3 & the Bible guide for 35 - were there any changes to any characters since launch till now, that won't be in the book? You don't have to describe them, I just want to know so I can look them up.

Aside from tournaments, I've totally blanked out UMvC3 unlike AE and vanilla MvC3.

It is pretty damn pathetic but it is a much different scene now than what it was 5 years ago.

I can't blame them as there are plenty of people who want to play/pay.

Yeah, at least I can't hate on the top players on convincing scrubs to give them money to play video games for a few minutes. :P

A fool and his money...

I would take 2 Skisonics over ETR.....

Is this unblockable?

If so this is going to be a mess.
no you just have to guess which way to block as you are coming in. the dante player still has to waste a meter to snap a character out so i can't see that many people abusing this as its not guaranteed you will hit them.

If I want to play a top player. I'm not going to pay anything to do it other than a venue fee and entry fee. Then I'm going to see what happens if I run into one. Most likely, I go down hard, but sometimes I don't.

That's just the way I feel as someone who isn't going to get beyond pot monster status. I know I can't win the whole tourney, but I feel I can always win 1 match or 1 set.

Chris is a lot different than the Bible's version, he got some buffs on a patch weeks after the game's launch (I don't remember now what the buffs are, but I'm sure he got buffs)

Hulk's command throw (I believe the M version) throws away opponents much further than before making it difficult to OTG follow up. He also lost his Gamma Wave infinite.

Chris can now special cancel his Flamethrower move

Phoenix Wright's assists no longer turn invincible when he goes into Turnabout mode

Characters can block after finishing an air dash (before they couldn't even block during their air dash recovery)

Can't throw tech during moves.

These were the main changes, other changes were mostly bug/glitch fixes.

Anybody have an idea of when Marvel is going to be played at Evo? I see looking at the 2011 schedule that AE was pretty much the entire day Friday and UMvC3 was the entire day Saturday. Anyone know if it will be similar this year? I want to run a marathon of EVO UMvC3 but I am working on Friday with Friday-night commitments!

Namco can be blamed for some of SCV's problems, maybe, but the community hasn't been so great at trying to attract new players, and there's still a lot of internal bickering over balance and whatnot. There was even an effort underway to get the community to agree on a bunch of changes for another patch. You can imagine how that turned out.

I think many of those problems are inevitable on a console-first fighter. There's no set ruleset like there is in an arcade fighter.

GAF FGC is awesome - thanks a million!

Gonna put in some work to get back into the game some time next week.
