Fighting Games Weekly | June 29 - Jul 5 | Frauds Among U.S.

I wasn't saying it from a monetary standpoint but from a "look EVO broke its record again, it keeps growing!" standpoint.

It's easier to show growth when you are breaking records and makes for easy headlines.

In marketing terms i'll agree. But I think u can achieve headlines just by entrance and prize pools. I'm going to put Fifa example. No one watches the FIWC finals, but it always headlines as the "larger tournament host" cuz the people that play the online game mode.

I'm pretty sure an important part of EVO revenue comes from Twitch partnership. If that's the case and the payout system it's somehow similar to my example, I think they're doing the best aproach.
I don't think timeslots decision has nothing to do with what Mr.Wizard prefers or tradition, as some people have suggested

I would be surprised if Justin makes even top 16 in SF4. He has actually been playing a lot more Marvel lately and is serious about defending his crown there. FChamp was talking about long sessions he was having with Justin where Justin was basically practicing his Nova team for the Morrigan counterpick.

Another reason why ChrisG is going to have a hard time at EVO, people have started having some backup strat against Morrigan, even KBR has it.

What does KBR use?

What does KBR use?
PRRog team. His Wolverine is decent but the other 2 characters on his team are pretty bad so it's unlikely that he will actually win over ChrisG using that team.

Though the PRRog team was used against Morrigan Jam Session not Morrigan Missiles. KBR kept his team against Morrigan Missiles but he thinks that his team cannot handle Jam Session without a beam.

He pulled out PR Balrog's team during CEO. Wolverine/Doom/Vergil
Ah, unfortunate.

do you believe him though?
Justin Wong ‏@JWonggg 6h
P.S. I really am going to try super hard in ultra! Going to play 24/7 in Japan and come back to Norcal and go in with @PR_Balrog

Current PR Rog would wreck 09 - 10 Daigo. A lot of top players would. Daigo winning now would be more meaningful than back then. Competition is at an all time high.

*No matter how you want to analyze the numbers and make excuses for it, Marvel 3 still had the highest stream numbers 4 years running while being in that 2nd last spot. Maybe EVO would maximize CPM if they put SF4 2nd last and put Smash last (who knows) but until the pattern changes, why change?

*EVO is not the same as standard majors and it's especially not the same as major for the casual audience who tune in to EVO but don't tune into majors. That's why EVO breaks records and most majors don't, it's become some casuals only tune in for EVO and not for majors. For these casuals, maybe they care about Marvel more than SF... who knows. Marvel 3 had a weaker year in terms of stream numbers and entrants but has had an amazing EVO run so far so most of the casuals probably only remember Justin's great runs at EVO and want to see if he can continue that this year.

You and Wiz are getting a lot of mileage out of Marvel having a 5 percent difference in viewers from SF4. King of Fighters 13 was the second highest viewed game at Evo 2012 with the difference from 1st being less than 10k. That probably secured its spot for the following year but it was still pushed to a different (worse) timeslot due to entrant numbers. Thus started its decline and eventual pushing out of Evo.

Also, I wouldn't call what people have said here as "excuses". What we extrapolate from the standard of "final day viewer counts" is worth as much as you saying casuals value justin wong doing a barrel roll.

Going back to KOF13, it had a higher viewer count than Melee and SF4 during its first year as the 3rd shown game. When given the morning timeslot, it was lower than both Melee and 4. Timeslot matters.

Can't wait for UMvC3 - > SF4 -> SF5 Sunday finals next year.

That's not going to happen. When HDR, MvC2 and SF4 were being run at Evo, MvC2 was the penultimate game despite HDR outdrawing it.

"Tradition"

He still does better than Justin though.

Yeah true, I'm not saying Justin is probably going to get top 8, just that I see it happening. It's Justin, he can suddenly have some godlike games and beat 1 or 2 decent players and end up there. Probably not happening, but hey.

Also is PR Rog still retiring or is that definitely not happening anymore now that he's doing so well and SFV is around the corner?

I like Mahvel. But I often wonder if I like Mahvel for the Marvel aspects, the Capcom, aspects, the VS.-style aspects, or specifically MvC 3 for it's X-Factor, combos, mechanics, etc. Like, what makes me enjoy it so much? What makes it so very hype? Tempo swings, extended combos, one-touch kills maybe? The legacy? The pedigree? The history? Hype commentators, the enthusiasm from both the casual crowd and the professionals? I want to know the secret formula.

Maybe it's the same thing that makes Melee hype, which is why they go hand-in-hand during the EVO line-up. The cross-over of the two always get me shocked, and honestly it's a smart decision to group those together (more so than any other combination if you ask me).

So then... I have to ask myself, what can replace Mahvel? It feels like a game completely winding down this year. It's not dying, but the luster is fading. Contrast this with Street Fighter IV + V on the horizon or Melee and Smash 4 breaking records. Marvel ( in this case MvC 3) is a game that is bounded by its licensing. It cannot grow further than it has. It can only grow on the backs of its players---but are those players completely loyal to this game, or the series it represents?

The line of thinking is why I questioned what it is I enjoyed about Marvel. Because when it comes to be the day of retiring this game [on the mainstage] for a replacement, will players and watchers alike be accepting? Will they find it okay to drop the time invested for a fresher-style game? Already looking at Street Fighter V from E3 as an example, I'm chomping at the bits to see that game come to life and birth a completely new scene, with up-and-comers around every corner. Can the same be said for Marvel? It's called Marvel, after all. A nickname so aggressively to its image, yet clearly the parent company has passed on supporting this part of the brand for an untold number of reasons.

In other words, would the next _________ vs. Capcom even be a contender in this space we currently call Marvel, or would it be the natural progression? Let's say for argument's sake the next game is the exact same 3-on-3, Assist-based, DHC-filled recipe... but zero Marvel characters to be found. Will it still enthrall people the same way?

I never said time slot doesn't matter. I said that you don't know what would happen if you change around time slots. Yea sure Marvel would have way less viewers if it was on Saturday but as long as its getting those high numbers at that slot why change?

Also you need to ease off with the Marvel hate, it's been getting harder and harder to take your posts seriously as of late. You are slowly becoming the thing you despise the most.

sure, if the brand name is something equal to marvel's status. otherwise nah, branding is a blatant part of any appeal to folks and a natural part of why the products exist in the first place
it'd replace marvel as a game but the draw would be different to a degree

For me, all of this + the culture that surrounds the game, though I guess you sort of covered that. Also the openness and brokenness of the game and all the cheap stuff, which again you sort of covered.

Definitely not all people. It's not Marvel without Marvel.

Depends on the brand. If it's DC? Yea sure it can match MvC games although probably won't surpass it because MVC is a long running series if you include all the VS games.

If it's Tatsunoko ain't no one going to give a damn about it except Shaowebb (no diss, just real talk).

Though I do feel that Capcom itself has enough IPs and characters to make a Capcom VS fighter with a large bunch of their characters. TvC failed not just because it was paired about with Tatsunoko but also because it was lacking big characters like Dante and Vergil (yeah and Vergil, dude is all over Japan right now with the DMC4SE promotion).

My thoughts exactly. Tatusnoko isn't a brand like Marvel in the Western world. But on top of that it still didn't get that 3-on-3 aspect which I bet most would associate with the VS. series nowadays (but wasn't always the case).

Thinking about it: Would guys like Yipes, Justin Wong, Chris G, FChamp... would they go for something like a Capcom vs. Capcom or DC vs. Capcom?

I already know the answer. It varies. Maybe they would, begrudgingly. Guys like Sanford famously hate MvC3, despite having a lot of the same characters and moves. So I'd love to know how much of it comes down to the gameplay versus the act of "wanting to play the game" versus simple brand loyalty/power.

Does the spirit of "Mahvel" exist on if there is no "Marvel"?

It will be interesting to see how Marvel does at Evo this year.
Prior to last Evo, it was still consistently the 2nd or 3rd biggest game, consistently getting the 2nd most views. And it was still the 2nd biggest game at Evo. This was the case every year prior as well.
This year, it fell harder than ever, now being one of the lesser main games in terms of entrants, and falling in terms of viewership as well. That translated it to being only 6th in terms of entrants.
It'll be interesting to see if/how viewership falls in relation to this.

I would actually say it fell harder entrants wise from 2013 to 2014 vs from 2014 to 2015.

MVC3 2013 - 1297

MVC3 2014 - 1014 (lost 283 entrants)

MVC3 2015 - 816 (lost 198 entrants)

The main issue is that every other game or community that's on the EVO line up grew from last year. And that's the bottom line... if you aren't growing than you are dying.

Going by the general EVO formula of having a game in the line up if it gets 400+ entrants and we assume this rate of decay for the game, it's going to be at EVO for at least 2 more years, maybe 3 more years if the decay slows down like it did from last year.
The rate slowed down by 2%! At that rate, Marvel will survive until 2064!

Dying my ass!
You can't argue with that logic
