Fighting Games Weekly | June 29 - Jul 5 | Frauds Among U.S.

800+ is still an absolutely good great tourney entrant number for a game that hasn't had any patches or updates in a long time. I would be playing MvC3 if it had a patch to fix character balancing and better netcode. But knowing Capcom, they would probably have made things even worse with a patch.

It will be interesting to see how Marvel does at Evo this year.
Prior to last Evo, it was still consistently the 2nd or 3rd biggest game, consistently getting the 2nd most views. And it was still the 2nd biggest game at Evo. This was the case every year prior as well.
This year, it fell harder than ever, now being one of the lesser main games in terms of entrants, and falling in terms of viewership as well. That translated it to being only 6th in terms of entrants.
It'll be interesting to see if/how viewership falls in relation to this.

Quality > Quantity

Who cares about entrants lmao

These crappy anime games get lots of entrances but no one actively wants to watch that garbage, and rightfully so. It's a mistake, nothing but trash. Same with smash

Marvel is still top 3 in viewers drawn

I have golden TE too.

Many Japanese smashers are choosing to go to APEX instead of Evo I do believe. At least I've been reading that for a bit now

Melee/Smash 4 have more players period

also for Smash 4 Japan doesn't like customs

Smash isn't big in Japan competitively. It's hard for console games to get going competitively because Japan as a whole is behind a lot of countries when it comes to competitive gaming. Competitive gaming lives in the Arcades for Japan.

That's why I want SFV to be in the arcades. It doesn't have to be when it debuts, but maybe a year down the line or something. Luckily SF already has a competitive following with a lot of popular tournament players in Japan so the lack of arcade release won't hurt it as much. Still, it will lose those arcade players that play multiple fighters and stick to the arcades.

2010 had Gamerbee and Infiltration, but most majors get bigger competition these days.

2010 also had RB, Tokido, Eita, and Ryan Hart.

EVO this year is too hard to predict.

Smash is not garbage.

I wonder people who call Smash garbage have even bothered seriously playing any game in the series.

Melee may not have much of a presence in Japan, but you're underestimating the size of the Smash 4 community there

on a side note I wonder why Brawl/Smash 4 never took off in Europe compared to the US or Japan

Yeah, it's crazy how most games (besides the bottom 3) have grown in the last year.

2013 entrants
1. SSF4 AE v2012 - 1,601 players
2. UMvC3 - 1,297 players
3. Smash - 696 players
4. Injustice - 582 players
5. SFxT - 545 players
6. KoF13 - 433 players
7. P4A - 400 players
8. TTT2 - 355 players
9. MK9 - 233 players

2014 entrants
Ultra Street Fighter 4 - 1,979
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 - 1,014
Super Smash Bros. Melee - 970
BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma - 508
Killer Instinct - 338
King of Fighters 13 - 319
Injustice: Gods Among Us - 311
Tekken Tag Tournament 2 - 257

Street Fighter, Melee, and BlazBlue (in terms of anime) all saw growth, but they were relatively modest.

While this year..
Ultra Street Fighter IV – 2227
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U – 1926
Super Smash Bros. Melee – 1869
Mortal Kombat X – 1162
Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- – 968
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 – 816
Tekken 7 – 458
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax – 437
Killer Instinct – 397

Melee, Mortal Kombat (in terms of NRS), and Guilty Gear (in terms of anime) saw nearly 100% increases over their previous best years. And Super Smash Bros for Wii U is like the 3rd or 4th highest number of entrants ever.
Don't think a Tekken comparison can really be done, since this is a special case, and I'm not sure of Tekken 6 numbers.
Pretty sure every other game/community saw its best years in these last 3.

I don't think I am. What tournaments are even in Japan? I know there was Choukaigi/Tokaigi and KVO. Choukaigi and Tokaigi were official Nintendo tournaments or nico nico tournaments. How many viewers did KVO get for Smash? Console tournaments as a whole are rare in Japan because venues are expensive and there isn't a lot of TOs out in Japan. The ones that exist are the fg players that went out to US tournaments. KSK is one of those. Dogura with the mixupnightmonday crew is one of those. Then there are a lot of TOs that organize with the arcades like akajojo, gama (rip), kagecchi, etc... which doesn't take as much work as getting a lot of consoles, monitors, and renting out venues. US as a whole just has so many people willing to organize tournaments compared to Japan. It's also harder as there is no prize pots to be won in Japan unless the developer or some company puts in a lot of money.

I know Smash is huge in Japan, but I'm talking about competitively.

Top 8 will be streamed at the Madcatz booth.

Oh? Thanks.

I'm guessing Tokido and Xiaohai will be in, should be a solid tournament if Misterio shows up as well. They have a nice three way rivalry going on.

There was also word of Bala trying to make it this year, might be a chance since Answer is showing up and they are buddies.

If that was in fact Madkof chatting during the Stunfest chat then he probably won't make it, said due to financial reasons. Unless his plans have changed since.

Kyabetsu isn't able to go to EVO this year despite registering for it. So that's one less player for USF4 and KOF. I know Haitani is competing in the Vampire side tournament, but not Sako.

I never said time slot doesn't matter. I said that you don't know what would happen if you change around time slots. Yea sure Marvel would have way less viewers if it was on Saturday but as long as its getting those high numbers at that slot why change?

Also you need to ease off with the Marvel hate, it's been getting harder and harder to take your posts seriously as of late. You are slowly becoming the thing you despise the most.

*sigh*

I think by comparing me to him you don't understand what my actual qualm with this is.

We've had this conversation before. By catering to the old games you prevent new games from growing. I would feel exactly the same way if Street Fighter 4 were in Marvel 3's position. You prevent them from people capturing their potential hype moments and you prevent them from creating their own storylines. Ultrachen this week was just depressed over the fact that not every game can be big like street fighter. They were hoping MKX and GGxrd would have decent shots. Their shots are now. MKX especially, since there's great potential to bring new people to this community with that game.

You have it backwards. It isn't go with true and trusted Marvel 3 and ignore the other games because they're hot phases. Those games have the potential to create their own legacies, but it can only be done right now. Marvel 3 isn't dead and isn't going anywhere. But it is never going to grow. You're showing it now by outlining how many years it has left. Also, it's hilarious that people are tweeting #marvelisn'tdead when I think out of all the games of the lineup, barring SF4, it's the game that needs exposure the least to keep itself afloat.

Essentially, it is much like what the Melee community will eventually do to Smash 4, despite Smash 4 being a good game in its own right. Killing the newer game, because you prefer the old game. At least Melee is growing.

I remember back in 2010 people thought SSF4 had 4,000+ player. Some rumor started going around that over 4,000 people attended EVO that year and that every single person entered SSF4. In the end we never got a official number but I remember hearing several times on stream that it was "about 1700" and "Over 1600" back then. Whatever it actually was, it was probably the most until USF4 beat it last year with 1979.
