Week of May 26th to June 1st, 2014.

Fighting Games Weekly is the weekly discussion thread for all things fighting games. News, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related.

Don't know what to watch right now? Check the FGCPros Twitch Group or Jaxel's Stream Viewer. If you want to watch multiple streams at once, you can use Jaxel's customizable multiviewer as well.

New to FGC-GAF is the FGC-GAF Index which lists the fighting games GAFers plays as a neat reference with some rough statistics to boot. To add yourself to the index, quote this post and use the survey link below. Please remember to save/bookmark the "Edit your response" link so you can edit your responses if/when you buy a game already on the list or a new game that releases in the future.

Last week's thread. An archive of previous FGW threads is available here.

Every week, FGW will spotlight one GAFer to get a better picture of their history with fighting games, their preferences, and much more. For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look at our most lactose-tolerant member, Master Milk!

What fighting games do you currently play, what are your all time favourites and why?
I currently play Blazblue because of Platinum the Trinity, but I'll be picking up various other games because of UFGT and Evo.

My all-time favorites are probably Guilty Gear Accent Core, Dead or Alive 2, and Smash 64. These are all games that I enjoyed playing a lot when they first came out and spent a lot of time playing. I like speed, style, and fun in my games and they manage to bring that.
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? What are your least favorite and why?
I don't think I have any favorites, but I really hate Overdrive and Astrals from Blazblue. Overdrive is damn near useless for Platinum, and being able to combo into Astrals is annoying. I don't hate the concepts, just the execution.
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?
I've loved fighting games since I first played SF2 on the SNES. I've always liked martial arts and such, so fighting games were probably just a natural fit for me. If it weren't SF2, it would have likely been something else.

I used to play most genres, but now that I have to spend my own money on things, I usually stick to what I know I'll enjoy on some level, so mostly fighters. But, if it looks fun I'll pick it up, so genre doesn't really matter that much. Also, I enjoy SRPG's a lot, as long as they're FFT or made by NIS, with Phantom Kingdom probably being my favorite game of all-time.
What is your favorite fighting game character and why?
Ayane from Dead or Alive. Arrogant and haughty, skilled, deadly, stylish, purple hair, big boobs, tragic backstory. If I had a waifu, it'd be Ayane.
Other characters I really like but that obviously aren't on Ayane's level include Platinum the Trinity, I-No, Dizzy, A.B.A, Lei-Fang, Christie, Sakura, Ibuki, Vice, Iori, Kyosuke, Edge, Kyoko, and Double. I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting.

Aesthetic and personality are the most important thing.
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
I mash because hitting buttons is fun. I like to go in because hitting buttons is fun. I like to run away because annoying your opponent is fun. But above all I like to win, so I try to use whatever style I think will get the victory. Some matches you have to rush down quickly, others you have to fall back and stay patient. Whatever works.

I play online mostly, unfortunately, but online sucks, so I'll probably transition over to being a tournament player in the relatively near future.
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player?
Biggest weakness is that I don't live in Japan. Second would easily be that I hate Training Mode. I'd rather be playing people.

Biggest strength is probably that I have a decent grasp on all of my weaknesses and could get over them, if I decided to put in the effort.
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career?
I don't have a fighting game career yet, but if I ever win Evo I'll make a post about it.
What do you want from future fighting games?
It'd be nice if Japanese devs could stop treating the rest of the world like second and third class citizens.

I'd also like more balance. Your favorite character getting bodied by half the cast isn't fun.

If I could get a random color select and rematching being standard features that'd be cool, too.

And timely PC releases.
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?
darkblade77, if not, hitokage, if not, fugu

For those who will be late joining us or haven't heard, the thread title is a tribute to the TO of Ultimate Fighting Game Tournament, who after ten years of hosting the celebrated Chicago event is quitting to focus on other projects. This past weekend's great UFGTX was the last ever.

I hope everyone enjoyed the ufgt10 stream this weeked a ton of work went into it.

From what I saw the quality and production values were excellent. I think a lot of people take for granted the amount of work that goes in to running a stream for 14+ hours so great job.

UFGT was my first tournament ever and I loved it. I wanted to thank Keits personally but he was both a little busy and pretty popular for some reason! In any case I'm super grateful for all the effort and love he put into throwing such a great event.

And the confidence he has in the Combo Breaker team means I can't wait for next year! I'll definitely be there.

Anime was saved this weekend.
Seriously, all 3 tournaments were super hype.

When Bananamerica Bursted only to get hit by the presents, I lost it.

I had no idea until people pointed it out to me but he helped develop a pretty popular indie fighting game called Divekick.

Also, Enzo, my son, you have made me proud to look at you for another week. Keep up the good work on thread titles.

Who are the best euro players?

Really glad everyone had fun. I have waffles and oncoming sleep. Great weekend.

Thank you attendees, viewers, and anyone not fitting either of those categories.

Good stuff Rick, thanks for all your hard work. Looking forward to Combo Breaker next year.

Please continue Salty's Silent Auction.

I'm glad everybody enjoyed UFGTX. It was a lot of hard work. Thanks to everybody who attended and to those who tuned in to watch. It is my intention now to drink heavily.

I may or may not subsequently complain about Deejay nerfs in an online forum.

fav part of ufgt this year was the mugen tourney.

I'm watching this again and I seriously can't believe this motherfucker busted out legit Jam wall stick combos on JWong. As soon as he saw Jam come up, dude just lit up like a Christmas tree. :lol :lol :lol

Edit: Holy shit the Canon™ Rival Schools/Project Justice matchup right afterwards. :lol

Great title. That cross over ex tiger knee from Ryan against krone was super dirty. I'm gonna have to watch the match again and learn that set up.

Got a link directly to this? Didn't catch that part, that sounds amazing.

Ryan won? Awesome! That guy works hard. It is crazy to think that he can do so well without the backing of a massive arcade or tournament heavy region.

I don't buy that, Ryan has proven himself but besides Louffy I don't think any of those other guys would win if they came to America.
Alioune got bad showings at Capcom Cup, but let's not forget how he ran a train on everybody at Fight Night. Luffy is the more exposed guy, but the true hidden boss is still Alioune. ^^

I don't buy that, Ryan has proven himself but besides Louffy I don't think any of those other guys would win if they came to America. Even though I exempted Louffy I don't think he would win either. I think he would eventually run into a character match up that he can't overcome. He beat Justin last time but I don't think he can do it again. And if he ran into someone like Krone, Ricky, or Kbrad I think he's in for a long day.

Luffy sent Ricky to losers at Evo. He knows the Rufus matchup and could definitely win it again. He did lose to Krone though.

You mean Nighmare Snake

If I ever had that happen to me and I "beat" a top player that way- I'd so be running the Bolieve gimmick, unless it was Sanford for FChamp- those two would probably think I was doing it for real and punch me out.

As for Luffy taking Ricky to losers- I don't think Rose/Rufus is that bad, probably 4-6, so it's doable.
