My personal computer looks like it may be temporarily transformed over the summer into a family computer. I have a lot of personal shit on here, everything from tax info to porno... do any of you know any good programs to use for at least locking up folders and/or files so that you can only access them with a password?

it doesn't have to be able to keep out the Pentagon or anything... just something so that you can't just peruse my computer and open everything up.

Download AxCrypt: http://axcrypt.sourceforge.net/

From the website:

AxCrypt File Encryption Software - Free Personal Privacy and Security for Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2K/XP with AES-128 File Encryption, Compression and transparent Decrypt and Open in the original application.

It adds a an AxCrypt option to your context menu. Just right click on the folder you want to protect and encrypt it. Real simple.

I actually found that last night, but it was set up so that you could only encrypt a small bit of information... perfect for text documents, but not too good for movies, music, etc that I want to keep as personal.

Better to move your porn to external DVDs and keep them in a box underneath your bed.

Actually Windows XP has built in Encryption, so you might want to consider using that.

Right click on the folder, choose properties, Click on the Advanced button (in the General Tab) and choose Encrypt Contents to Secure Data.

It's not just hiding the porn and everything, but that's definitely a part of it. Last thing I need is my mom tryign to use the internet, me hearing two clicks and then "OH MY GO-AWWDDDD... WHAT IS THIS?!" Cuz you know, when you hear that... it's over. Brutal honesty is the only way out: "Well, mom, it's my charity organization. I put this pornography onto DVDs and send it to soldiers in Iraq. It's called Smut for Soldiers, and I can write it off my taxes every year."

At my last job we used Dekart Private Disk. (There are tons of similar programs -- I think McAfee and Norton even have one.)

Basically it's a file that you double-click and enter a password. It then mounts as another drive. When you're done, right-click the drive and it encrypts back to the single file.

This would be good if you need to be paranoid. No matter how much you encrypt something, I'm pretty sure you can just boot up Knoppix or tomsrtbt and have a look around. Could be wrong about that though.

I'm not trying to keep the NSA out of my computer here. I just want something I can throw on a folder so if you want to open it you need a password.
