I certainly am not a fan of Lightning's in the slightest, but the reasons I've come across are: a) she apparently looks cool in cutscenes because attitude is a thing, and b) the obvious: people like the design/they think she's quite attractive. She's marketable from an appearance/animation standpoint.
 
I have a shallow level of fondness for the XIII characters.... but they're really not "characters"... they're a bundle of so-cool posturing and voicework.

I mean... by comparison, the characters in FFVI are definitely "characters". They had character development in their own simple way, and I'd love to see how they're coming along in the time since that game. (and that's an 18-year old SNES game for cryin out loud.. I choose this example because of how primitive it should be, by comparison... and yet it holds more genuine story)

But XIII characters? It would just be more adventures of Lightning's cool design, voice acting, and attitude. She's just an avatar, or "action figure", to be dropped into more unrelated adventures. I don't think of her as a person with real motivations.

And this does not apply to most entries in FF, who I would love to see again. XIII had Resident Evil-like characters. Just clothing and voicework and postures... not "character", not "people". I don't really "know them"... I've just seen them do cool shit in cutscenes.
 
I actually enjoyed FFXIII-2, but hated FFXIII, so their work with that game is done, move on.

Sometimes I feel like SE is run by people who look at what the fans want and then do the opposite, always.

"Oh, sir they want a remake of FFVII"

"Give them hope, but no remake"

"Sir, FFXIII went down like a lead balloon, people didn't like it"

"Nonsense! Give them more! MORE I SAY!"
 
It's not as much as their previous successes, but 9.6 million is still a lot as far as everyday sales go. I mean, the XIII trilogy may end up selling more copies of games than the Uncharted franchise did across 4 games.
 
More than likely a XIII-3 which could be ok if done right and not like XIII-2...

But what if this "new direction" meant it was actually a movie? Or something else? :O

And why is the favicon a "1"? Just because it's being revealed on September 1st?

Yeah I'm a Square fanboy of 20 years. I just want them to do good things, as they have, and probably (hopefully) will in the future. But I don't see anything of the sort from the XIII foundation.

XIII was a poorly executed story scenario, and the sequel was a rather unrelated mishmash. I want coherent storytelling, with characters we REALLY care about over sequels, etc, so I say nay to this.

new direction for the lightning saga? How many more are they making? Seriously I like Lightning's design at first, but she isn't interesting at all.

Hopefully that just means the game and DLC 'XIII-2' came to a close with that, now here is a new thing you have to buy to get the proper next part.

No hate for Square on the whole from me. Their publishing work recently has delivered some of my favorite recent games - Just Cause 2, Sleeping Dogs, Deus Ex: Human Revolution - as well as some pretty great looking upcoming in-house titles, what with Bravest Fairy Whatever on the 3DS and the potential that their realtime demos have shown.

Plus, what we've seen of FFXIII-Versus looks pretty cool. It's at least different. I was severely burned by FFXIV and I hated FFXIII and FFXIII-2, though, and I really wish they'd move on.

And that's fine. But they should combine all of that with a loveable character and relatable conflict.

We shouldn't be like "wow a new unrelated game to drop this pretty Action Figure into"... We should be emotional over these characters; we should feel like we know them.... and be foaming at the mouth for further adventures, like it was Breaking Bad or whatever.

Exactly. I feel that they will correct themselves.... but their salvation will not be the propping up of this mixed bag of an entry.

Wow. I mean... I could see someone getting enjoyment out of the XIII games and getting into it anyway..... but not seeing it as some level of drop from the SNES, PS1 and PS2 days? That's just amazing to me.

XIII is a worse game for its time and place than previous entries. Opinions are opinions, but that seems nearly close to a "fact" for me :P
 
Man I'm excited! That site is pretty awesome. Looks like it's going to be a really dark entry for the series. SO PUMPED!

I'm really starting to think this isn't XIII-3 now. They're really emphasizing the "new direction" thing. Whatever it is, I'm definitely wanting to see the story continue.

I liked FF for 20 years... it was practically my religion. And I couldn't give a shit about Lightning's further adventures. I think that says something (and I still love a lot of anime/RPG-related things... I haven't grown out of it or anything)

But final fantasy didnt fall off at least for me. HoweverI also started playing final fantasy games in 2008.
 
Drop the monster hunting bullshit, make the plot coherent, give Lightning a reason for being, keep Cais(sp?) as the villian, update the engine to not run like shit, keep the open format from FFXIII-2, and we got ourselves a real game at leasr until the next major FF release.

But make no mistake: FF can be better! It used to be more than this! It will hopefully be again! You should hope along with the rest of us.

If you liked it now, you will like it even more when even us old fogeys are satisfied.
 
I'm pretty sure Square would release VS XIII if the other team finished it, but don't knock one team because they releasing stuff
I mean what is Mr Kingdom Heart doing?

As for Lightning, shes a good character, up there with Cloud & Squall....Tidus can is ok too I suppose.
 
I am incredibly sick of FF13 and it's stupid characters and stupid world, but after seeing so many people have been drafted to help 14 I think they just need to crap these out to stay afloat. Once 14 is fixed they can get back to being the innovative, creative Squre I loved, right! Right?

Idk then, maybe i'm just less judgmental about the games or something. I like all the games in the series though, and I replay them all plenty (mostly on the go now, because handhelds and FF for a daily commute is an awesome thing).

For me though, I think it boils down to the fact that I just plain like JRPGs.

and still prefer 13

I like jRPGs too.... Like a fiend. I like anime too. I like sentimental plots. It can be a simple thing (story and gameplay wise) and I enjoy it. So please don't take it that this demand for a coherent plot and more compelling game design is going to take away from those elements you currently love. I think FFs are possible that will make us both gush!

Newsflash to you young fans: The themes of the XIII games are great, and I love them too. The execution is shitty. You should demand more.
 
Constant mention of NEW DIRECTION just makes me think it has to be something more than 13-3?

Maybe more of an action game styled after the Dissidia set? I mean theyve got that engine, assets and all that, I'd assume they could build something interesting out of it just focussing on Lightning as a playable character?

Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations are extremely good.

I haven't played those, and I've heard you are correct.

It's more about people who loved all the Sonic games of the 2000s just because they read the comics and they were 10 and shit.
