Final Fantasy 7 Remake Announced (First on PS4)

Because we can all play the original FFVII any time we want. There wouldn't really be much point to create a big-budget remake if they were just going to upgrade the graphics, there's so much opportunity here to develop and expand the universe. Combat wasn't something that particularly defined FFVII anyways. A lot of folks in this thread are blinded by their nostalgia goggles

“The reunion at hand may bring joy. It may bring fear... But let us embrace whatever it brings.”.

Not knocking your opinion, but "blinded by nostalgia goggles" is rarely a good argument. For a lot of people, the combat was absolutely a defining feature alongside the other defining features like the world, story progression, atmosphere, etc. I know people that played the game for the first time a few years ago and say the battles were some of the best parts.

Nomura simply said for now that the old school way of turn based wouldn't work.
I think we need to wait and see what they have planned first and then react accordingly.

Further thinking about it, how would anybody here feel if...

1. They integrated Advent Children as a playable section of the game?

2. The set up a further Sequel beyond AC? Imagine where Denzel is grown up, following the footsteps of Cloud. Imagine an Older version of Cloud, grizzled and experienced like Auron.

Uggghh. The possibility.

Put me in the camp that wants Active Time Battle to be in the remake. We have more than enough Action-RPG these days. Actual turn based fighting in RPG's is a rare thing anymore. Half of the draw for me wanting a FFVII remake is to get to experience things like the ATB system but with the visual fidelity and performance of current gen. If this thing comes out and turns out to be FFVII with XIII's battle system I am going to be supremely disappointed, and with Nomura being involved I can't say I feel even remotely confident that won't happen. As excited as I am that FFVII:Re was actually officially announced, it just makes me realize how nothing is certain yet and it can still be ruined like for example turning FFVII Cloud into the king of sulk, Advent Children Cloud.

I think another sequel would be too much.

The only way I want another sequel is if it ends with Cloud dying and having a reuniting moment with Zack and Aeris.

Hope not. I just want to experience FFVII again, don't need anymore prequel or sequel to pad it out.

In all seriousness I am fall for them updating the gameplay, including combat. I enjoyed ATB but my fondness for the game is because of the story and characters, not waiting for a bar to fill up so I can select the attack button and watch my character jump across the screen. If they can find a way to speed it up and make it more engaging while still maintaining the feel of FF7, that's my preferred scenario. I do agree with the people who said controlling the entire party is important, I don't want to play a Cloud simulator.

You are #*%%+%* right I want to unleash Satellite Beam with Barret, not watch an AI do that for me.

If they are going to make sequels to games, might as well be beloved ones. I wouldn't mind but based on the current record of sequels I could see the potential for mishandling the characters and stories.

Still I would rather more of the characters I like in the Universe they belong in than the Near nonsense of Disidea and other cross over titles.

Everyday i understand more why SE didnt want to remake it.. i mean jesus

I can't stop watching the reveal and people's reactions. All of those reactions man! It goes to show what this game means to alot of people, regardless of it's nature, if it's good or if it sucks for some - I'm tearing up everytime I watch the reveal trailer.

Man, I've never been more happier in my gaming life.

I know they're probably going for speed, but what if speed is traded for strategy? IE rather than ATB or faster ATB or action or hybrid, go full turn-based ala FFX or Bravely Default. I'm completely okay with that. Let me take time in battles to do anything. Give me more customization options in battles via materia allocation. Give the characters more character-specific abilities other than limit break that makes them individually unique and useful in different ways. Let me switch characters in and out of battles freely and see the turn order of allies/enemies, potentially manipulating them. Give the enemies more strengths and weaknesses to make the fights more thought provoking.

I'll be all over it.

Oh boy

FF 7 Remake is the killer app of the killer apps.

yall saying I WILL BOYCOTT THIS GAME IF THEY CHANGE "THING" are whack

it's a creative production; have faith, give them some leeway, it will be different, we will inevitably be disappointed about some things, but it will be its own beast, and that is for the best

the reunion at hand may bring joy, it may bring fear, but let us embrace whatever it brings

I would be fine with some changes to the battle system, but I do really want them to keep it turn-based in some way. We almost never get turn-based RPGs anymore, especially ones with a big budget.

I just started a replay of FF7 last night (playing the PSOne classic on my PSP) for the first time in like 6 years. I forgot just how goddamn amazing the soundtrack in this game is.

Hey now, pretty sure they didn't want to remake it because of things like the Battle system debate not the possible expansion of the story.

Oh Well, I just thought it would be neat to see the expansion of the Cloud character, across his life. And to see something more interesting done with the Denzel character.

I haven't played FF after 11, but I got an idea for the combat: automate so everyone's brawling, doing their default attacks (doing no damage really) instead of standing around waiting. When meters fill up that's when you pick your special action for each character. You wouldn't worry about positioning, it's all automatic.

That way its still the original gameplay, just more going on onscreen.

Are there any games already like that?

I'll just say that if the actual game has writing on the same level as this trailer, it should be enough for everyone to buy it =X
I liked that line a lot.

But yeah, I'll post a here a list of all the games where Nomura worked on more than just character design that had turn-based/atb combat:

I really think we're worrying over nothing for now. Whatever it will be someone won't be happy with it and that can't be helped.
I think it's fair to be concerned but also to wait and see what happens.

Both sides are kind of annoying in that many are rushing to conclusions while others are dismissing legitimate concerns.

Oh don't get me wrong it's cool to talk about it my post was more in line with what you're saying. I just feel we don't even know what they have up their sleeves but I think we all can agree it needs to work and each character should be usable.

Whatever happens with the combat, I think we should remain grateful we are even getting this remake. Mere days ago this still felt like an impossible dream.

I'm not saying it can't be criticized - but I think people should approach it with an open mind. The original game will always be intact in its own glory, and this doesn't diminish that.

The reunion at hand may bring joy it may bring fear, but let us embrace whatever it brings. For they are coming back.

I'll honestly be happy with whatever they decide to do... it's the atmosphere, characters, world, music, and story that made me fall in love with FF7. The battle system was nice, and I had fun with it (grinded everyone up to 99 and mastered most of my materia back in the day) but I'm not married to the idea of ATB. Whatever is in the remade game will probably be fun, and secondary to everything else. I know I am in the minority, however.

A list that looks exactly like that exists for the number of ATB games he has remade. Still I do agree it is slightly more likely to be closer to an ARPG. Still all we can do is guess, and wait for winter. This is a pretty important title, they have to be really struggling with these choices.

I still hope they include both. A remake of this scope deserves it. If they have to spice it up for people with Little patience and no flavor for the genre, then at least do both.

I forget, but what was the reason behind Cloud failing to qualify for 1st class SOLDIER (and SOLDIER in general)?

Because in AC, he seems like he can keep up with the likes of GENESIS, Angel, and Sephiroth.

And that's without even the modifications/enhancements they received.

Cloud is a normal guy who ended up as Hojo's experiments with Jenova cells and Mako infusions. This was after he failed becoming a soldier and was a grunt.

Well, tbf, he hasn't remade many games beyond KH stuff.

But yeah, Nomura is clearly taking some liberties with the project (and he has the right and ability to do so).

I wonder why they would worry about keeping so many of the original team if they were just going to completely change it from what the original team created all those years ago. Wouldn't creating something entirely different be a job more suited to "the younger generation"?

Also wonder why people keep saying, "If you like ATB, just go play FF7."

Well, if you like action rpgs, go play any other game that was created with that battle system in mind.

Here is how you update FFVII's combat. Let you swap on the fly between old-school ATB system and real time combat. Not Kingdom Hearts combat, but some form of real time control that allows for user dexterity to make a difference. Perhaps the UI switches to the old-school UI when you swap. The original OST plays in the classic ATB combat, and an updated version of the OST plays in the newer combatThe movement speed, attack speed, attack power, magic power, defense stats, effects, Materia traits etc all translate to the updated version. The updated version has limit breaks that function a bit differently. Have certain strategies and attacks/defenses more effective in the original gameplay and some in the newer combat to encourage switching and experimentation. A good way to do that would to have certain combinations with both styles so that one attack follows another by switching modes.
