Imo, it depends.
If you have all the top tier defense TMs like Patriotic Call, EV is superior because his cover has 10% more chance to proc but at the cost of 20% less mitigation compared with WoL.
Tanks need to survive most of the time. If he dies, he failed at his role.

My support units of note are Rikku lol. Refia is my best healer, but no DC yet.
Depends on the content, really. Not that I have EV, but...
What're you bringing tanks to? Trials, raid fights, and maybe the last stage or two of a story event. For the first two you know ahead of time what breaks they're even susceptible to. Often as not these days, it's one stat out of four, or ATK/MAG / DEF/SPR only, or something. You rarely need access to all four breaks at once and I don't know that it's really best to have them all on your tank even if you do.
Also, EV's SPR is not lower than WoL's. WoL is 125 base + 30 pot, with no SPR passive. EV is 128 + 26 + 20% SPR passive. They both have low HP passive procs (@30% HP, self-buff); WoL's is 100% DEF, EV's is 100% DEF/100% SPR. If you're talking about the staff/robe/Shard of Genius build, then sure, but EV's should have the DEF/HP edge then.
There's also the whole thing with EV's LB blowing WoL's out of the water entirely, and he's got Counter + Eye for an Eye for potentially solid uptime on it.

He is a good breaker! He's a great breaker actually. Depending on your units, you don't need to have him breaking on every fight, or handling every break.
Say you're in a trial against something you want ATK or MAG broken. You have Orlandeau, WoL, and 4 Bediles. The trial boss is dangerous! You can have Orlandeau use Crush Weapon while WoL uses Brave Presence/LIWU. The combined reduction to the boss's damage output lets your Bediles live long enough to chain Thundara Blade for the win.
If you had WoL handle the break instead because you want to do MAX DEEPS then maybe the boss wilds out and kills 3/4 Bediles and now how are you supposed to win? That 5% extra ATK/MAG break wasn't worth the loss of three Thundara Blades per turn. RIP.

If you HAVE to go for one always go for the Event exclusive gear....you can get 6* Awakening material all the time.

DC is definitely worth it. Refia is my best as well. I didn't have Tilith love. But Refia is awesome with DC. That and Aiden's robe is what made her really good for me.
Were you around for FF14 Raid? Y'shtola is good in her own right as well. She replaces Refia when I need it. Though Refia tends to stay my main healer... when I need it.

Rates in general seem to have taken a nose dive. I rarely ever pull on banner golds.
I'm expecting to be very upset after spending enough to grant ~80 pulls.
I hope I'm wrong. I hope this banner is where my luck takes a turn. I have 208% worth of Moogles saved just for this too.

I'm going to use EV, in large part because I'm tired of everyone having the same team lol. Plus I like the fact he can 100% provoke and aoe cover, which WoL can't do right now. His gear will just be WoL's gear for me (Lightning Hammer, Shield, Max, Grand Helm, Arsha's, HP)

So after thinking on what you guys said, I think I'll keep playing, but at a reduced rate, and with a different mind set.
Treat it as a time waster kind of game, and just do my 5 arenas and story, and the events as they come.

January 2017 JP Had event where they introduced new units. It was only 1 Rainbow banner. I bet we do have similar banner with 2 Rainbows.
Also in that banner they had these enhancements:

Let the Ramza continue do singing lessons. Aileen doesn't know how to wield spear. Agrias just got 6* why should she have enhancements (in JP she got them 2 weeks after 6* release).
Instead we get <Almost cigarettebrand trial> so obviously Marie gets enhancements and is advertised as hey now she is even better againts all this status ailments.

FF2 Event done.....died once on the ELT stage because i didnt look up the final stage and was surprised that the self-destruction attack of the bombs killed my whole squad lol.

If you posted more information some members could probably help and advice you on how to beat the stage. Otherwise its a bit difficult. No matter how much you play without the right units or strategy it wont make a difference.

Ah ok that batch isn't as bad then. Marie's enhancements are pretty good. Still would have been nice to have someone decent outside of the 5* bases.
Talking about it in general, in other games or IRL.

All my def tm's were spr and hp based lol. All in prep for wol and i just got my first and only rasler.
My main party for everything other than events is wol, 2 landu, fry, tilith. Im lazy and just use that comp to clear things. Subbing out one landu for rikku, etc when necessary. I could honestly just bring 4 dps for everything non trial related. My wol is basically the shard build. I was comparing spr based on that. You are correct having all your breaks in one basket can be bad. I need to consider that as well.

Ah shit Randi and Marie enhancements! Will do both of them. Glad for Nier to get it over with so people stop talking about it. Double Rainbow means I'm in for 2-3 9S and out.
