My char is only using 1.1 bags. My 2 retainers have things setup with plenty of space and things sectioned for cooking, fishing, carpentry/leatherworking, materia, and to be sold. No need to even spend half your time organizing, just put some thought into it.

That's nice, when you start having a ton of gear/items and need to know either which retainer certain things are in or how many you have in one retainer there is no easy way to know. I'd rather have just 1 retainer with more bad slots/spots to AH things with. Having two is just cumbersome and unnecessary.

i dont think so as a whm

only done up to garu hm tho
People who don't often heal find it difficult/stressful. It's really just different. I find it easy because it's all I ever do in MMOs, but I can understand people finding it hard. That said, I have never tanked a day in my life, so I can't compare it to that.

To be honest, even if there was meaningful character building, everyone would still build their characters the same way. That's how it is in every MMO. One or two builds are "what you should have" and the community won't accept anything else.

I guess I never got into an MMO deep enough to realize this. I always stop playing after awhile, but never for this reason. I guess I'm wondering what the appeal is, then- if there is specific class roles that must be played correctly, and your character can only develop in one certain way to prevent your character from deviating from the script.

If this is indeed representative of what an MMO is, and there shouldn't be an expectation of meaningful player decision in character building, is it mainly about socializing, with everything else kind of bullet points to provide some sort of framework for that?

They're messy because you're messy.

I have 50 WAR and 50 MNK. I have 50 CUL, 50 CRP, 35 LTW, and 31 FSH.

Pretty ignorant response. Grats on being so pro and welcome to my ignore list.

This is the first MMO I've healed in and it has helped a lot that the WHM's kit seems (mostly) simple and effective.

That's true. It's very simplistic compared to other MMOs. I really liked how varied healing was in Wow circa TBC/WotLK. Lots of different abilities that you need to learn to use at the right times for the best efficiency. In this game, most of your time is spent using cure or cure 2.

Don't care if it's a low level chef thing, still nice to see.

Healing only gets marginally difficult when the DPS (hello Archers) won't let the poor tank keep aggro, requiring me to stay on my toes and try to keep everyone healed up.

Healing is extremely simple and sleep inducing on most content. I've been queuing as it for the low wait times and almost fell asleep a couple times on trash.
By far the easiest of the trinity to play. Most of the time you hit aoe heal, single target heal, or cooldown. However, you are burdened with the fact that if you die, everyone dies (in 4-man groups at least.)

Most dps classes have to manage a priority system that takes far more effort than healing.

However, healing on hard content justifies the whole role to me. It's reverse whack-a-mole in its most extreme form.

they should make it so you can't start boss fight until everyone is in the room

this could prevent hasty tanks from pulling before everyone gets in and leechers (not really)

A good bit of the later content so far has a lot of fluid parts to it. Even if I am playing whack-a-mole, a number of fights have me running in and out of things/passing stds to my team mates/ praying. Of course once you learn/out gear those fights they go back to being pretty simple/boring. That is true for all parts of the trinity though.

That would be nice. Was in a dungeon the other day, and the tank/dps both ran and initiated the boss straight away. It was a good job I saw the timer message, skipped the cutscene and got into the room in time. If i'd have been 2 seconds slower they'd have been without an healer...

Sorta, near the end there are these adds with their beams covering the whole area, and our WHM was running around like crazy trying to save him and the Tank who was brute forcing like a boss. It was quite funny and thrilling to watch that.

Reminds me of my first -and only- successful Qarn run.

Tanking or healing is always demanding in MMOs, but I'd say tanking in FFXIV is a little tougher. A lot of it has to do with how the mechanics of the game work. Between the constant dodging of mob attacks (where the attacks don't correspond with on screen indicators or animations... you have to look at castbars), shitty tab targeting, a provoke that requires 2 skills to use, or a sluggish combat system that doesn't allow you to use "instant" abilities right after each other... you have your hands full.

I skimmed through the interview from TGS
y; some were asking isn’t warrior weaker/harder than paladin?

y; in development environment the devs are really strong with marauder

y; so I think you’ll find them out soon

y; they are really strong

Guess we can't expect WAR buffs anytime soon. D:

So a bit interested in the game. Took a quick glance over the classes and sady didn't find anything that resembles a necromancer / destruction warlock. So I'd take the second best: Something with a spear. Lancer seems to fit that quite well.

What's their job? DPS? Anything useful? Why go for Lancer instead of Marauder or Rogue or Mage?

Be a tank. I'm sick of working with awful tanks.

That's because only a certain number of groups can do an instance at a time. You have to wait for the game to reserve an instance, even if you already have a group.

This is usually only a problem with the 50 dungeons, especially AK.

I hope they'll invest in a few more duty servers, so they can un-cap how many instances can be run at the same time.

Late to the party here but just grabbed this game on greenman. For some reason I had it in my head that it was 60 bucks but it was only 22.50 with the code, so I figured why the hell not. Also in other MMOs I always had to activate a sub before getting my free trial, but this just seems to give me 30 days? That's nice.

My friend had the original game, but only played it for 3 hours before uninstalling. Trying to get him to start playing along with me, but it seems to be asking him for a cd-key and he can't find his physical copy. Assuming he gets this worked out, does he get free playtime as well?

Anyways, I've never played FF11 and my knowledge of this game is close to zero. And what I do know consists of 'catgirls' and 'floe said there's magitek armor'. I do typically play tanks in MMORPGs so that's probably what I'll settle on.

I thought Pugilist is some sort of rogue and that Gladiator is a tank, because of the shield.

Marauder - Tank
Lancer - DPS
Pugilist - ???
The other classes - ??? Any one fancy to do a short list for me?^^

Is there a reason ti pick one class for a certain job over the other? Do they have unique buffs, debuffs or abilities so you want one of each? Is there a site that has a character overview? The wiki is kinda terrible.

I mean, how is your character skillset decided anyway. I get that you have obviously a "class", is there more? Hybrid classes? etc Anything I can read that will enlighten me on the topic?

Will see if I can find a character that interests me - that's obviously the requirement to pick the game up, and I never go in blind. :p

Nearing Lvl 30 on my GLD, game's grabbed me pretty well.

When I hit 30 should I just immediately spend a day to level up the other class to unlock PLD or just start doing runs of that Hauk's Manor dungeon?

Also, how's the endgame stuff so far? I've PvE'd competitively since vanilla WoW so I'd love to hear what Coil is like.

I'll probably look into whispering someone about the GAF LS on Ultros, would be nice to run some dungeons with non-randoms.

I played the first version of XIV for a bit, so I can download the Realm Reborn client for free, right? What do I have to do? I want to try the game for a while, but I don't want to pay for it again.

Tank - Gladiator (Paladin), Marauder (Warrior)
Melee DPS - Lancer (Dragoon), Pugilist (Monk)
Ranged DPS - Archer (Bard), Thaumaturge (Black Mage), Arcanist (Summoner)
Healer - Conjurer (White Mage), Arcanist (Scholar)

All the classes are pretty well balanced in the early going. I hear a lot about Bard being overpowered but typically you can pick whichever you like most and you won't be penalized for it.

No hybrid classes or anything like that really but each class can advance to the job I put in parenthesis. Although you can take certain skills from other classes and use them on another one which allows some degree of customization but typically there are ones that are required and ones that are pretty useless.

Well... you should've done it sooner. You don't have to buy the game again, but the free time for 1.0 users ran out just recently.

Please listen to this heart warming tale (listen to this first for full 360p emotions before continuing). I don't know if I should share this story, but I need to get it off my chest.

For almost a week I have been trying to get myself an Ifrit weapon, I mainly did runs through the Duty Finder with random people. I tried and tried, I was completely focused to gain this weapon for my Warrior. I spent hours hunting for this Axe, but not once did the boss drop the weapon. I saw all the other weapons Ifrit drops in the runs that I took part in, and in some cases saw those weapons drop multiple times in a row
F*** U PALADINS. I SWEAR TO GOD I SAW THAT SWORD DROP FOUR OR FIVE TIMES
. But I forgive you Paladins.

76 tokens of Mythology = 19 runs in total.

I did this long and boring instance 18 times with no luck and that's ignoring the fail parties. The Axe didn't even drop let alone rolling it against another Warrior and I was beginning to think I was being trolled, that my class didn't even exist... That was until GAF arrived. I was saved. One run with a GAF party, my 19th run, was the one where it finally dropped. I am now the best player in the world (EU).

Thank you for reading my story.

Thanks to everyone in the FC who was a part of my runs from Chimera up through Ifrit HM today. Looking forward to Garuda tomorrow. Well, sorta. I've already beaten her a couple of times, and gotten her weapon, but the fight can be pretty rough. Let's hope it all goes smoothly tomorrow~

They don't get that free trial period from when they start playing ARR?
Well, I guess I'm not sure. Perhaps you're right.

Tanks:
Gladiator -> Paladin: Damage mitigation, sword and board
Marauder -> Warrior: Higher DPS, max HP increases/selfheals

Healer:
Conjurer -> White Mage: Spike healing, sparkly unicorn mount

DPS:
Thaumaturge -> Black Mage: The class that makes things go boom from afar. Self-sufficient resource regeneration, AoE CC
Archer -> Bard: Ranged DPS with some AoE options. Later gets party-wide buffs, and is kind of "win button" now as it's the only option for ranged DPS with no cast times in a game where every boss has a dance
Pugilist -> Monk: Raw melee DPS, heavy positional bonus for backstabs.
Lancer -> Dragoon: Less-positional melee DPS, seems to have a bit more AoE/DOT utility?

Hybrid DPS/heals depending on spec:
Arcanist->Summoner: Pet DPS plus wide variety of DOTs
Arcanist->Scholar: Pet healer with focus on HOTs

Each class can splash skills from all other classes, while equipping a "job" (basically spec) trims you down to two or three closely-related classes.

Pugilist -> Monk: Raw melee DPS, heavy positional bonus for backstabs.
Lancer -> Dragoon: Less-positional melee DPS, seems to have a bit more AoE/DOT utility?

As Monk I spend a little more time on the flank actually.

To further iterate: Monk is a fast-hitting, low tp skills, very combo reliant, and a little more advanced melee dps.
