1. Create a Square-Enix account at http://account.square-enix.com.
2. Starting on Sept. 1 at 7:00 PM (PDT) go to http://entry.ffxiv.com and register for a beta code (which will be emailed to you)
3. Register the registration code you received by e-mail on the Square Enix Account Management System at https://secure.square-enix.com/account/.
4. Download the client either from Square-Enix or the links below.
5. Enjoy! If you want to join other GAFers, we'll be on Lindblum!

Video Editors:
If you take vids with your character's name in them, these guys will help you edit it out.

.DAT File Modding:
Easier then fixing vids after the fact, do this if you have a chance.

Open up your favorite memory editor, select the process that is ffxivgame.exe

Search for text strings that are your char's name.
Modify the text strings to a dummy name of equal characters.

Start your video capturing software such as fraps.

Enjoy video captures that are relatively safe to make.

You will need to run the FF14 beta and then add it as a task, select string from the data type drop down box and type the name of your character in the search value.

Once/If you find it switch to edit MEM and change the name.

Borderless Window Utility (credit to Valru)
What it does:
Gives you that look of being full-screen mode while being in windowed mode
Unfortunately because you are in windowed mode you will see the usual fps hit compared to full-screen mode

How to use:
1)Set FFXIV to Windowed Mode in the config
2)Run the exe of your choice depending on resolution, you should see a H icon in the traybar
3)Launch FFXIV, and once ingame hit CTRL+ALT+F to go to borderless window mode

I've included 5 exes for five common widescreen resolutions: 1280x720, 1440x900, 1680x1050, 1920x1080 & 1920x1200

I have also included the script & the autohotkey installer for you to edit if you need a different resolution.

Toward the end of alpha I kinda lost my excitement for it, alpha I mean (after seeing how much smoother/better beta looks) so I can't wait for beta.

Edit: Beta download postponed! Damnit! They can never get anything right when it comes to downloads/updates.

The installation client for the FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Version was scheduled to become available for download starting at 1:00 a.m. (PDT) on Friday, July 2, 2010. However, due to technical difficulties, the release will be postponed. The new schedule will be posted as soon as the issue is resolved.

I couldn't play during any of the alpha times. Hopefully they get the client out in time for me to play it tonight. I'm curious to see what they fixed from XI, if anything.

Nothing yet. SQE is still working on getting the Beta Client Downloader to people. They haven't even announced when the Beta itself is starting.

The installation client for FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Version is now available for download.

Download the client here.

Once installation is complete, starting up FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Version will initiate the update process.

We encourage testers to download and install the client ahead of time to ensure a smooth start to the testing.

As the alpha test client cannot be used to play the beta version, we recommend you first uninstall FINAL FANTASY XIV Alpha Version from your computer by following the instructions here.

Final Fantasy XIV is going to launch its closed beta test in the first ten days of July. 4gamer editors were honored to be invited by Square Enix to have a taste of this game in advance. The following is their trial report.

Gardener is added to the Disciples of the Land, Carpenter, Tailor and Tanner are added to the Disciples of the Hand.
All equipment in FFXIV has durability, but the new classes have the ability to repair the equipment.

The new Retainer system enables players to hire an NPC named Retainer to help them sell items in a designated market, but players should choose their goods and set prices in advance. Even though players are offline, that NPC will still work for them.

The fact that they haven't mentioned an auction house yet makes me think Retainers will be replacing it?

The real thing is that they are letting players create NPCs to bazaar their items instead of doing it themselves. This is VASTLY superior to having real people logged on all night, lagging up a zone.

My only concern is that they're talking there being a fee associated with it... if it's more than the 5% they're saying bazaar sales will incur, then people will still just AFK all night to save the extra money.

The new Recruit/Search party system is interesting, I think. Curious to see how it works in practice, but it sounds a lot more manageable than the XI system.

NPC's can clog up and lag an area just as badly as a user can.

They did suggest they may add instanced area's to stop any massive lag, but tbh I can't help but think a typical AH system would be better. (of course this could still happen)

Like you say though, I doubt it will stop people shouting in city chat to sell/want expensive items to circumvent taxes and fee's.

5.5% with another 70+ hours to go.

Use utorrent with an upload at 50 kb/s. Now I DL at +200 kb/sec. ^^

Everyone is installing/paching, it's the same thing the patch is 3.35 Go so it's like installing.

Yeah I just used Square's installer/torrent client. It finally finished installing and is all ready to go now!

I followed the directions but when I save the torrent it wont start up the download. How do I begin the downloading process after I save the torrent?

Are you using uTorrent? I simply opened the torrent file with uTorrent, and it started downloading fine. Currently downloading at about twice the speed of the official patcher, of course I'm uploading at twice the speed, so I guess it all works out in the end :lol

After you have downloaded the patch file make sure you move it over to the correct folder in the my Documents/ My Games/final fantasy beta/blah/blah folder...

Otherwise it will try and patch the old file, hope that makes sense.

i just downloaded uTorrent to my computer. i searched for the file name. But it can't be found. What do I do?
