Final Fantasy XV Multiplayer Expansion - First Look + Closed Beta August 3rd

Do you think we will be able to play as female characters in multiplayer?

I don't get it. They have FF14 for godlike FF themed multiplayer. Instead of wasting more resources on this trainwreck of a game called FF15, they should concentrate on returning to form with the FF franchise and finish FF16 ASAP. Or maybe work on these FF7 remakes?

I think a lot of the stuff you're seeing in the post launch updates are basically them doing dry runs on features they want in Tabata's next game.

Offroad driving, character creator, co-op multiplayer (mode), different types of gameplay, power suits, limited time events. All of this seems somewhat odd for the existing game, but very logical as a feature set in their next game.

This way they can build the technology while getting paid for it and get feedback on what worked well and what didn't to boot.

This makes a lot of sense from a business standpoint. Hope it all helps for the next entry

The team that is working on FFXV and it's DLC is a different team than the one working on what will be FFXVI, and THAT team is a different team than the one working on FFVII Remake.

There is no one studio that works on Final Fantasy games. Each of their projects largely have nothing to do with each other.

All these games are developed by other teams.

How one is progressing has little to no effect on each other....jesus.

You really don't get it. Way more than you realize. Others have already answered best though. Nice to see you in another FFXV thread though - fighting the holy crusade against people who enjoy things.

This all sounds great. I hope this is the start of a new trend; developing a full mainline FF, and adding a multiplayer component on top of it. I guess it's unfair of me to think this, but I'm always let down when they announce a new FF annnnnd... it's an MMO.

Not that this can take the place of an MMO but are FF MMO's that much more profitable for them than mainline FF games?

Is this a different story from the base game? Or Is it a prequel or sequel? Or does it run concurrently with the base game? Theres no its canon, right?
Can it be played offline?

I believe the MMOs have made them more money than all their single player titles combined.

I will say XIV is as much an FF as any offline entry SE has put out. I'm sure XI vets would say the same.

I don't know why this would even be discussed. They're numbered entries, as relevant to the series as a whole as any other numbered game, and as much as it pains me, even more than stuff like final fantasy tactics which is "merely" a spinoff

Ehhh... I wouldn't go that far. But making people pay $15 a month doesn't hurt.

Which is why it's weird to hear people saying that adding multiplayer co-op to an FF game "isn't FF". Just super weird.

The likes of FF11 has made more money have any FF past FF games.

We don't really know if FF14 is close to reaching those heights, but due to a constant flow of subscriber money it has a chance.

I... this sounds pretty cool. Almost PSO like judging from the details? If there's an interesting weapon progression system it'd be crazy cool.

I also don't really get why people are upset they have to pay for it. It's essentially an expansion--why does it matter that it's tied to a SP game?

I'm not really a Multiplayer kind of guy, unless it's couch multiplayer.
I'm glad that we will still be able to play this alone with some AI partners.

The Phantom Pain mutliplayer was already stated to be free before the release of the game. There was no Season Pass or DLC but even the online MP was plagued by MTs and shitty paid DLC that served no purpose.

GTA 5 was similarly revealed with online mode but it took a while for them to actually integrate it into the game.

In both of the examples you listed, the MP was already confirmed to be a part of the package, it was just later implemented and added with an update.

FFXV pre-release marketing never suggested that there will be any MP mode so you bought the game strictly as an SP game. There was Season Pass sold for it which was revealed after the launch of the game and one of the component in there was expansion about online multiplayer. I just don't see how it was deceptive or it is greedy to charge for this MP when the developers have been straight forward with it.

It's not about them being transparent about it or not: My main complaint is why have your userbase locked behind a paywall when it is counter productive to the longevity of your games MP? It be better to charge for microtransactions and have it the entry for free.

The entire thing looks like a sham and that SE knows this won't do well so they want to score some quick cash before people abandon it. I hope am wrong, though.

2 weeks to a month with the content already on disc is well after release? Try again.

How about you give us examples of SP games that actually have the MP locked behind a paywall? Cause I honestly can't think of any...

Given the ridiculously bad balance of the original game (e.g. 999 AP to unlock an useless skill, or spend 48h driving to recover the cost of the skill you've unlocked to gain AP while driving),
I'm expecting this MP part to be the worst grind fest ever, and so littered with microtransations.
Please surprise me SQEX.

This is going to get brought up forever.

I swear FF fans are the most misinformed out of any other series.

"Didn't Nomura make all the games? Isn't he the president of Square?"

What exactly does Square Enix even want FFXV to be? They're throwing everything and the kitchen sinks at this, trying to appease to all of the different players with the most popular trends. All It does is diminish FFXV's identity with these shallow, afterthought experiences.

If FFXV proper actually had a solid foundation as a well-designed game from start to finish, this wouldn't be necessary.

Those of you who are looking forward to this, hope you enjoy regardless.

I just wanted the story to actually expand on Kingsglaive and make sense. The second half didn't make a lick of sense and was so badly done.

Game is basically a testing ground for Business Division 2's next game.

Tabata's future game will probably turn out to be a much more cohesive project

That said, Square Enix said that service games are the future of the industry, and said that the "HD Games" division (this covers everything that's not mobile or MMOs) would be making a bunch of them, so they could plausibly being intending to make standalone games like this as well. That said, I'm suspicious they actually mean the flagship products, or perhaps both.

Wow that's a great perspective that did not occur to me. Suddenly all of this weirdness makes sense!

Ok? What is even this paywall though? FFXV is first and foremost a SP game and one that you can easily spend 100 of hours.

It also comes with a Season Pass that offers this expansion along with 3 story DLCs. The Season Pass content was developed after the launch of the game including this multiplayer expansion. Their current aim is to let the fans who enjoyed FFXV and have Season Pass enjoy this multiplayer expansion. Perhaps they will later sell a complete edition of the game with the MP included so others who haven't bought the game yet will get a chance to do so.

I don't understand why you are still calling it a sham when details are still unclear surrounding the expansion. It could be a simple co-op mode instead of something MP related like GTA Online or MGS Online. The expansion offers story as well as new battles/upgrades and even if you don't play with friends, you will get 3 AI party members so you can play offline.

Wow, didn't expect to see anything from this until after Episode Ignis is out.
Overall, better than i expected and the details list seems promising.
I agree with the sentiment that these dlc's and updates feel like dry runs for experimental testing for future projects, but this could honestly be some good fun.

Shame that it requires both an individual purchase and ps+ to play online with friends, but i'm sure i'll have fun solo :)

Excited to hear from people in the beta!

Haven't read everything, is there microtransactions ? Online fee ? I'm wondering how they intend to monetize that, considering the base game can already be found anywhere for dirt cheap.

My left-leaning mind is happy that they're calling the expansion comrades.

This was promised stuff that was announced when the season pass was announced. It's not throwing the kitchen sink. It's not an afterthought. This was planned.

No micro-transactions announced and the in-game currency for the MP buys quests, outfits, and other things. Only online fee is the one PlayStation and XBL ask for with all their MP games. As of now the only thing to buy to get the MP is the Season Pass or by itself when it releases.

WOOOOOOOOOOO!

Was not expecting this. Hope there's a mission where we get to go the
afterlife
and save
Lunafreya
from one of the video game world's shittiest fates.

From the wording of the press statement it's not clear yet if you also need PS+ if you want to play alone with AI chars. If you haven't used up a 14-days trial for PS+, just do that (or maybe wait for the full version since the beta doesn't have all the content, e.g. the city, main characters being playable eventually etc.).

FF14 is crap imo, I am so glad they are doing this for FF15 though.

14 is a dated, archaic mess most of the time.

The point being made is they're wasting time and money on something that most likely won't even catch on. Most JRPG fans are averse to multiplayer (or at least, in my experience), it's exceedingly difficult to compete with the shooters on the market, and FF fans already have a great online experience in FFXIV.

I defy them to prove this isn't a big waste of time.

character creation? Shit, I'll have to get back into ffxv when this releases. Haven't played it since ~january. Multiplayer with this combat sounds pretty rad?

Also super cool that you can play with AI instead of people, thats a huge plus. Please let there be female characters.

You can see some on the screens (e.g. the one with the red/purple-ish clothes). Also in the main game there were female hunters everywhere in the outposts and Hunters HQ.

I still get a feeling right now all of XV DLC is like a test for Tabata's New AAA IP which is supposed to have multiplayer and use Luminous Engine.
