Firaxis interested in the DS?
In a recent update of Firaxis.com's "Ask Sid" section, in which the undisputed master of turn-based strategy, Sid Meier himself, answers fans' questions, the subject of possible DS development was brought up. Sid had some interesting things to say:

Question: Do you have any plans to develop for the NintendoDS? Firaxis' strategy games are a natural match for the dual screen, touchscreen enabled handheld. Other strategy games such as Europe Universalis II, Age of Empires, and Command and Conquer have been announced. Civilization and/or Alpha Centuari would fit in nice.

Sid: It's certainly something we're exploring. Our goal is to make great games and deliver them to players on whatever platforms make sense for the game. I agree that the Nintendo DS would be a good match for some of our titles…so stay tuned for more info. soon!

It's far from being a confirmation of anything, but certainly good news for anyone with a hankering for a Civilization DS, nonetheless.

....sounds promising. Nice to hear strategy focused PC developers like Firaxis and Blizzard are taking DS seriously. :)

Hell, even the 18th re-release of Civ II would bring in more moneyhats than I'd care to count.

My personal favorite is Alpha Centauri, but I really can't see anyone trying to put life into that "franchise."

Great idea but you gotta ask yourself who exactly would buy it?

The answer is simple: (PC) gamers that happen to a) played his games earlier and b) own a DS.

10-yr old kid walking into Wal-Mart for his next DS game probably wouldn't.

Does a) and b) warrant enough sales?

Have I missed anything? I only knew that one or two C&C games for PSP were announced(and since that day, I have never heard anything about them :) ).

C&C was rumored for both DS & PSP. Both rumors are 100% bogus though, it's not currently headed to either machine.

Question: Sid, would you like to program for NASA? Perhaps programming a robot that can cultivate all the cheese to be found on the moon?

Sid: Yea, that sounds great.

OMG SID MEIER IS PROGRAMMING FOR NASA.

No offense my friends, but for as long as it took Firaxis to port Pirates! to the Xbox (almost 9 months) ... I don't think you will be seeing any time spent on the piddly DS.

They switched publishers during the port (atari to take2), hence the delay. Also, this story is about a month old and originated from a poll on the firaxis homepage. SMAC and Civ would both be awesome with touch screen though.

I prolly should have checked the link first. This story is far more substantial than the original. :D Good news!

I think it makes a lot of sense, not just because of the touch screen but theres a lot of information that would suit dual screens well.

Though i dont think they should port existing titles, as someone said, the only people who'll buy civ & AC are people who have played them on PC. They should make a similar game with art & a setting that suit the platform a little better (i hate grainy low res pc textures).

while this might be smart (I have actually been playing the SNES version of Civ 1 emulated on my PSP to get my civ fix recently ...), I dont know how many people in that target audience actually own a DS. I know I don't, and I'm not buying one just for Civ on the go.

They should do Civilization 3, the DS can handle that.

N-Gage is getting Civ 2. :|

I'm gonna guess that you've never played Civ 2 before.

Civ 2 > Alpha Centauri > Civ 1 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Civ 3

Civ 3 doesn't need to be ported to anything. However, Civ 2 and Alpha Centauri would be great on the DS.

civ1 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> alpha centauri

alpha centauri had some of the worst visuals ever. the designers didnt have any talent!

Oh I did, thats how I got started with the Civ franchise. Im a huge fan, I actually played Civ 3 yesterday, and am in the middle of a game thats 15 hours long, even though Ive had the game since November 2001.

Never did play Civ 1 however.

Yes because everyone knows that visuals are paramount when weighed against all of the fantastic features that AC had to offer.
