Fire Emblem Fates' localization doesn't have the petting minigame

What would this have to do with not liking some elements in -some- games?

being offended by lines and colors on a screen and policing people and questioning why they like the harmless thing

it's like. I'm all alone in this

edit: i love how the conversation has shifted to "see! the lines were suggestive and lewd!"

can't have sex in games anymore

i might get the wrong idea and start treating women bad (the real reason why this is a supposed issue)

i treat my wife like a goddamn queen because that's what she is. and anyone implying otherwise has a lot of thinking to do on what exactly they're trying to accomplish.

fact of the matter is. game journalists and all their industry friends have loud voices. and nintendo of america may very well have cut this out because any presumed one sided sexual content is condemned, scores are lowered, coverage becomes antagonistic. this is very real.

but why waste time doing all this? it's harmless. not real. no one is getting hurt, no one is thinking any differently because of it

have you ever considered, that people who think differently than you, are sane normal people who act responsibly with their entertainment and how they carry themselves outside of that entertainment? no, you haven't because people like me are beneath you

i have 2 mortgages for christ's sake, LET ME TOUCH SOME FACE

As opposed to the rest of the game where you murder virtual humans?
The game has always been about killing, its the main feature and gameplay. You remove that you just have a dating simulator. So why don't people just drop the killing example cause its not the same.

Ya know sometimes you can really guess who bought this game for the shipping aspect only.

I wonder if they'll patch this in if fans ask for it loudly enough. It could be optional DLC. That way the "my games are only serious and wholesome" crowd can keep their precious copies a pure and untainted "dignified" piece of work.

Well, I understand that you find such idea weird. I would too! But then I'm not offended by this, I simply think it's stupid and I'm happy Nintendo decided to remove it. It's you the one who brings being offended and policing other people.

And wouldn't that be evil censorship?
It's not a black and white issue for me. Many here are able to think not only in extremes

sadly many others aren't

As for your original question, no I would not consider slightly changing dialogue censorship. It happens all the time in every game. Removing content doesn't.

The thread where #FE's cancellation is announced is going to be amazing. If something like this minigame is causing NoA to freak out, I imagine #FE is dead in the water.

And the disgusting part is that people will be cheering.

I mean, it is a game about war. Do you find the depiction of death to be too detailed in Fire Emblem?

I find the reaction to be kind of underwhelming to be honest. We got every anime trope under the sun in your army, but never anyone that is legit upset over the fact they have to kill people day in and day out. That's of course not exclusive to Fire Emblem. Off the top of my head, it's weird in Valkyria Chronicles as well.

Death is a pretty nasty thing and it's so simplified in fiction in general that it's no wonder we've all become desensitized to it. Meanwhile, stuff that's all about love is a no no.

Basically...

You're entirely missing the point. It's a pointless feature and I'm glad it's being removed because it's just odd and not in the least fun. I don't 'object' to it morally. I'm just fine with the decision to remove it because the game is better off without it.

Removing someone's spine in Mortal Kombat is over the top cartoon violence. I'm able to separate fiction from reality, like the rest of us I hope. The same way I can watch and enjoy a horror film without feeling like a psychopath...

It's perfectly fine to not like it, and I'm glad you're not entirely stigmatizing the feature like others, but no game gets better for removing an optional feature.

I could see the argument if it was mandatory, but then if it was mandatory it would probably be a different kind of game and you wouldn't like the entire thing in the first place.

Wait this game is rated T? It's not E for Everyone?

What's the problem then? The conversations are super tame for a rated T game.

Couldn't they just localize whatever innuendo there was to be really silly comments or something? Like how Warcraft and Starcraft units would make funny comments when you kept clicking them. Something along those lines.

Stuff like the face rubbing minigame pretty much trivializes and simplifies love, lol. Talk to people a handful of times, rub their face, and they'll tell you lewd stuff in return.

I absolutely agree! I would be very pleased if the Japanese market was less concerned with pandering to their otaku fanbases and instead produced games that a wider variety of Japanese people could enjoy. I think this would be much healthier for the overall Japanese market and would lead to more games being produced in Japan that I personally enjoy.

If they were interested in making games for a wider variety of the Japanese audience they'd start by making smart phone games instead before they noticeably toned down the lewd

I'm actually really happy there's three versions of the game. Means I can play one with NOA's localization and one with the fan translation.

Whatever your opinion may be on the whole pandering to otakus topic, do you realize that, and you are not the first one in this thread alluding to it, after having your way about what you consider appropriate or not on your own market, you are asking to remove content for another one ?

Why would #FE get cancelled? If you mean when they announce it isn't coming to the US, that's different, but was the game ever actually announced for a Western release?

Is it confirmed that nothing is replacing the cut content? I was under the impression that they only confirmed the removal of the minigame. Though I guess it would be likely that there wouldn't be any replacement, but Fatal Frame did get alternate costumes.

I don't really care either way if the petting minigame was in or not , since the core gameplay and content remain the same(though I think that the models used for them are probably pretty nice in 3D, and I'll be disappointed if those aren't utilized at all). I wonder if it was a rating thing, if it's inclusion would give the game an M rating, which I could see as easily justifiable.

The issue I have with the whole debate is that people call this censorship and say that it is a dealbreaker that the content was removed. I will agree that this is a form of self-censorship, as Nintendo are the ones making the changes to a property that they own and that they commission Intelligent Systems to develop a piece of software. But why does that have to make this such a negative change (on the principle of being against censorship)?

I saw a reply of someone who said they were an artist and that is why they do not support censorship in any form. If they were commissioned to make a piece of art and the person fronting the bill wanted to make changes to the piece (as that piece of art has their endorsement through their funding), would they feel that that is censorship?

If a person was in a technical field where they created a design or product and a client who pays for the design/product want them to change it, is that in the category of censorship?

I really have begun to find the topic of localization changes/censorship in video games to be very fascinating. It's probably because there are very blurred lines and it is not a black and white topic like both sides seem to make it out to be.

Are you certain? It looks like she has a different character class in both screenshots, and armor style changed in Awakening depending on the class.

Oh, that's a good point.

They are different classes. My bad.

EDIT: There's a good chance they'll still change it, of course

What else would he mean when the game's already out? Yes, #FE was announced for a Western release the day that #FE was announced.

SMTxFE was announced in the West first.

Again, they'll never please everyone. If I was in charge you guys would hate Fire Emblem :P But this move is trying to reach some kind of balance. But really, it was most likely axed because of costs first and foremost.

But there's nothing really wrong with #FE. The hate it mostly gets is from misinformation like that one video which was not the ending of the game, and not liking the direction they went making it its own thing, being different from expectations. People will bring up idols and the performance but it's the entertainment industry and not just idols as each character is in different parts of the industry. It's mostly a silly side game that can be lighthearted with a ton of references and parodies to real life people and characters from other games.

Didn't care either way. I honestly found it a little much but to each their own. I just want my damn Fire Emblem game.

*patiently waiting for more Special Editions to appear out of the wild*

in the vid she's a knight, in the image, she's a general. I think. (I didn't actually use any generals in my playthrough lol)

Stuff like the face rubbing minigame pretty much trivializes and simplifies love, lol. Talk to people a handful of times, rub their face, and they'll tell you lewd stuff in return.

It's a videogame. Going by normal FE "non simplified love standards" in an application to real life, I'll have to fight by another person's side like 50 times and then I get to have children with them.

I really don't even see how that game could be localized without being an utter mess.

It's going to be a horrendous mess and I'll still buy it.

It's face touching.

It's viewed as sexual because some of the japanese dialogue has implications, and in general face touching is weird as shit.

Why is face touching seen as weird in the first place anyhow?

I mean what's so wrong with a physical display of affection?

Take this seen from the most recent episode of Gundam for example
CZfExjZUEAAzZwA.jpg

The main character stops to take a moment to showing his concern in a very touching manner with nothing but a simple caress.

Didn't #FE bomb horribly in Japan? I could see it getting cancelled more just due to how its J-Pop themes would be even more niche in the west and result in sales that don't make up for the localisation costs.

I still want it to come out so I can play it out of morbid curiosity though.

easy for you to say m8. you've won already. the big bad sexual content is removed

what you advocate here is an ideal or principle which tramples on people's rights to decide for themselves what they want. it's an ideological issue, and it's nothing against you as a person, but when faced with an ideological issue like this, i can't take it sitting down

i'm trying to take it sitting down, believe me

have you considered, not using the mode? and leaving it in for the people who do want to use it?

you are twisting this so i look like a dumbass when i disagree with you.

and i'd like to point out that i already do look like a dumbass

I agree, I was responding to violence and death being simplified in games too.

Like what would be considered inappropriate in Japan? Basically, just genitals?

Japan has some pretty harsh guidelines on a lot of stuff. Even bloodless games like inFamous carry a CERO Z simply because you can kill civilians in it, which is a big no-no over there.

Stuff like the face rubbing minigame pretty much trivializes and simplifies love, lol. Talk to people a handful of times, rub their face, and they'll tell you lewd stuff in return.
Yeah what's next, FE trivializing and simplifying something like war with its gameplay? That would be so dumb

Thank god this completely optional thing I didn't like was removed so that no one else will be able to use it. THANK GOD.

Yeah, I can't support this. Dropping this. Might pick up dragon's dogma instead.

Do you really think these people are all the same?

They type of person that flips out when Nintendo localizes something and cuts it is probably the type of person super into the petting shit in the first place.

So you are basically saying that I would be one that would go into that "petting" mode and enjoy it? You are wrong, I would just ignore it but happy that's there if I wanted to. It's a feature of a game that has nothing wrong and is COMPLETELY optional. Most people would ignore such a feature and VERY few people would enjoy it. Things go both ways.

I don't think these two schools of thought are entirely mutually exclusive.

I'm personally not a huge fan of the whole thing, and would rather the time and money spent making it have been spent elsewhere. But since it's already in the game, it feels weirdly paternalistic of NoA to remove it after the fact. Having a big company decide what is and isn't OK for me to experience actually creeps me out more than the original minigame in the first place. Which I don't actually find all that creepy, especially by dumb anime standards, just weird, out of place, and kinda funny.

This is more or less my point of view. However, these days it's either Black or White with no middle ground.

They also changed Effie's armor

Her ass is no longer exposed

Different classes, nothing is confirmed yet

Phew I was about to go on a huge rant about how fire emblem is dead and Nintendo should quit gaming forever.

It's a video game. I need interactions to express that love.
