It's not as bad as some people make it out to be. It's still a great game, and the streamlining wasn't necessarily for the worse in many cases. I'd say a lot of the "flaws" are subjective, and even the more glaring ones are really only noticeable if you've played the earlier games. Regardless, there are plenty of features in Awakening that I want the series to move forward with.
The problem with Awakening's soundtrack is that the most mediocre/boring songs are the only ones you hear for most of the main campaign. The default grinding map track is the best normal battle music and you never actually hear it outside those circumstances.
With those systems, then I would recommend Fire Emblem 7 -- it's the one that's just called "Fire Emblem" for the GBA. (Should be able to play it on your DS Lite.) That's a really great entry.
If someday you ever snag a GameCube and can find a decently priced copy of Path of Radiance (which may be impossible these days), then I would highly recommend playing that one.
This is my first Fire Emblem game so I started a Normal/Classic game. Loving the cut scenes and everything so far. It's been a long time since I've put any meaningful time into an SRPG (FF Tactics) .
Is there anything a newbie should know? I noticed some weird things when equipping weapons, from what I've read, it looks like weapons degrade/break over time, so it's best to stockpile them in the convoy or give them to characters to hold?
Ehh. Nah. The map design wasn't punishing enough for me, the pair up system is incredibly powerful to the point of destroying a lot of the difficulty, and the infinite exp is too easy to abuse (I have the same problem with Sacred Stones). Even Lunatic+ can be overcome by judicious grinding. And "only noticeable if you've played earlier games" isn't an excuse IMHO :/
Still, I did like it and it is a good game.
I think the support system is streamlined, visible, and ultimately improved (faster, no more affinities, no more 5 supports total, etc.), and I wouldn't mind them keeping that system going forward. I may be in the minority on this one. I'd like more stuff like cavalry getting to move again, and maybe shove, but it's not like I miss biorhythms or some other fluff features.
I used the phrase "only noticeable if you've played earlier games" to make it clear that Awakening is a great game on its own, and to balance out some of the hardcore FE players putting it down. I think it's a perfectly valid thing to say about Awakening, especially given that most people will start there.
