First DOA4 Ad

Can't say I agree with the ad...or at least one side of the meaning (the visuals themselves). DOA4 looked like an upgraded XBOX game. I still stand by that. There was nothing going on that wowed me. Considering just how impressive their work on the original XBOX was, I must say that it was incredibly disappointing.

Don't really care, though, as I'm no fan of the series. Now, I just need a sequel to NG. At least this confirms that it's going on sale this winter (not that anyone expected otherwise). Maybe they'll get busy on something else right away so we won't have to wait 4 years for another NG...

Interesting that one of the "specs" is HDD support, though...

For reference, DOA3 pics

Stick Figures vs. 3D Models....yes that makes a difference because it's a HUGE leap

But adding more detail on that face? It's very minor in the grand scheme of things.

That model looks pretty awful...and yes people, it can look much better. It's as if Tecmo's modeling abilities haven't really improved at all, they've just resorted to throw more polygons in each sequel. BTW, do they outsource their FMVs?

Seeing this game on certain sets may make a difference. Case in point:

1) I first saw the DoA4 video on the live ms conference stream. Looked good but not a huge step up like others have said

2) I then downloaded the hi res trailer. You could see more detail and the game looked better.

3) Lastly, I was switching through channels a couple weeks ago when I noticed Cinematech started on G4. I decided to keep it on to see what they were showing. They were showing E3 trailers. Cinematech started out with the DoA4 trailer (In widescreen mode btw so it was letterboxed on my tv) which I viewed on my 27" Wega. It looked close to breathtaking on my TV. With the larger size screen I could see so much more detail in the clothing animation, backgrounds, regular animation, that I couldn't see on the tiny feeds (Even the 640 X 480 hi res one). When I saw the trailer I thought, "Hot damn!", because the online feeds didn't look nearly as nice. When I saw that I imagined what playing this game on a 34" or bigger widescreen set will be like. It is going to be awesome and why I need a new TV! :D

In terms of geometry and texture detail, it's a large step up, however in terms of how it looks, the jump isn't so large. The jump in detail from DoA1 to DoA2 was absolutely crazy. DoA2 to DoA3 was pretty big as well. DoA:U to DoA4 isn't so obvious.

The game needs a new lighting model. The doll look is the artstyle, they can keep that. I don't personally care for it terribly much, but it doesn't really bother me. But they NEED a new lighting model. It's been more or less the same since DoA2. When the clothing physics are done(Itagaki has said they are not currently), I can't wait to see them.

The danceclub and thunderstorm(especially) levels and other stages in DoAU says you are wrong.

And whoever pointed out the lack of nostril shadowing.... Jesus dude wtf? :lol

for the japanese audience that ad is pretty much perfect, it hits the lolita/anime audience with a teaser image. for the us probably a tina boob shot with ryu in the background or something.

THANK YOU

I'm so tired of Ikaragi or whatever his name is talking about how amazing this game looks. It's just a Xbox 1 game.

When did he ever say it looked amazing?

I even remember his saying that it wasn't up to standard.

Seriously, can you get me some quotes?

the ad says "the most beautiful in the world"

Wow, now that's some shitty look shit.

I do hope they opt to go "realistic" with DOA5.

I know, it's not DOA's style, but--

DOA1 looked and played like XY
DOA2 looked and played like XY
DOA3 looked and played like XY
DOAU looked and played like XY, wait, it's online so looked and played like XYY

DOA4 will look and I'm pretty damn sure will play like XYY

(XY stands for the substance and style of game...huzzah!)

Change fuckin something, if you aren't changing the gameplay than at least change the art style and graphical presentation.

It didn't say the most techincally advanced though. The poster's main beef is that it looks like an Xbox game. Not that it's not beautiful.

If you're referring to the lighting comment, they really dont. Theres a bit of dynamic lighting going on, but in terms of new effects, dynamic shadowing, self shadowing, etc....there has been no change. Adding soft shadows that characters cast over themselves would enhance the look of the game TREMENDOUSLY I think. Gears of War has soft shadows all over the world, I don't see why on earth Team Ninja couldn't add it to the characters in this game.

The main problem with the lighting in DoA games is that it has a tendency to look flat. It's tough to explain what exactly I mean by this, as I'm not really sure what causes it, but it's a problem that Ninja Gaiden shares as well. Doesn't keep the game from looking good, but it keeps the game from really leaping out of the screen, to me.

EDIT - Watching the E3 trailer again, I think I've nailed down my problem with the lighting. It seems the characters and environments are lit completely independent of each other. I can understand the decision not to go with a global illumination model, it's one I would agree with as I don't think this game has much use for it, but that wouldn't prevent the team from rigging up a way for the characters to appear to become darker when they move into an area that is shadowed. Games have been doing that for a LONG time. Theres really no reason for them not to do this.

It's funny how Xbox 360 games reek of first gen quality.
Maybe because they are the first generation of games for this particular console?

Well, afaik even most Japanese people don't like this ad image of DOA4 and are puzzled why Tecmo does this. Just compare it with for example a Final Fantasy character.
