First Doom Movie Review

I thought IGN had a film site for awhile now, why are there only reviews from this year?

I wasn't sure if i was going to see it, but all the trailers use that crappy FPS camera shot, like they are trying to make it look like the game. I don't think I would see it for free.

I saw the trailer. THe First person perspective /homage to the game actually worked quite well. And I can tell you since I absoltuely hate FPS And I get motion sickness from them. I got motion sick from the trailer.

Thumbs up.

Is that Japanese stereotype/myth/assumption true about FPS?

Unfortunately, some of the other things that are present in the game are in ample supply in the movie as well: thin character development, cheesy dialogue and lack of story. That said, this is easily the best videogame-to-film adaptation yet (only the original Resident Evil approaches its production value),

Well that's all I needed to read. Let me know when this movie hits Starz.

I mean character development, good dialogue, and story these really aren't essential components of a good movie. :lol

so wait, the monsters aren't demons?

What the fuck? It's not like Doom has a lot of plot points to stick to. How the hell does Hollywood continually fuck things like this up?

Edit: I mean, the whole basis for the name "Doom" is the fighting through Hell part. I can't get over this. It's probably the dumbest script decision I've ever heard of. Why did they even bother calling this movie "Doom"? Why didn't they just call it "Resident Evil: Mars", or something that might even be tangentially related in terms of plot.

The FPS shots in the trailer were awesome. Its the only reason I'm thinking about seeing it. I mean I'm not 13 and usually don't go to see a movie because The Rock is in it.

I think your brain just have to be wired a certain way. I don't think its racial but based on the type of game you play. My friend Nobu is a total bannana when it comes to gaming. He hates anime themed games, rpgs, and loves his Halo 2. I grew up on the more static games, mainly strategies, rpgs, simulations, platformers and I never played an FPS game until the N64 era, and hated it.

Yes, I never owned GoldenEye. I had FFVII.

That's the money scene. It's a four minute action sequence seen entirely from first person as a homage to the game. The weapon is primarily a chainsaw, but I think he gets a gun too.

That's the pay off of the entire movie :P

I got headaches playing Metroid Prime, but not Goldeneye. For me, I think it depends on how many things flash on the screen, in which Metroid Prime has tons of it. Goldeneye was fine though, for me.

i knew it!! it look cheesy as hell. plus it remindds a lot of the first resident evil movie too. expiriments go wrong, company gathers elite squad, squad enters the "Hive"/"Hell", and bada bing bada boom end of movie. and after seeing the final trailer like a month ago, me and my buddy stop placin the trailer on the films for the last couple of weeks. and i thought i read iD saying the monsters were from hell after lot's of fan's complain about the monsters being created genetically? was that just damage control? cuz i know i first read the monsters being genetic and stuff.

next thing you know, the eventual diablo movie will be about some renegade mexican religious fanatic.

I haven't been this excited about a videogame movie since Street Fighter.

Haha

But yeah from the trailer I saw it was all "when scientists crack the human genome things don't go to plan" or some crap like that, at which point I was all WTF I mean GENOME DISCOVERED... IN 2000!!! and to my knowledge those scientists encountered no demons, or maybe this film is the untold story of that terrifying day in modern science.

What?

WHAT?!

They're not from Hell!

NOOOOOO! NOOOOOOOOOO! You BITCH! YOU BITCH!!

So it's still true, a Doom movie and no hell? The mind boggles.

It even had the perfect setup with the space gateway they use, let's say they keyed into some unknown frequency and completely 'wrong' destination and bingo you got demon hellspawn!! But no, it's the human genome!!

They could always correct the hell thing with Doom the movie 2.
The scientists used genes from a source related to a top secret teleportation experiment which can be revealed in the possible next movie.

Starz? Nice try, think straight to TNT.

The Rock's the best thing going for a Hollywood action hero these days, he just needs to pick better scripts. Doom should be well worth the future Netflix rental.

I saw it last week.

First of all... I agree with most of the stuff in the review. I'd give it a 2/5, the first part is a little better, but once they start blasting stuff to heavy metal I'm a bit lost and the fps part is laughter all the way. Also the story and how it's explained (ten minutes after you figured it out for youself) is awful. This is not a space horror flick, more like a popcorn and laughter action flick and well maybe that's all the thin storyline can muster. I was hoping for something with an atmosphere like Alien or Pitch Black, but I realised that was totally unrealistic. The Rock is great in my opinion. He carries a lot of the movie and given the rather nice twist (not unpredictable but still) to the story that is very important in my opinion.

Still I'd rent the dvd once it's out (shouldn't be too long). It's good for a laugh and it's far from being at the bottom of the pile when it comes to feature films based on games.

The trailer has it wrong. It's about a new pair of chromosomes discovered in an archeological dig.

"It's this place. It's hell."

Is one of the key lines, but they are stretching the hell connection. :lol

Absolutely. Regardless what people tell you, I'm convinced it's a racial trait. I don't see how conditioning could cause little kids to get dizzy and throw up so easily.

You're probably right. I remember at least one website moaning about Doom 3 being set in Hell. FFS get a life, you idiots!

It's a stupid decision though. Doom is about Hell and demons. That's it. That is the ONLY major point of the story. You could change almost everything but those two things, and it would still be Doom. FFS the film is ruined...I'm not going to bother watching it. I might buy it 2nd hand in a few year's time

While I totally understand your point, you have to admit your position looks a little bit humorous.

"What the hell? No demons, hell, or evil shit? Fuck this, I'm OUT."

It's annoyed me because they changed the material so much that I've lost interest in it. Doom was about evil demons...remove that and it's not Doom any more. It's another generic action flick with a license tacked on to attract people.

I've seen it, and it FUCKING SUCKS. Then again I'm not an ADD kid who masterbates over gore and cheap scares, so it probably wasn't meant for me.

The Rock has one singular good line (OK, one good delivery of a mediocre line) and that's all the fun I had with it.

Doesn't look that bad to me, especially judging from the source material. Doom was always quite simple and watered down as far as story and plot were concerned so I don't expect the movie to be any different, except with one liners and big monster shoot outs.
