First Look at The Witcher 4 Tech Demo

Magic they use for cape:

All this stuff is experimental in 5.6 so it will take quite some time before we will see it in commercial games.

It's already there with update in 5.4 version. They talk about full suite of things shown in this demo being experimental in 5.6.
The nanite foliage seems like the best new feature. I mean, people were asking for it for years. It's nice that they found some way of getting it to work. Better than copy pasting fake looking trees and shrubs around.

Showed my wife the footage specifically to get her opinion on the horse and she immediately says "Oh, that looks like a Fresian" and... yep, sure does :messenger_grinning_smiling:

Which fits - they are from the Netherlands which seems to be partly the inspiration for the culture of this area of the game world.

Ten years from now even with mods on a high end pc this game won't look nothing like this. Don't be foolish, peeps.

i showed my wife and she said, "who gives a shit dork, why are you showing me this?" where did yall meet these chicks that are into this stuff and are actually still good looking!?

And they fixed Ciri model .. she looks much better...
"This is the same model we used in last year's trailer. Ciri's face is an exact copy of her model from The Witcher 3, adapted to work with the latest version of MetaHuman technology [a facial animation technology developed by Epic Games - editor's note]. Two minor changes were introduced to improve the quality of the animation: slightly raised eyebrows and a more relaxed eye area. The latter change was visible in the trailer, but we have since removed it," the company stated.

The cape physics are unbelievable. Literally.

The way it moves when she jumps the rocks or dismounts the horse is unlike anything I've ever seen.

And all of it, 60fps on a PS5.

Are we just supposed to believe CDPR looked at Unreal Engine for a bit and magically unlocked some next technological rendering paradigm?

doubt.jpg
60 FPS at a likely sub 1080p resolution. That compares with 1440p30 for the first UE5 demo, which had a substantially slower implementation of Lumen and Nanite.

The final game will likely not look like this as it will be running at a higher base resolution.

Here is quite good video with easy to digest analyse of the video (in polish so you need to rely on translation). The guy is a dev from Poland that has his channel where he talks about game dev and games generally. He is known in polish game dev community.

While it's in Polish, the captions are too. So it's still a pointless vid for us English speakers.

That's what I keep saying and people just refuse to believe it.

You can chose English in settings for automatic generation.

It's the same thing with many differences between trailers. Many times (but obviously not always) people are talking about downgrades, or changing the models, but there are many factors that can make the differences without actual change to the model. Lighting setup, camera lens/fov and angle, blendshapes, etc. I'm not saying that Ciri is the same (I haven't made a focused comparison yet) but I can believe that that's the case.

Now let's just hope you're still around in 10 years

Centuries from now, I'll still be kicking. My body is a temple, after all. A temple optimized by the pinnacle of processed food science, elevated by the choicest seed oils, and its lease on life perpetually renewed by Totinos™

When this game comes out in the next 10-15 years. It better look exactly like this. Down to the last pixel in every little shadow and reflection. Or, I am going to post an angry comment on the internet.

This looks like witcher 3 on high settings. 12-13 yrs later after witcher 3 and this is all they could muster. It's dissapointing.

If you want to see a graphical jump, look at the difference between witcher 1 and 2. And that's 4 years only.

It's also dissapointing they're targeting 60 fps on base PS5. Next gen will be arriving soon when witcher 4 releases, not to mention PC for those wants a higher fps experience. I'd rather they focus on internal graphics first like gta 6.

Rewatch the video in 4K/60. TW3 does not look like this on high settings.

The new nanite/voxel based foliage is quite impressive and the major standout, definitely better than the Speedtree methods. Something tells me GTA6 will be taking their foliage systems to the next level as well and possibly their own form of voxel based foliage. And their NPC systems will continue to be unmatched.

I literally just installed Witcher 3 Next-Gen version on steam today and also added the HD reworked mod on top for higher res textures and some geometry.
Let me assure you, even with RT on FULL + DLSS 4 transformer model forced on my 4090, the game still loks dated AF compared to the UE5 demo.
Actually pretty disappointed with the RT in Witcher 3, reflections on water look blurry af, shadows have visible pop in at a distance and then there is the traversal stutter (did they copy that from UE? :messenger_grinning_sweat:).
Game still looks fine maxed out and the atmosphere is great.. but let's be real here man...

Maybe because of Witcher 4 trailer looks blurry AF so I don't feel impressed at all :goog_cautious:
Low resolution is just one aspect but i hear you, i like my games to look crips, that's why i'm gonna play w4 on a monster pc and not on an underpowered console that has to use all the tricks in the book to even run this game decently.

On topic - witcher3 even back before all the downgrades never looked as good as witcher4. The lighting on display here has a CGI quality to it.

Hate on CDPR all you want for not delivering on their early trailers, or the buggy launch state of their games, but saying w4 looks like w3 says more about your eyesight than it does the game.

Edit2 -

Alright, looking at this picture, I can see what Danny is talking about. It's definitely a step up from w3, but maybe not 2 console gens better than the w3 ps4 image

If we get anything like this visually in the coming years, come the tail end of this gen, with good parity, I am going to be a very happy man. The particle effects and scaling demonstrated were mighty impressive for me. It was a cool technical demo that took me back years ago with the Agnis video by Square.

Ciri looks damn great.

She went from botox mom to cute babe again, hard to believe it's just camera angle and light conditions

I don't know what differences you are seeing.
She looks exactly the same with different lighting and fov, for years my job was 40% lighting and camera work.
People are just going "she looks pretty to me now" and deciding that they must have changed her because the have no idea why or maybe they just wanna own the woke and go "see devs are listening".

I'm not gonna pretend there are some mysterous unexplained changes because here, there aren't, its the same.

They have 4K/60 versions. The one on the PlayStation YouTube is 4K/60.

Watch it on a good monitor or 4K TV, not a phone, etc..

It's very blurry. A higher quality screen just makes it easier to see how blurry it is compared to other games.

Yeah the DF video just put out, they say it looks like it's targeting 1440p but up-scaling to it from a lower resolution.

Probably TSR from something at or below 1080p.

looks great, but 60fps RT + these visuals on ps5...

whatever a couple notches below "cautiously optimistic" is, thats me

And a lot of people are noticing a difference so who is right? like i said, your opinion is as good as ours because even if devs fixed her face after the backlash, they are gonna lie\stay silent about it, i would do the same instead of admitting a change.

That's not bad really given this is a base PS5, and up scaling tech has significantly improved since then. I'm very impressed on the sharpness quality of DLSS 4.0 on PC to play my games in rich detail.

Only wishing but good things for thos side given history of Cyberpunk 2077 at launch. I don't imagine they will attempt that again.
