Why? Batman Begins is extremely over-rated (like Casino Royale). Horribly shot action with poor edits, no badguy worth giving a shit about (like Iron Man and Superman Returns), Batman Voice, etc. There's nothing memorable about the film for me, outside of maybe the ending. TDK on the other hand is pretty awesome and fixes most of the problems (except the Batman Voice)

edit: this isn't technically a thread derail but I'll quit while I'm ahead

SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH

Depp's going to show you Bale nuthuggers what kind of talent and charisma a real Hollywood mega star should have.

I'm glad Depp is back to doing this sort of thing again. Can't wait to see what he does with this role. I'm expecting a bit of Agent Sands from Once Upon a Time in Mexico, which was by far the best thing about that movie.

Depp is a great actor and extremely entertaining to watch.

I wonder what voice Bale is gonna bring into this role. It's gonna be tough to one up batman voice..

Mann is whats drawing me in here, not Depp or Bale (both of which Id personally like a little break from).

I think this is one of those times where Bale is playing the straight, law-abiding guy and will inevitably be outshone by the wily, charismatic villain.

Just like 3:10 to Yuma.

And that Batman movie.

They couldn't be more different as actors; you're comparing apples to oranges, here.

The difference you are seeing is TALENT. They are both handsome leading men. Depp could have starred in 310 to Yuma, The Prestige, and Batman easily and pulled off just as good if not better performances than Bale did. Bale on the other hand couldn't even imagine playing the roles Depp has (Pirates of Caribbean, Blow, Once upon a time in Mexico).

Now I don't dislike Bale, he's decent enough, but he is nothing special. He almost always plays the same type of character, the quite cool type but even in that very narrow role he's bested by many.

This won't be the only time they'll be together. TDK Returns. Believe.

Johnny Depp as the Riddler would be so great. Jack Sparrow as a villian in a ridiculous costume fighting Batman? Sold.

i heard someone (i think someone on the /filmcast, but not entirely sure) say this was pretty boring and straight-forward. not that whoever that was is the last word on its quality, but i'll temper my expectations--especially considering how i felt about miami vice.

Can't speak to the boring part, but as for straight forward, its a historical film, so you kind of have to play it fairly straight.

I TOLD YOU I WOULD FUCK UP YOUR LIGHTS
Sigh. I've fired a Thompson and let me tell you, you don't one-hand that motherfucker. I don't care if you're the goddamn Batman or not.

how long exactly is "a little break"? depp wasn't even in a single movie in 2008.

yeah. i feel kind of refreshed by the fact that i haven't seen depp in something in a while. he was becoming dangerously overexposed in 2007 for my taste, and though it wasn't the case, it seemed as if every popular movie (or hell, even RUMORED movie) was all about johnny depp, johnny depp, have you seem him in PIRATES?, johnny DEPP! when you get inundated by a performer to that degree--even someone as talented as him--it just gets old as fuck.

anyway, i'll agree with whomever it was that said earlier they're glad to see depp back to doing this sort of work, i.e., not zany characters with googly eyes who are supposedly inspired by aging british rock stars. i want something more subtle from him, just so i can remind myself that he's capable of it.

yeah, i'm glad he seemed to take it pretty easy for a while. i just wonder why quite a few people still stay they're sick of him. public enemies will be released on july 1st, and that would mean there was more than year and a half between it and sweeney todd. other than pulling a daniel day-lewis and going to italy to make shoes for five years, i don't really see what more you could ask of him.

As long as it takes to wash the stink of Pirates off him. I know its been 1.5 years now since the last one, but its still the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Depp, which should never be the case. I should associate him with Donnie Brasco or the like, not with chewing scenery and hamming it up as Jack Sparrow.

two of my favorite actors/two of the sexiest actors that I can think of? Hells yeah!

I love how versatile Johnny Depp is, and Christian Bale...is just Christian Bale!

*at a loss for words*

Sounds to me like you have a weird way of looking at actors if you are unable to get over a role of theirs you didn't like. I have no problem associating actors with the roles I liked the best and not get all bothered about the stuff I didn't like. And after all the cool stuff Depp has done I don't blame him for going for the big pay day in the Pirates movies.

Bale's one of the better actors working today; he takes his craft seriously, and he seriously applies himself to whatever role he's performing. Look at The Machinist; most people only see the weight loss, but he gives a legitimately great acting performance in that movie as well.

You're not giving Bale nearly enough credit as an actor.

He's done subtle quite recently. Depp got an Oscar nomination for his work in Finding Neverland, which was by far his most reserved and subtle performance ever.

But yes, I otherwise agree with you.

Is this movie based on John Dillinger?
According to the website that the OP posted, it's about John Dilinger and the detective (?) who was on his case.

sorry for the triple post (computer is being slow). I tried deleting two of the posts but it wouldn't let me...
