:lol I knew there was something weird about that part.

"We're here for the bank's money, not yours" - wasn't that exact same line used in HEAT?

It's something Dillinger supposedly said in an actual holdup.

And yeah, that CG Depp is really weird and ugly. Hopefully whatever the hell that is, is cleaned up in the final film.

The trailer looks really weird. I'm not sure if it's the handheld camera feel to something that's supposed to represent the 1930's, or the seeming lack of depth of field/extreme clarity (2:17 for instance), or the lighting they were going for. If not the combined look of all three.

edit: Ok, I see it's been talked about. I was looking for info on how this was filmed. Is this the red camera or just digitally shot?

Haha, that looks hilarious.

Bale is such a boring fucking actor. I don't understand the love.

American Psycho? Rescue Dawn?

His Batman films are fuck awesome, but they aren't Bale at his best, acting-wise.

His Batman voice is annoying as fuck. I can't believe some people actually like it.

This movie looks to be pretty great however.

i watch these trailers and--though i normally hate people who say this--i feel like i've seen the whole movie. the entire story arc is right there, apart from the very end. they show pretty boy floyd being shot. they show johnny depp being caught, and then breaking out of jail.

i suppose there could be more to the movie's plot, or it could be that the plot itself isn't the point so much as deep character studies of the two leads. but if it's anything BUT those two scenarios, the marketing has really sort of screwed the pooch on this.

The trailer for Funny People was even worse. It gave away TWO of the film's plot twists. :lol

I love the guys Bruce Wayne and even his Batman(Fuck the haters). He's been great in all the movies he's been in(at least IMO). But I always say he works better as an evil psychopath, heck he would make an excellent Joker.

I want to see him as more of a bad guy in his upcoming movies.

Hell if Nolan ever makes a 007 movie I'd want him to be Bond.( I said that mostly to anger Solo and rile him up.)

The preview for the remake of Last House on the Left really did give away the whole movie.

This preview I'd disagree on for now, because obviously I havn't seen the movie. But there's so much to Dillinger's story that can be covered, and his arrest and escape from jail are really just a part of that and not the centerpiece. I'm a big Michael Mann fan so I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Although that CG Depp does look like ass, please fix that.

I liked him in American Psycho. Other than that though... he's pretty much playing the same character over and over.

At least be honest, you have seen three Bale movies.....American Pshyco, Batman Begins, and Dark Knight

I know its just one review from an user on IMDB but I'm some how skeptic Mann can pull this off after Miami Vice.

Public Enemies was screened last night (Thursday Feb. 12) in Sherman Oaks, Ca. Going into it I knew what the movie was, who was in it and what the story was more or less about. First, the movie ran about 2hrs 40mins. Probably an hour too long. If anyone is going into this film expecting to see Johnny Depp in another masterful performance, you'll be left empty handed. And when it comes to Christian Bale, who drops tons of weight for "The Machinist" then puts on 60 pounds to play Batman right after, and who is as serious an actor as they come, appears for the first time, you're left asking yourself... "who is this? why is he here? and why do i care about anyone in this movie? To the unfortunate end, you never get these questions answered.

There is not one single stitching of character development with ANYONE. You don't know who anyone is, except Dillinger and Bale's character. The movie is called "Public Enemies" but you never get a sense of what that means. You never see the newspaper headlines, you never see the PUBLIC'S perception of him or his gang and the movie botches, at ever turn, the 3 main stories its attempting to tell. (1)The story of the start of the FBI (with Billy Cruddup as J. Edgar Hoover), (2)the end of the days of robbing banks with the beginnings of prohibition and gambling coming in. (3)And the fact that the mob is upset with Dillinger because the newly formed FBI puts into law that anything over state lines is now a Federal crime. This is turn, turns the entire mob against Dillinger. Their enterprises are heavily thrown off track due to this. But you get one scene with Frank Netti that' suppose to explain this???

Bottom line is this; this movie tried to be something it wasn't. Michael Mann is at fault. When you see the movie, don't complain to the theater about the "projection" problems. There aren't any. Its the type camera that Mann has become accustomed to, and it has a VERY cheap, video look to it. And for the love of God, take your Dramamine because the swishy- bouncing, rocky, jerky camera crap will make you wish for the Blair Witch. You are basically dumped in the middle of the story about a bunch of stuff you don't know or aren't familiar with and are expected to just tag along, but all it ends up feeling like is coming in an hour late on an A&E Biography on Dillinger. This is not the Christian Bale or Johnny Depp you know. It's not them at all. They showed up, said some lines and went home. Michael Mann should consider hanging his spurs.

Also I watched Heat today for the first time, really loved it despite the running time. The bank robbery scene still holds up very well in this day and age, would have been OMGWTFBBQ at it's release. Also the score at the final scene was so awesome.

Saw this trailer both times before Star Trek, and there are no words for how horrendous that CG Depp is (it looks so much worse on the big screen). Even worse, why the fuck did they need it? Is Johnny incapable of hopping over a desk?

As much as I love Mann I have been hearing for a few months some less than positive feedback surrounding the rough cut of Public Enemies...I just am praying those issues have been resolved in final cut.

It isn't so much the HD Camera as how Mann is having scenes lit. In Collateral he did a great job, but he used a film camera for the Club Fevor scene. Then on Miami Vice he went to extremes with barely putting lights and only using digital.

I read one comment from a crew member on Miami Vice and he said how stunned he was the way Mann and Dione Beebe were measuring the light levels. The look was totally intentional and went against the normal way of doing things. I also recall recall a comment from Beebe where he said they didn't want to make Collateral part 2 with the look of Miami Vice.

So I wouldn't blame digital as much as Manns' fascination with being able to shoot in very dark enviroments with digital. On the Collateral extras DVD there is a bit of talk about filming in dark enviroments that is intresting to watch. Actually all the extras on Collateral are fun the watch.

I like Mann's movies, but after Miami Vice (terrible POS) I'd like to see the quality come back to his stuff from the 90's.

Miami Vice is 100% pure Michael Mann. If you didn't like it on at least some level, you probably arent that big a fan of Manns.

The Directors Cut is an awesome watch in HD, amazingly shot and scored and terrific action. It is basically a showreel of Michael Mann's style.

Im as big of a Mann fanboy as you'll ever find, but the trailers arent selling me on the film. Ill be seeing it opening week regardless, but its not really making me gravitate towards it.

Im still shaking my head at the CG Depp. Jesus H Christ, Johnny, can you not leap over a desk?

One of the bigger wtfs I've ever seen.

This movie doesn't seem to have a large buzz around it, but that may be because TF2:RotF is still steaming along. I hope it turnsout good, otherwise Bale is having a shit summer.:lol

As a huge fan of Mann's I back this 100%. I own it on HD DVD and it's a damn good motion picture. But I would say that if you didn't like Miami Vice then you probably won't like Public Enemies.

I am a huge fan of Mann's. Heat and Collateral are some of the best crime thrillers ever made IMHO.

Miami Vice is a failure on every level but cinematography. Very little connection with the characters, plot confusion rife through every thread, even the gun fight at the end isn't that great. They just stand in cover trading shots.

Yes Mann is known for his meandering and detailed personal back stories but they are usually just that, back stories. But in Miami Vice Farrells romance was a major central part of the plot getting huge screen time. On a basic level the movie's plot just didn't flow or was very compelling. It was confusing on every level. There is a reason the movie had a troubled filming, because likely became apparent the script just wasn't very good.

Great directors and writers sometimes lay big fucking eggs when their ambitions just don't come together. Miami Vice is Michael Mann's.

I sure as hell hope that isn't the case. Miami Vice was a turd, but I like some of his other stuff (namely Heat and The Insider).

I'm one of the few that likes Miami Vice. A lot of people said it was hard to follow but I never really thought so. The thing with it is that there is pretty much no exposition, which I liked. I also think that Mann was more interested in telling a story about the job rather than the characters involved which created problems with the "romance" side of it, but I didn't really mind. I'd put it above Collateral, but below Heat and the Insider.

Get to see it tomorrow night at 7:00 -- the first showing worldwide of the final cut after the premiere tonight. Be jealous, be very jealous. 8)

I hope that Depp, Mann or Bale show up and peak in or even better, say something. It's at the same theatre as the premiere (AMC River East).

I'm very fucking jealous. I'd imagine you at least get Mann in the theater somewhere to see the audience reaction.
