First Major Job Interview :(

My friend told me this. Be as nervous as you want before the interview. during the interview, you'll be so busy paying attention to their questions that you'd forget to be nervous. I've personally experienced this myself. When I was done, I was holy shit, I forgot to be nervous during the interview. I nailed it too.

I'm guessing it's for EY.

If you get the interview for an on-campus recruitment gig, then rest assure your resume is good enough. It is time to sell yourself to see if you would be a good fit in terms of working in teams and just sociable.

I am 100% sure the first interview will be "Tell me about yourself". Don't tell your life story, however make it seem that you are very active in school in other organizations aside from studying and leeway something about working in customer service/retail/hospitality industry if you've had those previous experience.

Once you get the office visit, it's almost 90% that you will get the internship.

Goodluck!

Good guess :)
And thanks! Im actually really nervous about that question still so I'll keep working on it.

They'll be talking most of the time actually for me, just don't make it boring. HR people wants to kill time too so just engage in conversation.

I just interviewed 6 people last week. Biggest pet peeve is people not listening to questions with intent and therefore not answering correctly and concisely. Comprehension is huge.

You can (usually) tell you've got the job when they actually talk to you instead of just reading the "what are your strengths/weaknesses" checklist without breaking from it

Oh.damn haha. I'll keep an eye out for this :)

Will do :) didn't think that was actually possible, especially if it was 1 one 1. Would you say asking them to clarify something is better then just answering what you think they are asking? They won't think im not paying attention or something?

I'll try my best!

I always show my genuine interest in the field and ask about opportunities for advancement; it's been working for me pretty well so far. Oh and make sure you get their business card and follow up!

dont want to hijack this thread, but i felt it would be similar because it's work/school related.

was in class today and was about to doze off, then the professor snaps his fingers at me to get my attention.

now, normally i wouldn't let this get to me, but I want to send an email stating:

professor,

this is the second time you snapped your fingers at me, and I resent that with all my heart and soul. This is my first and last warning, next time you do that they will not snap anymore.

Say that to his face. If he does it again bring pliers to your class.

YES ask them to clarify if you're not sure what they're asking. Do not "take a stab" at answering.

Interviews are way less about bullshitting than you might be led to believe. Be your professional self and you'll either be an honest fit or you won't.

youre right. i will. motherfucker doesn't know who he's disrespecting. i'm a fucking five star general son. god damn. snap his fingers at me? jesus christ. i will break those fucking fingers.

to OP. Good luck, you got this.

get enough sleep (ironic for me) and you should be fine.

Don't forget to say "I want this job" make eye contact. When I interview people I like to hear questions like:

What would the average day look like?

What doesn't work right now that I could work on?

Can you tell me a little bit about why you like working here?

How do you measure success in my role?

This is great advice.

Welp,

Just had it and I thought it went really well! Barely any questions and more of just talking which is nice. Just wanted to thank everyone that posted advice, you guys rock!

Its a trick. That's how they disarm you to make you feel comfortable. Before you know it you are chatting about your dildo collection D:

About to have a major job interview myself tomorrow. What's a good response to the question: Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

Lol yeah since the interviewer found out I spoke spanish we talked for a while so he could judge my fluency and the joke just kinda slipped out.
But seriously, just try and have a conversation. Don't treat it like a test, just talk with them if you get the chance ASK questions.

Tell me the joke!

Tell me the joke!

Lol it was less of a joke and more of a quip, but in English it basically translates to "so you're gonna make me work as hard as a black slave?" It's surprisingly less offensive in Spanish...at least I feel like it is hahaha, it's like common banter and you'll hear people of all ages use the phrase and people don't really take offense to it at all.

In context he was talking about all the responsibilities that the job entails and I just said "asi que van a trabajar me como un negro?" he burst out laughing, he could tell that I wasn't used to using spanish formally and we laughed about that.

Sorry for the hijack, but this thread is relevant rather than starting a new one. I have a question regarding "Tell me about yourself?"

Now this is a straightforward question and I know how to go about answering, but my question hinges on do I work in some of my strengths and a weakness or do I leave that part out and see if they ask it as a separate question.

This is for a short phone interview btw, which I assume is a precursor to the face-to-face.

Nice! I didn't see this thread early enough to offer any advice but you got some good advice from fellow posters, and it seems like all went well. Best of luck!

don't regurgitate your resume, they already have that in front of them. i treat "tell me about yourself" as a quasi-personal question. i give broad answers about my hobbies, family-life, as well as things like my preferred work environment (i like working collaboratively, etc). it's more of a "culture fit" question than your technical skills.

LOL. Honestly I don't get professors who do that. You're in college, whatever you do you should be responsible for. Professors really shouldn't care that you're dozing, it ain't high school.

There are a few basic rules to the interview:

1) Dress well. Overdress.
2) Shake hands firmly.
3) Be brief in your responses. Do not ramble.
4) Prepare a few anecdotes that show how dedicated/talented/persistent you are.
5) Prepare a few questions for the interviewer. Do not ask about time off, raises, vacation time, etc. That's for later.
6) Thank the interviewer for his or her time.
7) Follow up with the interviewer after the fact. Reiterate some part of the interview that shows you paid attention. This note should be short, but should remind the interviewer of your skill and interest.

Good luck.

Just wanted to post in this thread to thank everyone for the advice they posted. I had an interview for my dream job, and thanks to the tips in this thread I was just offered the job!

:D

Don't lie. A pathetic amount of people decide to lie in interviews, and it does nothing but mess things up.

And don't stress about the interview. It's just an interview. The more you freak out, research, or try to force yourself to relate to your interviewers the more you will fuck yourself over.

People do weird stuff under stress, just don't fuel yourself with preconceived notions and prepared speeches.

edit: I just realized this was for an interview that happened days ago. Whatever.

Got my first big job interview tomorrow. It's a BEX with the State Dept. Multiple choice test, one-on-one interview, 45min essay, then a panel interview.

Any advice GAF'ers? I'm looking at this as being a good way to gain interview experience, but damn, I really want this job.
