first reactions to the Xbox360 ?

Totally underwhelmed. Those PD0 shots that we are all bickering about just seem wrong. In fact comparing the internet shots to the short snippets that were shown on MTV it looks like those shots are WAY old as there is almost no resemblance between the 2. That said the video of PD0 from MTV looked underwhelming as well, just not as underwhelming. After seeing PD0 play I am skeptical about all the other videos shown simply because they were just videos. We have NO clue whether gameplay will look anything like that or if it was just video put together by the artists and programmers to give you an idea of what they are shooting for.

The cold hard fact is that as of now playable Xbox 360 games are underwhelming and PD0 being the greatest culprit. I will say that DoA4 is noticably next gen, but the benefits aren't that great. All I see are tons of depth of field, a few more objects being modeled, and all around higher res textures. I think there will be a few games which look much better, but that will be because of highly contrasting art styles. Pure technical prowess doesn't seem to do it anymore.

my first reaction was disapointment, not only in terms of the graphics on display, but the kind of games that have been shown. none of them really interest me. Too many FPS games, racing games, and sports games. where are the platformers? the adventure games? the rpg's? the stealth games? The strategy games? the launch games so far are like a compilation of all the generic crap that i never bought for my xbox... there are none of the special games like ninja gaiden, KOTOR, jade empire, psychonauts... they don't even have a halo game and clearly PD0 is not going to cut it as a replacement. They really need a stand out game, and another ghost recon sequel, no matter how pretty it is, is not going to cut it. A few of the japanese games look interesting, but i doubt any of them make it on time for launch.

elder scrolls oblivion (and the promise of a future ninja gaiden game) are the main reasons i'm still interested in the console. oblivions visuals are impressive and i trust bethesda to deliver a huge open ended game that i could play for years, so i'll be looking to hear more about that at e3. If it isn't a launch title i'll probably be waiting until it releases before i consider buying the console.

We also asked Chris Satchell, the General Manager of XNA at Microsoft if we could possibly connect a USB keyboard to the 360. He told us that, "we will allow you to plug in a USB keyboard. It's very useful for the text entry. What we're not enabling it for, we're not enabling it for gameplay." So the keyboard is a go for text entry, but a no-go for game control.

Fuck.

Wow, that's fucking horrible. Finally a way to shut up all the people whining about pad's for FPS games (self included) and they don't take it.
Why would they? To open up another can of worms that says KB + M users have an advantage? We'd just see a rekindling of bitching along the lines of LPBs vs. HPBs :lol

If you are better with K+M but you play with joypad for some stupid reason, you deserve to get drilled.

Also, it would be a very simple fix by putting Controller Only, Controller or K+M, K+M Only options in the match-making.

To not even give devs the option is short-sighted, though if their hand was ever forced, they could just release a little firmware upgrade. It's just easier to give devs tons of options and let them decide what is best for their individual titles.

The issue of not using a keyboard for play is not something new. I believe Microsoft had the same stance for Xbox 1. It's just that now the hardware is in place to make using the keyboard easy. True it sucks. I also think that the unfair nature of it was more important when the console had no native way to accept a keyboard. But now that the hardware readily accepts a keyboard, that unfair excuse holds a bit less water. I mean, who doesn't own an xbox, or future tense an X360, that won't be able to easily get ahold of a keyboard?

exactly. i dont want jump onto PDZ or Halo 3 and get owned by some keyboard user. Its not going to work, it'll split up the XBL community..

Stick to PC gaming, keep that quick ass, pin point controls off my damn Xbox.

so you prefer slow and sloppy controls to precision and speed? yep MS just made the decision between a new GFX card for my PC and the 360 pretty damn easy.

Its a stupid idea. Most people play console games in their living room. Why should they be at a disadvantage because they cant find a spot for a keyboard and mouse or dont want to hook that crap up every time they want to play.

Still. Assuming that it does give an advantage in certain games, it creates a delimma that really doesnt need to be created. Not only that, but it forces people to use it in order to be competitive. I look at it as game balance. In a fighting game I shouldnt have to use an overpowered character in order to be competitive if I'm skilled at the game. I shouldnt have to use 1 car and 1 car only in order to achieve the best time on a track. Etc.

Thats just the way I look at it.

wow the hate is strong here..

except pdz , almost all the games look fine. I can't fathom why people see pdz as the benchmark at all, when there have been tons of screenshots other games that look really great. And the hardware and tools are there, you should be blaming the developers (more like publishers) instead of microsoft if you don't like the content.

Then why didn't TN have full dev kits if MS is so much better at tools for developers?

That's no excuse. Have you by chance seen the first DOA3 videos running on an early Xbox kit early 2001 at TGS? Overall it looked just as good as the final game and was damn impressive.

Technically there's a lot of things going on in DOA4 apparentally but the thing is it doesn't need a lot of them to get the same wow factor. You could do DOA4 on inferior hardware, take out a lot of geometry there and most casuals wouldn't notice the difference. Again that's what Iwata was trying to get across a year ago but nobody paid attention, there's more to a console than visual wow factor, and it's gonna be more true now than ever. I don't expect PS3 and Rev to look that much better than X360, they'll look better but not that much, if you didn't quite notice the leap between Xbox and X360 you're unlikely to tell the difference between all the 3 next gen systems graphics.

I think the option for K + M to be used (wireless, preferably) with Xenon should be there, so games like RTS or some FPS games can be played on Xenon with no problems. However, developers should have the ability to support K+M or leave out support completely to ensure a level playing field.

Now this I agree with somewhat. I think MS would still have to enforce how it's enabled to keep the field level.

First Reactions:

The console and controller are beautiful.
NBA 2k6, Gears of War, Ghost Recon 3 are stunning.
Tony Hawk, PGR3, and NFS were good enough
PD0 and Madden sucked.

Did you guys see the videos for some of these games at IGN? They're like 10 seconds, but they show quite a bit.

People like yourself have been singing the praises of XBL specifically because its a robust, feature-filled online gaming service. Don't get stingy just because a potential new feature being discussed doesn't suit your particular play habits. As has been discussed, this kind of thing CAN be filtered, so if you would really prefer to play against people who are playing with gamepad only, you can.

Jeez, why does MS still give a shit about mouse & keyboard? The SmartJoy Frag is already out there, and now that they've got the tech down I seriously doubt it will take 3 years to make an X360 version.

Just make games support mouse + keyboard out-of-the-box.....people are going to be using them anyway.

Madden is far from sucking.

At this point Kaz Hirai would have to shit into his hand and throw it at the audience for PS3 to get a less favorable reaction than last night's debacle.

:lol :lol

funy cause its true. I think its safe to say that hyping up that MTV event + PDZ with their viral marketing campaign + Our Colony well and truly backfired for all the right reasons. I think its safe to say MS had final cut on that video which is why we got so much ass - I didn't care for the quickcut PDZ section nor the celebs playing games bit nor the Killers at the end. OR Elijah wood. The only good bits were the short clips at the top

THat said, MS lowered the bar substantially, Sony and Nintendo should be able to walk or skip over it.

Like the design of the system, but hated everything else. But that was probably due to the PISS-POOR MTV coverage. Fucking wankers. Sway giving the ghetto shake to Allard was fucking laughable.

im on board...after seeing the MW rpg scene...all i want is a FF-like game that isnt like FFX, all i wanted this whole gen. damn it, damn it.
and my faith has been restored after the test drive, pgr3, NNN shots/footage. fuck it, as expected not all the devs will be able to harness the power. no way, no how.

The console itself looks sleek, but stands out too much from my normal entertainment system.

The controllers and ideas brought to the 360 about wireless everything, are very appreciated and I love this as being the norm finally.

The media player potential will probably be less than what I can achieve on my current modded Xbox connected through a wireless set up already.

For me it's not a big surprise, 3rd part games interest me only very slightly as I simply dont have time to game. I'll be 35 this summer and honestly only 3 games really really drew me in this gen, and at times I've owned all 3 consoles.

For me it's about the PGR series, Halo series owns me, I'll buy whatever I have to to continue playing this series (even if I live to 70) and Ghost Recon series, but I have to say the dumbed down game that GR2 was really pissed me off, if I wanted utter single player shit like Socom I'd buy Socom. GR series ruled for me because of it's flexablity to use your teams in many different ways.

The games that could make me buy it before Halo 3 are SSX4, Burnout 4, PGR3, or GR3 if the PS3's release for the games being cross platformed aren't a huge improvement to wait for, or if the said games look disapointing.

That being said, the GR3 pics dont seem impresive to me at all, I have no idea what you guys see as being impresive in the pics, was there a movie preview that impressed or was it just the pics ?
