first reactions to the Xbox360 ?

Now how Sony is going to counter this and be the "Microsoft" at E3 and say "Wait" I really have no clue

Having the MTV special run continuously at their booth would be a start.

Wrong??? Dude i was here on these very boards posting about the game through the whole thing. I watched the life cycle of Halo like a freaking shark since my launch purchase hinged on it.

Are you being serious? PDZ was supposed to be the bomb but it looks like ass, and other games do show little improvements over the current gen aside of higher res. It has been a really, really crappy unveiling, almost like throwing a party for a funeral.

WOHOO, DAD IS DEAD!

Live Arcade from the dashboard (congrats Jesiatha)

Thanks! I'm not actually working on the launcher, but other guys in my group are. There are some cool games planned, and I *think* that the business guys are smarter about pricing now (I know that games on the original Arcade are now $10 - $15 instead of mostly $20).

... and other games are fucking unbelievable, exactly what people had wanted from next-gen.

The only problem with the unveiling was PDZ.

My First reaction:

W o W (not Warcraft)

Either way, I'm pretty amazed at the design, the capabilities and the prospect that the 360 is going to be giving the PS3 a run for it's money. The whole "built" in Wireless A/B/G is brillant and I commend MS for doing that.

I thought wireless networking wasnt built in? =\

The hardware is awesome. Wireless, hdd, downloading content, downloadable demos, expanding Xbox Live! That stuff is great. Getting me amped for the 360.

Then the DoA4 pics leaked. Which, btw, may or may not be indicative of the final product. They looked good, but not mind blowing. So my anticipation dropped. Then the second Xbox 360 game I really looked forward too crushed me. After all these years for waiting for Perfect Dark 0 this is what we get? Pathetic. I'm really, *really* hoping those multiplayer shots are not indicative of the single player. I still have a little faith yet that I will be wowed by DoA4 and PD0 at E3. Those are my two most wanted 360 games. I have a hard time getting excited for potential 2006 releases at the moment. I want to be wowed at launch.

Let's put this to a rest.

HDD: "built in" (removable)
WiFi: not built in (need to buy appropriate peripherial)

Just Gears of War. The rest is good but nothing mindblowing or even remotely close "next-gen good".

Gotham 3? NBA2k6?

For Sony's sake every single one of their games better be at least UE3 quality or the PS3 is in for some roughing up by these boards.

All Sony has to do is show pre-rendered / 'real-time' :lol , non-playable demos like MS just did and they'll be fine.

Don't get me wrong, I am actually with you on this statement but for such a powerful hardware with a good development enviroment things should be much better.

If you are referring to the ourcolony video, it was the "radio board for wireless controllers".

Well, based off what I saw -- and recall -- from the unveiling last night on MTV...

Tiger Woods '06 - No difference from current generation.
Need for Speed: MW - Oh my!
Madden - Lookin' good.
Kameo - No difference from how it looked on XBox 1
Perfect Dark Zero - Looks like an Xbox 1 game. (VERY disappointed)
Quake 4 - Looks like Doom 3, and Doom 3 looks awesome, so...

And the system itself... I still maintain that it's ugly as fuck.

There's nothing quite unbelievable in the lineup, in the same way other next-gen console unveilings showcased unbelievable stuff (graphically). I had the expectation that UE3/GoW would be kind of like a minimum standard, not the best by a reasonably far margin, especially since we'd already seen graphics of that quality on less powerful PCs via UE3 demos (with an engine designed to scale across a number of formats, not dedicated to one). It's unbelievable alright, but not in the way I hoped.

VictimOfGrief, MS will sell a WiFi adaptor, that's why they are calling the console WiFi Ready instead of the usual WiFi Enabled.

If you expected every game to look as good as UE3 at minimum that's more of a problem with your expectations than the Xbox360.

yeah heaven forbid we expect good graphics from a $300+ system MS is trying to shove down our throats.

oooo looky its wireless! :lol

Not every game, but most. PD0, Kameo? Sure, definitely. I certainly thought we'd see better, even if it was the exception (so maybe not minimum standard overall, but for the supposed "upper crust" of titles)

I'm bummed and a little angry. I feel like I supported the Xbox trying to bring attention to the innovations and responsiveness a new contender brought to the gaming market and I thought by launching early they were aiming for a broader evolution of their system and library and instead I feel like what their really interested in are better looking versions of what I essentially have now. That and finding ways to make customization a steady money stream through dumb shit like faceplates and buying Ecko shirts for my new soldier. I know it's a cynical feeling, but those are the things their marketing team decided were important that I know so I feel like I'm leaving a lot of the interpretation up to them.

I feel like the Japanese support will be limited but really good in spots which is essentially as it is now and that's a little dissapointing.

I feel like I'm being realistic in thinking that a lot of this is the stumblings of a new launch and there's likely to be far more positive impressions out of E3 and the months beyond launch.

I think that a lot of gaming is going to get more realistic looking, even more derivative and I might get bored off it a lot quicker than I thought a few months ago. I'm afraid that those parts are the aspects that all the companies will attempt to emulate the most in an attempt to capture the MTV market of gaming in the biggest market for entertainment in the world.

I'm thinking that I shouldn't watch anymore shows on gaming that feature hot bands and celebrities. Ever again.

I'm hoping that Nintendo really does want to be different than the other two companies and not just prove that they are just as cool to some guy from the 70's show. That's the biggest shift in my feeling.

I'm probably just overreacting to all the hype bullshit that exploded in my face in a half hour of commercials last night.

I thought we'd see better from PDZ too, but not UE3 better. I expected around HL2/Doom 3/Fear-level graphics for shooters which is what we got, more or less, with GR3, Condemned, and Quake 4. Gears of War is a tier above them all, PDZ a tier (or two) (or three) below. I certainly didn't expect any launch games to look even close to GoW.

First reaction = meh. Waiting for E3 to hopefully change that impression. The system is nice, but PD0 was the game that would've sold the system to me on day one. Unfortunately, it didn't do this yet.

Also, for Gears of War. Watching the video, you can see that there are actual movie sequences in there. Look at that big hulking monster. When it first appears, it looks way too good, but when it turns and starts to run at the player character, you can see that it changes into actual gameplay footage. It's noticeable...

What really worries me the most about the unveiling is just how incredibly poor MS's judgment was when they decided to show PD0. Not only did they show such a shoddy, unfinished game, but they actually made it the centerpiece of the entire unveiling. Considering that it was actually the worst looking game they showed (including the really terrible Activision and EA stuff). I wonder if MS really has any idea what they are doing to their image when they do something like that, which makes me worry that Sony will trample over them with ease.

I thought Tony Hawk looked about as bad.

So... what did your casual gamer friends think of the MTV special?

"That's next generation? Looks like a small jump up from what I have now. I'll stick with my Xbox."

I think MS learned from Sony that first impressions to the hardcore mean jack. Hopefully they didn't also learn that the only thing important is the hype train starting 2 months from launch, because y'know I like impressive E3 showings.

Casual gamers are not the ones who snap up 300 dollar consoles at launch. Besides, Sony had huge momentum + DVD playback to spur huge PS2 sales.

my impressions :

#1 : ugly system (no identity and generic design)
#2 : some really nice games
#3 : no surprising titles
#4 : waits for live details 'cause it seems to be really good this time
#5 : hype for Revolution ++

I said many times that I wasn't ready for next-gen yet. Not in '05 anyways and what I saw was pretty much meh in my opinion.

The Madden renders were pretty much what I was expecting for a lot of games and what I saw was games with larger maps, woooooh big deal.

Really can't wait to see what Sony and Nintendo have up their sleeve.

That whole sequence is realtime.

So far I'm not so impressed about XBox 360 right now, but like previous consoles it does have the potential to come out with better games later on as the system matures (that's if developer support and the market allows it to do so). Right now it kinda does look like 'XBox 1.5.'

But...

[fanboy]
If Itagaki and Team Ninja/Tecmo come out with another DOAXVB for 360 I'm sold lol =P (DOA4 is close though =)

The Xbox 360 is good.

FOR ME TO POOP ON!

That pretty much summarizes my opinion. Nearly everything about it is disappointing. The only game that stands out is 99 nights.

i've not seen PS3 , but because the XBox 360 is shitty, I BET ITS AMAZING!

i mean, it's the logical assumption is it not?
