first reactions to the Xbox360 ?

The next generation bar can't be set any lower, that is for sure.

I'm bummed and a little angry. I feel like I supported the Xbox trying to bring attention to the innovations and responsiveness a new contender brought to the gaming market and I thought by launching early they were aiming for a broader evolution of their system and library and instead I feel like what their really interested in are better looking versions of what I essentially have now. That and finding ways to make customization a steady money stream through dumb shit like faceplates and buying Ecko shirts for my new soldier. I know it's a cynical feeling, but those are the things their marketing team decided were important that I know so I feel like I'm leaving a lot of the interpretation up to them.

I feel like the Japanese support will be limited but really good in spots which is essentially as it is now and that's a little dissapointing.

I feel like I'm being realistic in thinking that a lot of this is the stumblings of a new launch and there's likely to be far more positive impressions out of E3 and the months beyond launch.

I think that a lot of gaming is going to get more realistic looking, even more derivative and I might get bored off it a lot quicker than I thought a few months ago. I'm afraid that those parts are the aspects that all the companies will attempt to emulate the most in an attempt to capture the MTV market of gaming in the biggest market for entertainment in the world.

I'm thinking that I shouldn't watch anymore shows on gaming that feature hot bands and celebrities. Ever again.

I'm hoping that Nintendo really does want to be different than the other two companies and not just prove that they are just as cool to some guy from the 70's show. That's the biggest shift in my feeling.

I'm probably just overreacting to all the hype bullshit that exploded in my face in a half hour of commercials last night.

I think you need a break buddy... seriously (check PM)

I'm psyched. I'm not going to fret about a few lackluster screens. It's new hardware and developers are going to struggle. The games will be there.... MS has already proven that.

The $375 million dollar first-party publisher that built their entire reputation on squeezing a lot out of hardware shouldn't be having trouble.

I'd tend to agree. There's no reason at all for the game to look so asstastic in those shots.

Unless its unfinished of course.

Was it wrong for me to expect a similar leap in performance this generation? Hell, was it wrong of me to expect even half as big a leap in performance this generation? 'Cause we don't even have that, by the looks of things. Granted, if everything shown was the standard of Gears of War or PGR3, I wouldn't be quite as disappointed, but given that they weren't even shown in-game, I'm really quite worried.

While I thoroughly enjoyed laughing my stoned ass off at the Perfect Dark Zero shots last night, I'm holding all judgements until I can see the three consoles side-by-side-by-side.

Well, E3 will at least give us PS3 vs. X360 stuff.

As a Sony fan, I am highly anticipating a sexy console design. Something that blows the doors off the PS2/PStwo/X360 designs. Like the PSP, the first reaction (before worrying about price and all that shit) is "I want it. I must have it."

It will be some degree stronger than the X360. I think all the different dev sources claiming so puts any arguement to that claim to rest. The combination of a drop-dead beautiful case and a slick XMB interface + real-time anything that looks great will win it for Sony. If MGS4 or RE5 real-time, or any other hot franchise, comes out with a spectacular showing, it will be a hell of a battle for MS. MGS4 trailer with the quality of the MGS2 E32k2 trailer would stop the show in its tracks. I would LOVE for that to happen, but am not expecting anything right now. I only have time for one console and over the last two generations, Sony has provided the goods. PS3 should be a worthy successor. That's my only presumption going into Monday's show.

Revolution? I'm very interested, but only because I have no idea what Nintendo has come up with. That could be spectacular, or disappointing. I'm hoping for the former.

Like I said, once we can all put X360, PS3 and REV next to each other, we'll be alot better off. If anything, it will be nice to end *speculation* and have real information to work off of.

e: MS has DEFINATELY left an opening for Sony to drop a bomb at their press conference. First impressions are a bitch, and you can never take it back.

The MTV show was a joke. Microsoft clearly thinks we're all idiots. To me, the MTV show was representative of Microsoft's entire concept of the next gen and the industry. All hype, all celebrities, no substance. They had better use E3 to their fullest if they are going to redeem themselves in my eyes.

PD0 what a joke.

Really? Microsoft's concept of the industry involves hype and celebrities? Wow.

*weeps for humanity*

My reactions: if what we've seen so far is indicitive of the 360's first-gen graphics, and nothing really original or interesting is shown or released at launch, even though my main system this gen was an Xbox I'm gonna say "fuck'em" and wait for PS3 or Revolution. Not only that, but I guess I just feel burned by MS in general from this generation, with all the hype over tons of games that either turned out underwhelming or canceled, and I worry about the same thing happening next gen.

What do you think the point of the MTV show was?

I don't know. As I understand it, Microsoft would like to cater to older gamers, 20+, but all the people I know that age are too smart (or cynical) to buy into shallow crap like the MTV show. Microsoft should be firing their marketing folks.

Excitement and hyped after watching ourcolony video. Dissappointment and "meh" feeling after MTV special and video and screenshots of actual games. As of now, unless another bomb is dropped at E3 I see no reason too jump on the Xbox 360 launch bandwagon.

The hardware is awesome. Wireless, hdd, downloading content, downloadable demos, expanding Xbox Live! That stuff is great. Getting me amped for the 360.

Then the DoA4 pics leaked. Which, btw, may or may not be indicative of the final product. They looked good, but not mind blowing. So my anticipation dropped. Then the second Xbox 360 game I really looked forward too crushed me. After all these years for waiting for Perfect Dark 0 this is what we get? Pathetic. I'm really, *really* hoping those multiplayer shots are not indicative of the single player. I still have a little faith yet that I will be wowed by DoA4 and PD0 at E3. Those are my two most wanted 360 games. I have a hard time getting excited for potential 2006 releases at the moment. I want to be wowed at launch.

IAWTP.

One addition: My disappointment isn't so much 360 but Rare and especially Team Ninja. Rare IS quite talented graphically. TN is world champion graphics wise, IMO. The character models of DOA4 look little improved from this current gen. I know early build. Didn't have full dev kit. Well Why didn't they? Why release sub par screens to show off TN's talents on a new system?

But the question remains. Are hype and celebrities MS' idea of a new generation, or the industry in general? You have to explain away that bit of nonsense first. From where I sit, MS' concept of gaming is a customizable global online community and better tools for developers.

At this point Kaz Hirai would have to shit into his hand and throw it at the audience for PS3 to get a less favorable reaction than last night's debacle.

They should have done something with ESPN before an NBA playoff game or American Idol on Fox.

Then why didn't TN have full dev kits if MS is so much better at tools for developers?

Well their big concept may be better tools for developers and a great online community, but if they wanted to show that they probably should have been a little bit more serious. This is a thread about impressions of the xbox360 based on the information we have, and my impression based on last night is very poor. My friends and I laughed throughout the entire presentation. It was absolutely pathetic. I do think they will have a more impressive showing at E3, but wow, did they ever start off on the wrong foot.

I am very interested to see what MS unveils at the actual press event on monday - not just the bs mtv event they showed on thursday

If the 360 is like PS2 this gen (unplayed except for a few key titles) that's fine with me.
I love my Xbox and a ton of its games (as my forum post history shows ;p) but if I get more mileage out of another Next Gen console, that's fine.

I'll get it for Halo 3, like I got PS2 for Metal Gear 2.

Multiconsole gaming ftw.

Disappointing. DOA4 looks nice as do Kameo, GR3 and PGR3. I'm taking Gears of War and the Japanese stuff with a pinch of salt at the moment since they look a bit too good to be true. PDZ is the only game that was playable at the MTV event and I feel sorry for Rare since no other developer has had the burden of making such a quick playable demo, perhaps on hardware a step or two behind those used to showcase other games.

The hardware looks nice, I love the s-controller so X360 pad seems sweet except for the use of AA rather than a li-ion pack battery (extra weight and size just to save a dollar or two). Outside the controller I'm not too bothered about the design but do have small worries over the pushing of media centre PC for connectivity (can regular XP PCs stream media?) and the size of the main unit (10% less than the original Xbox) disappoints despite the attempts to disguise its size with a concave and white design. Also, not enamoured by the gimmicky face plates, its as if Microsoft wanted to copy Apple then decided they needed more peripherals so would add some Nokia-style touches.

The crux of my disappointment is the lack of must-have exclusive launch games so far. Kameo perhaps, PGR3 is unlikely since I'm not a fan of the series ditto for DOA4. Its the same old EA, Activision, Ubi ports tarted up otherwise and they, unfortunately, look quite a bit better than the original IP from Sega America, Namco Hometek, Midway and THQ. It is still pre-E3 but there needs to be a big step-up in exclusives built for the system, a next-gen system. We haven't seen anything from Japan outside the 1st party and close knit Xbox supporters yet so hopefully Amusement Vision, AM2, KCET, Capcom and others will be showcasing at E3.

I cant wait to see what sony will show with ps3. They wont make the mistake microsoft did and unleash the ugliest game on the public first. They dont have nearly the same ammount of haters either. There is no question the x360 hardware is awesome, it boggles my mind why they decided to show off certian games.

Yeah. I guess they wanted to have something playable and just went with whatever.
But as bad as PD0 looks in the EGM screens, it didnt look nearly as bad in motion. Still not what I expected tho.

the mtv prgram did its job?

did you go out and poll people to figure this out or are you just assuming the general public doesnt know what an xbox game looks like?

My PS2 turned out like that too... it has collected the most dust of all the 3 current consoles. :P

I know better than to doubt MS again so even though PDO (which I never cared about to be honest) looked like shit, I know better than to think MS will fail. Btw, if it weren't for PDO people wouldn't be bitching so much. Sure, there was criticism of the DOA shots but PDO really fucked things over for the other games. It's amazing how one game has made people troll the entire line up.

The 360 won't fail. And the trolling is because of way more than just one game. It's just that, that one game was very highly anticipated.

The only thing that would sell me on it right now would be if MS bundles native kb/mouse support right out of the box, and asks the appropriate devs to take advantage of it. How many (if any) USB ports does this thing have?

we would've gotten that if Microsoft haven't jumped on the gaming market and ruined it...

next gen should launch atleast in the end of 2006-beggining of 2007

In the gamespot article on the X360, Microsoft clearly states that a USB keyboard will be usable for text and the like, but they will not allow them to be used for gameplay.

We allready are getting that. People just choose to ignore it so they can continue to hate.

uh no, when i see playable 30+ fps versions of Gears of War, Ghost Recon 3, etc then Xbox 360 will be looking better. Right now all I see is one playable game, PD0 and it looks like shit.

I think people need a reality check. PS3 is coming 6 months after x360. If you dont see the generational leap now you wont see it then either.

we'll see man... it's actually coming out a year after xbox 360 in the U.S...

1 year more dev time + a more powerful system I think you'll be quite surprised what Sony has in their bag of tricks.

Do you realize that using standard rechargeable batteries will be cheaper for you? Why would it be better if MS used a proprietary battery pack?

Why does connecting your 360 and PC together bother you? I can only see positives... stream movies and music, view photos, transfer games saves, etc. And yes you can do this on all flavors of XP. (but you must have WinXP... 98, NT, 2000 won't work)

cja said:

I thought the official spec said 70% smaller than Xbox... or roughly the same size as PS2.

Faceplates are big in the cell phone business. No one is forcing you to change the look of your 360. Once again, I can't see how having more options for consumers is a bad thing.

My thoughts so far have been "cautious" to say the least...

I love the look of the system and controller...

The hardware specs mean nothing to me... I need to see the games in action.

The videos I have seen so far... only Full Auto by Sega and NBA2K6 got me excited...

Kameo does not for me and looks like an X-Box game... Tony Hawk is pure crap and looks PS2 or X-Box.

I have to say, I will be waiting until very close to launch for my decision... I bought Dreamcast and X-Box on Day 1... I am sure I will do the same for this system, but so far it has not blown me away.

Maybe E3 will open another door and show more in-game action for better looking games...

Umm. So when is it launching in Japan? Are you expecting different specs for different regions?

That's bullshit. So if a dev wanted to allow mouse/keyboard support for, say, a FPS game, MS wouldn't allow them to? I was really excited when they announced standard USB ports in this thing but this is a bit of a bummer. :\

From Gamespot: Gamespot X360 Article

We also asked Chris Satchell, the General Manager of XNA at Microsoft if we could possibly connect a USB keyboard to the 360. He told us that, "we will allow you to plug in a USB keyboard. It's very useful for the text entry. What we're not enabling it for, we're not enabling it for gameplay." So the keyboard is a go for text entry, but a no-go for game control.
