First round of Yakuza 0 Previews (Spoiler: They are glowing)

I wish they would update all the games for PS4 so a new user could get a proper introduction.

The problem with getting into the PS2 games was that at the time there was lots of talk about Yakuza not coming to the west, and some where voice overed while others where not.

They also made a samurai feudal japan Yakuza. Is that one good too?

Bought 2 copies (1 for me, 1 for a pal), bringing a 3rd to a Virtua Fighter tournament next month (SEGA sent it to me to give out as a prize!)

Two actually.

Kenzan and Ishin.

Never been localized but both are good.

So Playing the Yakuza games on Ps4 in their order of release is okay if one never had contact with the series before? You guys really get me hyped for this

You'll be fine for the next two games. If you really like the series, the best game (2) is stuck on the PS2 and 3,4 and 5 are stuck on the PS3. 4 is really good too.

Mostly, yes.

After playing Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami you should be able to jump into any entry you want with little problem. Yakuza 6 does rely on Y5 a little bit but the overall impression is that you can still play and understand the story without feeling lost.

Does this game have a 1-5 recap like the other games had? I don't need to catch up on the story, but I figure that could help people slide into characters and events easier

5 did not have recaps for some reason.

This game takes place before every other mainline title, you don't need to know what will happen to these characters later.

It's a prequel so it really doesn't need one. Y6 supposedly has recaps which is good.

20 hous in, chapter 5.
The game is a blast to play, and it's already one of my favorite Yakuza. Really polished and refined in all the parts. And a lot of the old minigames now are much more fun.

Ah and the money/xp system is brilliant!

P.s.
Mr Shakedown is an asshole

I never played a Yakuza game before. This a good place to start?

Any of them is a good place. This is a prequel so you'll be fine. I started on 3 and they had a catch up mode to help you with the characters and major events from all the previous games.

Ishin is incredible. While it will probably never be localized, there is a full translated guide online...

I highly recommend playing it. Of course after diving into Zero.

There's also Kenzan, the first samurai spin off, which is on PS3 and is great too.

This may actually happen! The series' Director has stated an interest to do just this, and rumour has it their next game is a Yakuza 2 Remake using the incredible Yakuza 6 engine. To speculate, one could imagine a bundled HD (not remade) 3/4/5 collection for PS4 to follow.

And yes, the samurai games are incredible. Use KKH subs or watch Salty Yen's YouTube / Twitch translation videos to get full enjoyment out of them!

So this is set in the 80s? Bubble Japan? What are the cars like? Are there tekkamen skylines and Celica Supras driving around? Can you even drive your own car, or is it just taxis again? I swear, if the Yakuza games cared about cars I think it would be the best series ever.

Also what's the soundtrack like other than just good? What type of music? Western 80s throwback games are all about the synthesis, what about here?

You are playing the wrong series if you want drivable vehicles. Save the taxi / snowmobile mini-games in Y5, there is practically zero driving in any of them. So of course, you will be greatly letdown by Yakuza Zero and their generic cars feautured in cutscenes only: no discernible models or brands that I can remember.

I do agree, having played everything up to and including Y6 that there could be a better focus on vehicles. I'm honestly surprised we haven't had a Dekotora or drifting mini-game yet.

Y0 OST is standard Yakuza fare and doesn't heavily feature synths or overt 80's style.

I think you are confusing this series with GTA, and specifically Vice City in this case haha.

You can play Space Harrier and Outrun in Club Sega.

And you can unlock
Phantasy Zone
and
Super Hang-On

I managed to finish Kenzan, mostly because the cutscenes on youtube were translated so I could enjoy the story, however I can't see anything similar done with Ishin :/

Yes. This game takes place before Yakuza 1. Also, there is a Yakuza 1 remake incoming this summer.

I'm so excited they are brining all the remakes to the west.....I've always wanted to start yakuza and 0 will be my first foray into the series. it looks like a fun mix of seriousness and really funny touches of comedy thrown about.

I spoiled myself with a video showing me 5's inspirations and was dying of laughter

Is there any reason why most of these previews are from relatively unknown sites? I found a couple more, but never heard of these sites.

In a lot of ways, Yakuza 0 reminds me of Shenmue, and as a long-time lover of the Dreamcast that makes me happy.

http://www.mmorpg.com/columns/yakuza-0-is-like-a-walk-down-memory-lane-on-the-ps4-1000011470

Yakuza 0 is no exception game that attempts to blend over the top action with some gritty, and often uncomfortable, drama. Inferences and threats made to characters can and do approach some difficult territory – torture, mutilation and sexual violence are brought up, and some people may be understandably turned off from the game because of these, as well as some of the ways women are portrayed.

Major sites probably need some kind of compensation for 'promoting' such a niche title. They'll always be first to jump on big hitters but smaller games, especially niche af japanese ones they don't care about, even though they have review copies.

btw. I cracked and downloaded Yakuza 6 demo and boy oh boy, I love the combat system, the animations are much better. I'm gonna go and try do all the heat moves tomorrow. :P

You cant do this to me man i already got GR2, 2.8 and Nioh

Bro! You can do it, you can finish Yakuza 0 before Nioh comes out three weeks later.

Yakuza 0,1,6 are all coming out here and is a great series to get into.

I can't believe they are releasing this on the same day as multiple popular games.. Resident Evil 7 being one of them.

Why Sega choose times like this to release their games i dont know.

It has no chance.

It's a fucking awesome series so i've already preordered though.

Entire first half of 2017 is crazy crowded. There isn't a 2 week gap anywhere. If Yakuza 0 doesn't release now, it'd be up against Nioh and Horizon Zero Dawn in Feb, Nier and Ghost Recon in March?, Persona 5 in April...

At least RE7 is a horror game and has its own audience.

2nded. Ishin is one of my favorites.

I just ordered Ishin last night, but it will take a while to get here. I've held off on playing my copy of Kenzan, because of the language barrier and having to play it with a guide, but guess I'll just bite the bullet and start!

You know what, screw it - day one.

Don't fight the urge! Its a great comfort food game! Take your frustration out on some bad guys in Kamurocho.

Yakuza 0 in January.

Yakuza: Kiwami in summer of this year.

Yakuza 6 early next year.

Year of the Dragon!

Can someone explain to me Yakuza as a franchise? I see a lot of people are excited for this. I've never play a single Yakuza game before, know nothing about it. Is it similar to Sleeping Dogs?

I've been playing them all faithfully since 3 and feel slightly burned out on the series. The combat, mini games and Kamurocho... I've seen them too many times perhaps. To the people already playing: does Yakuza 0 feel fresh somehow? Considering waiting all the way to Yakuza 6 instead, but I want you guys to convince me for 0.

I made this thread for people new to the series but haven't played it before.

Yakuza 0 Thread - http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1329069

The Yakuza series is not the same as Sleeping Dogs though they both have fighting mechanics and that's probably where the similarities end.

In Yakuza you're on foot for the entire game, so the area available is smaller, denser and has more detail. The area is a direct recreation of Kabuki-cho the red light district in Tokyo so there's lots of bars, shops, massage parlours, video game arcades, restaurants. You can't go in every shop, but there is enough variety there. The game is mostly focused on a crime story, then outside of cutscenes you go beat up bad guys or do side quests and or mini games. There are LOTS of mini games like video game arcades, batting cage, bowling, darts, mahjong, dating hostess girls, managing a hostess club, karaoke etc.

For me, there are enough changes to each game that has made every game feel fresh so far. I honestly think its a matter of perspective. If you go in expecting a brand new city, new characters, new mechanics, new mini games for each one then yes these games are going to look iterative. "Kamurocho again!" It's not meant to be like an Uncharted or GTA or other games where all the assets are new.

However I think their iterative approach really works. Every game has a new story, the characters are familiar and haven't outstayed their welcome (so far), there's generally a new area to explore, Yakuza 5 had 4 new areas. Yakuza 0 has a new area (sort of) Sotenbori which has been used in Yakuza 2 and 5. Kamurocho is always improved. New mini games are added to the base list of games. And everytime the series has moved on to the latest platform, the graphics improve. We'll be going from 720p/30fps to 1080p/60fps in Yakuza 0. Yakuza 6 will be PS4 only rather than cross gen, which means even more detail (though its only meant to be 900p I believe).

They did, but currently it's on hold just after few cutscenes.

Watch Salty Yen's videos. I've played along with them for four games now (Ishin, Zero, Kiwami, 6). He's heaps of fun to watch, and resynching game and video takes seconds on your phone.

I really loved this song from the demo

Also it samples Funk Goes On from the original game which is really cool (you have to listen for it to actually notice it)
