Can someone explain to me Yakuza as a franchise? I see a lot of people are excited for this. I've never play a single Yakuza game before, know nothing about it. Is it similar to Sleeping Dogs?
I made this thread for people new to the series but haven't played it before.

The Yakuza series is not the same as Sleeping Dogs though they both have fighting mechanics and that's probably where the similarities end.
In Yakuza you're on foot for the entire game, so the area available is smaller, denser and has more detail. The area is a direct recreation of Kabuki-cho the red light district in Tokyo so there's lots of bars, shops, massage parlours, video game arcades, restaurants. You can't go in every shop, but there is enough variety there. The game is mostly focused on a crime story, then outside of cutscenes you go beat up bad guys or do side quests and or mini games. There are LOTS of mini games like video game arcades, batting cage, bowling, darts, mahjong, dating hostess girls, managing a hostess club, karaoke etc.
I've been playing them all faithfully since 3 and feel slightly burned out on the series. The combat, mini games and Kamurocho... I've seen them too many times perhaps. To the people already playing: does Yakuza 0 feel fresh somehow? Considering waiting all the way to Yakuza 6 instead, but I want you guys to convince me for 0.
For me, there are enough changes to each game that has made every game feel fresh so far. I honestly think its a matter of perspective. If you go in expecting a brand new city, new characters, new mechanics, new mini games for each one then yes these games are going to look iterative. "Kamurocho again!" It's not meant to be like an Uncharted or GTA or other games where all the assets are new.
However I think their iterative approach really works. Every game has a new story, the characters are familiar and haven't outstayed their welcome (so far), there's generally a new area to explore, Yakuza 5 had 4 new areas. Yakuza 0 has a new area (sort of) Sotenbori which has been used in Yakuza 2 and 5. Kamurocho is always improved. New mini games are added to the base list of games. And everytime the series has moved on to the latest platform, the graphics improve. We'll be going from 720p/30fps to 1080p/60fps in Yakuza 0. Yakuza 6 will be PS4 only rather than cross gen, which means even more detail (though its only meant to be 900p I believe).
