Kinda think your true colors shown through there...lol I have high doubts you even saw the movie. So I guess Iron Man has fan boys.

Keep your fan boy trash in the Gaming Forum. THe movie was shit and you know it.

Well apparently I disagree. I just saw it a second time. I love it, the Wachowski's brought Speed to the screen way above my expectations. I hope they do an awesome Blu Ray.

Just got back, I enjoyed it. Fun movie, eye-popping, pace was good and I like how they interwove backstory with events in the present. No complaints about the story and I thought they played the massive corporation vs. independent angle well.

First things first, this post will mention Iron Man, if you dont like it stop reading now.

I just saw the movie a few minutes ago and i thought it was ok or possibly good. I wont go into details because everything has already been mentioned.

The real problem is that a persons review can be heavily influenced by how they go and see the movie. I went to see speed racer alone, i drank too much soda and really had to go to the washroom during the last quarter but even then i still think the movie was ok. Although probably the highlight of the whole thing is me writing this post.

While watching iron man was probably one of the best ways i spent my time these past two weeks. Me and my friend had a great meal at Wimpy's, skipped out on the junky theater food, caught the earliest screening on friday and chatted about the movie during the end credits. So i think my opinion on the movie is heavily influenced just by how much i enjoyed my self that day.

Either way i cant wait to see the next offering from the Wachowski brothers.

No I know it was awful. It was actually unexpectedly boring to boot. The entire movie felt like it should have been 45 minutes long and not over 2 hours. Almost all of the character development was bad, though the introduction of Trixie was nice - as was the actress. The whole corporations are evil thing was long, drawn out, cliche, and REALLY stupid. THe whole attempt to use the 43rd grand prix to draw it all together was just tired.

When I compared this movie to Stealth and said it was worse its because unlike Stealth, the movie was mostly dull and pointless - not to mention the double race at the end of the movie clearly shows an awful tact for writing and pacing. The first half of the movie was sooooooooo boring and then they tried at the end to FINALLY build some emotion in it.

And since after all this time the movie sits at 35%, it seems most critics agree.

I think you've made your point. Will you leave the thread now?

I can't believe the mods are even letting shit like this:

The emotion was there all the time, from the very beginning when they set up the relationship Speed had with Rex and the tragedy the Racer family had to endure. I could understand feeling that the first half moved slowly, but in no way I was bored with it...the exposition moments were nicely-handled and intercutted with action sequences, so the pacing of the film never felt dull or contrived. After that, the second half kicks off and leaves everything in the dust...it is, incredible.

I'm amazed at how much our thoughts differ on this one, but I guess that happens with every art piece, even with the great ones.

Saw it in IMAX - and in all honesty thought it was amazing. I can't believe how well the Wachowskis recreated anime into live action and put so much substance into the world of Speed Racer.

How could anyone not enjoy this movie?

Why because I have a dissenting viewpoint and replied to a post? No. You go.

No, because you've repeated the same thing several times and all you're trying to do is argue while everyone else is having a civilized discussion. Jesus. Get a grip on yourself. Find something more constructive to do with your time.

With such a harsh reaction to the movie, I'm kinda curious what exactly Phoenix expected to get out of seeing it. I haven't read the whole thread - was he dragged to the movie against his will? I'd hope so, because I think it'd pretty easy to tell from the trailers if the movie was this diametrically opposite of one's tastes.

Whoa, did Speed run over Phoenix's dog? :lol

I don't know how GAF turned this thread into an Iron Man/Speed Racer competition. There really isn't much to compare between the two, and there's nothing preventing anybody from enjyoing both of them (I know I did)

There is. Both are movie conversions of story/character native to another medium.

I saw this and loved it.

About 10-15 minutes in, it hit me: this movie is this decade's Dick Tracy.

Anyway, it was faithful to spirit of the show, adding a bit of camp, and a lot of crazy visuals. Amazing eye candy.

Loved the Racer X stuff.

should we compare them to Forrest Gump as well?

The source material for each is an entirely different medium with an entirely different target audience in mind. Of cousre Iron Man isn't going to have a kid with a pet monkey in the trunk of his Audi R8. I'm wondering how so many people on this board managed to stumble into the theater a week later hoping for Iron Man 2. Perhaps they had never heard of Speed Racer, never seen the trailers, never watched an anime from the 60s, missed the PG rating?

Go to this movie expecting a heavy dose of heart and cheese, because that's what makes it great. Really, the most apt comparison I've seen in this thread is Willy Wonka. I could see Speed hitting the same cult status, since the box office sales look like they'll kill any similar style movie for the next decade

Most movies are. Comparing them based on that is kinda weak.

I forgot to bring up that they are both animated/hand drawn converted to live action and all that...basically, there is at least some valid points people can have when comparing them. I am just trying to help justify this for others because im bored, I honestly don't care too much about it.

This movie was amazing, to hell with the haters. Captured the feeling of the show and added an absolute eyeball orgasm. It's a bit slow to get going, but it also delivers everything you want from the story; there's no slight drop at the end, it's satisfying in a way that most movies now are not, as it's no attempt to launch a franchise.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow was given the cold shoulder as well :(

Just saw Speed Racer and I recommend the movie 120% if you want a light-heart affair involving stylization, non linear introductions, great soundtrack, and fun cast. The movie reveals as much as you are needed and it is a wonderful children's flick. I just cannot stand the negative buzz. What shocks me that Iron Man was sold out, in the later shows, even though it is in it's third week.

Surprisingly, for the PG rating, it is violent with all of that shooting
and Rain's character bloody lip. At least the hereos did not kill the villains and were above the evil dooers.

I just cannot wait to have it on Bluray.

The only upsetting thing about the evening to see Speed Racer is the Clone Wars CG movie, is this going to be this generation's Ewoks adventure? I thought the Clone Wars CG would be a prime time cable tv series and not a full blown movie.

Speed Racer is kind of like laying on your back while someone pours skittles all over your face for nearly two and a half hours. But in a good way.

This made me LOL.

The hate is pretty strong here, but for whatever reason it doesn't bug me. I didn't expect this movie to do well, or have a lot of fans. But I enjoyed the hell out of it. It really is for 8 year old boys, and those in touch with their inner 8 year boys. I was probably about that age when I first saw the cartoon, and it made a huge impression. I hope this movie does the same for a new generation of little kids.

Probably a better movie to compare Speed Racer to is Transformers. Dumb as heck, but worth it for people who have any positive feelings about the original. Which, to me, meant Transformers sucked the big one. I can see why somebody with no attachment to the original series might not care for Speed Racer upon seeing it for the first time as an adult.

Oh, and for the fans...

Come on. Everybody should have the right to say that a movie is shit. Don't take things so seriously. It's not like this is an appreciation thread. It's a thread about reviews. Not that their opinions are absolute or anything, but the reviews do agree with him.

Thinking it really should've been PG-13. The cooties stuff, and constant little fat kid comic relief really wore on me over the two and a half hours. It was also a little tedious up until the rally began.

Visually pretty interesting, though it was edited so aggressively with shifts between the race, the drivers' facial expressions, the crowd reaction, the commentators, the evil corporate scowls, etc. etc. at such a high pace that it tended to lose cohesion.

Mildly entertaining with a well done climax (stupid fat kid interjection aside). Really liked that final lap.

This is certainly a love/hate film. I saw it tonight on IMAX and absolutely loved it.

To be frank, I'm quite shocked I enjoyed the film as much as I did. I had seen the original cartoon a few times, but never thought much of it. Two weeks ago I had no desire to see the film, but when Giacchino's score popped up online it was so good that I gained interest. I'm really glad I decided to go see this. It's certainly not for everyone, but for me it just clicked.

BTW, did anyone else notice the random image of Edward G. Robinson near the driver of the semi in the first Racer X scene? Absolutely bizarre.

Also, this commercial needs to start airing on television again asap ...

Saw it tonight and I loved it. Couldn't have had a better time. The beginning for me was the only real moment where I went "man this could go either way", after that I was hooked. I wish there were a game that captured the feel of the racing seen in the movie. I know there's one coming out for Wii or something. I'm curious if that's worth checking out.

hi again

iron man vs speed racer FIGHT

saw 'em both, equal expectations; speed racer was miles more fun, iron man was deeper

both stuck to their source material so if anyone didn't like it then i don't know what to tell you other than how could you have not seen it coming?

i'll prolly see speed racer again and pick it up on blu-ray down the road, if only because i can' t get enough of its kaleidescope of special effects and editing tricks. anything else is icing on the cake

Yeah, I feel the same. Tbh I was more then sceptical about the whole project and thought it would add just more fuel to my Wachowski hate. Now that I've seen it - Wow, gotta bite my tounge, this is actually something fresh! Not a perfect movie by any means, but yeah, shitload of fun. Funny thing about the whole "trippy cg" environment - rather then feeling completely fake it somehow brakes the over the top "fakeness" and emerges inside so the wole thing feels right for the viewer. I didn't feel that from the trailers.

This is a good movie that somewhat erased the bad memories of shitty Matrix sequels for me.

Can't fucking wait for Ninja Assassin btw

So is this a Speed Racer love thread?

I haven't seen it yet, and I look forward to seeing it, as there are a lot of elements I've seen in the trailers that I find appealing.

But we can't ignore the 35% RT score thus far...and usually shit movies have that sort of score.

Glad to hear people liked it...I think I'll like it for the same reasons these people liked it. But you can't say the Pheonix is trolling when he listed some pretty good reasons not to like the movie.

Someone mentioned BluRay release, I think it could look awesome in HD. Even if I don't really like the movie a whole bunch, I can see myself getting the BR.

I saw it, I enjoyed it. Fun cute movie. Better than I was expecting after the reviews. There was like only 10 people in the theater though for the imax, kinda creepy.

I really don't understand why so many critics just flat out hated the movie. I really don't. I mean I can understand it not getting great reviews, but to be almost universally panned is amazing to me. I and many others in this thread absolutely loved the movie. I cannot remember another movie were I thought the Rotten tomatoes score was so way off.

Heh, that's the only exposure I've ever had to Speed Racer, so I'm still debating whether or not to go see this tonight. Is there a lot of dumb humor? I've got a pretty low tollerance for that sort of thing.

There are a few nods to the underage as far humor goes, but nothing overblown. I laughed at some of it myself, took it as cute. Spridle easily could have become annoying, but in the end I thought it was the right amount.
Spridle ODing on candy and racing through the CG Royalton factory
was as outrageous as it got, and how CG and over the top it was reminded me of when some Anime just completely goes bonkers and changes the art style to exaggerate the moment.

Why can't you understand that most people just hate the subject matter and execution. Cars "racing" by spinning against each other? An annoying kid and a monkey? A way overlong runtime? Total abuse of visual senses? An in your face super childish moral tale? Based on the trailer alone I was expecting it to be universally panned. No surprise at all.

Even as someone who LIKED the movie I can see that RT isn't wrong technically. I mean the fact that the movie will go down as one of the summers biggest bombs has to mean that they were feeling the same thing most people felt based off the trailers.

Whew, I was afaid this page of the thread would be without an "I called it!" Duckroll posting.

Maybe it's the earling morning feelings, but were you making fun of RDJ?

Im saying that if GAF stopped slobbering on their respective knobs for 5 seconds, they would realize that neither has the flawless career that they are made out to have. Which is fine. While Bale still remains a bit overrated in my eyes, and Downey is amongst my favorite actors, both are fantastic talents who obviously have taken some roles along the way simply the pay the bills.
