Official synopsis:
Michael Stone, husband, father and respected author of “How May I Help You Help Them?” is a man crippled by the mundanity of his life. On a business trip to Cincinnati, where he’s scheduled to speak at a convention of customer service professionals, he checks into the Fregoli Hotel. There, he is amazed to discover a possible escape from his desperation in the form of an unassuming Akron baked goods sales rep, Lisa, who may or may not be the love of his life. A beautifully tender and absurdly humorous dreamscape, from the brilliant minds of Charlie Kaufman (SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK) and Duke Johnson (“Community” episode, Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas), this stop-motion animation wonder features the vocal cast of Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tom Noonan and David Thewlis and a stirring strings-based score by Carter Burwell.

Didn't click on trailer, the stupid amount of critical hosannas rained down on it from every direction already peaked my interest. Being picked up by Paramount means we may even get to see it in wider release come January.

Boy that animation style looks amazing. I'd heard great things, but man it's looking slick.

Synecdoche, New York is my favorite movie, and I'm stoked that Charlie Kaufman gets to keep making stuff.

Trailer doesn't really give much away - it's mostly about the emotional music w/ some nondescript lines of dialogue and critic quotes.

Looks great.

Love a bit of Kauffman. Synecdoche, New York absolutely slayed me. Felt like I was hit by a car for a week after.

"I think you're extraordinary."

"Why?"

"I don't know yet, but it's obvious you are."

Fuck me if I couldn't have said this not even two days ago to somebody goddammit

Saw the film at a festival and it is amazing. The trailer is great too but I'd suggest just seeing the movie when it's released.

disappointed that as a backer I didn't get to see it sooner, but I was able to see it as a part of the chicago international film festival a couple weeks ago and it's even better than the trailer.

seriously so pumped to be able to see it again.

I am so psyched about this movie. Kaufman plus Starburns Industries, seems like a most awesome thing ever conceived.

This movie is great. Probably has the most realistic sex scene in an American film in decades.

Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson actually talked about this at the live Q&A that I attended, and they mentioned that it was one of the most technical scenes in the entire movie. I think they mentioned that there were 20 rigs which all controlled different parts of the bed and bodies?

the person who animated the scene would get about 9 shots per day which would amount to less than half a second. iirc the scene is around or more than 2 minutes long too

That's incredible. So filming that one scene took roughly 4 months?

I would never have the dedication for that. o_O

I believe so and had I known that before seeing it I would have been even more into the scene than I already was. charlie said they really tried to make it as realistic and non-comical (in terms of jankiness) as possible even though there is a bit of intentional humor in it. then of course some of the shots that were taken weren't usable and had to be thrown in the trash which can be typical for movies of this style.

Looks amazing !

But for those who saw it ... Do you think it would not have worked with actors ?
Don't look to need a even single special effects scene if was with actors

It could have been done with actors, but the central theme of the movie wouldn't be as well served, or even undermined if they didn't use realistic puppets. I don't think it would have worked as well.

But yeah, saw this a couple of weeks ago, Kaufman did it again, it's a technical masterpiece.

Looks weird but Charlie Kaufman hasn't disappointed yet.
Yeah.

Im a little confused. The way the pitch is worded makes it sound like this was project by a bunch of people not affiliated with Charlie. Like, he wrote a play, and they somehow got the license to it and wanted to make it a movie. Yet this is credited as Charlie co-directing it and shit.

So reviews are incredible for this movie. Heard it has one of the best scenes of the year. Comes out late this month and it's a Kaufman movie.

Gonna bump the thread just to remind people it exists. He's one of the very best writers.

I saw it as well. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but found the last 20 minutes a little lackluster.

If I were to rank the Kaufman films I've seen:

1. Synecdoche, New York
2. Eternal Sunshine
3. Adaptation
4. Anomalisa
5. Being John Malkovich

Damn, how I have I never heard of this before? I love stop motion and definitely want to support more of it.

I saw it last night at a Screening in Toronto. The general audience didn't seem to get it at all, it was infuriating.

They seemed to go into it thinking it was a comedy on the same level as Fantastic Mr. Fox, or maybe even Team America World Police. They were laughing at nearly everything, loudly.

It was absurd. I was trying to enjoy it as the emotional drama that it was, and everyone is laughing away. The humour is subtle, and there's callback humour as well - but nothing that's going to be a god damn knee slapper.

I was so confused by the audiences reaction. The lady behind me didn't know what the movie was about (which she said audibly before it started), and then at the end said "I don't even know what I just watched."

My opinion - really enjoyed it, minus the audience.

I guess we never got an OT or spoiler thread but I just got back from a screening and I don't know where else to dump discussion of this film.

The surrealism I'm expecting is much more subtle here, and it's all about how weird it is to spend time in a hotel and how isolating it can feel. The dream sequence is the only visually recognizable weirdness and everything else is intentionally mundane and human, minus the weird talking sex doll.

I have to wonder about Michael though.
Is he a psychopath? You learn of his past transgressions and how suddenly he broke it off with Bella after what was very obviously an intense if brief romance, so you get enough foreshadowing between everyone having the same voices and the parallels between Lisa and Bella before Michael starts seeing things in the mirror and before his meltdown at his speech. But is he actually a psychopath? He complains that he can't cry, that he's lost his ability to love and when it comes down to it he immediately drops his infatuation once he's scored. It's like he can't continue with any human relationship once the intial excitement is gone for him.

Great film, even if I feel a little dim at not seeing the twist sooner.

looks depressing as hell

It was but it had a lot of funny scenes too. Anomalisa was very well done, even the choice for making this stop-motion makes sense plot-wise.
Jennifer Jason Leigh absolutely killed it in this movie. I would have never guessed it was her acting!

Caught it a few days ago. It was pretty good, but I think my high expectations of Charlie Kaufman sort of caused me to be a little disappointed.
