That Amazon belt is not an Inzer belt. It's not a bad belt, either. I actually have one. It was my "starter" belt.

I am 6'2", 210 and the Inzer large is a little big. I tighten it to the 4th from last hole.

The Rippetoe thread was a fun read. I throughly enjoy his brash style.

Ended up with a pretty serious knee injury while squatting, fucked my leg up pretty bad. Reduced my training to upper body and anything that doesn't cause knee flexion for a while, as even walking pains me.

On a high note, press got up pretty high there. Here's hoping I can get back to squatting sometime soon.

Thanks for the encouragement and if you have any advice on where I can go next given my current routine and future ideas I would appreciate it as well.
I think Convict Conditioning was printed for people such as yourself. I don't buy into all of it, but it provides a solid foundation for building strength through bodyweight calisthenics. It provides templates of varying difficulties for pull-ups, pushups, back bridges, hanging leg raises, squats and handstand pushups. Right up your alley.

Best of all you can find it for less than the $39.99 MSRP + shipping that Dragon Door offers it for now. Shop around.

There are also a few other resources to browse in the OP. Post #5.

A quick question about nutrition: I've been basically avoiding anything carb-heavy, although I'm not religious about it and still allow myself to enjoy the odd pizza or burger every once in a while. Since I'm also working out though, should I be trying to include more carbs in my diet to help muscle growth? I've read conflicting information about this and still feel unsure about it.
Until you're training for a specific goal in the gym and not working out for general fat loss and fitness, I would recommend a stay in course. If anything I'd try to time my burger ravaging in the hour or so after a workout when those carbohydrates will be put to work in the post-workout window of unholy feasting.

It's only once the current course no longer produces the desired results that I would recommend a change in plans.

Was wondering where you've been. Sorry to hear about the knee bud.

Hey Parrot,

I know you have a similar injury to mine. Do you do any spinal decompression in the gym? We have these two "sleeve" things that latch onto a pull-up bar that I have been using to hang from. I was reading on SS forums that this is a good way to decompress the spine. I tried last night and it did seem to help a little but was a little painful (even thought i felt looser). Any experience with it?

Thank you for posting this! Number one, wow if he is opening SS based gyms nationally:

Number two, that's my Gym and that's the BB program I'm doing. Gregg is our coach.

Fuck that shit, they must be crazy.

Whoa whoa whoa. What is wrong with thick women? I love me some thick women....

I think I'm going to invest in a dip belt. The one at 24 Hour seems to be randomly missing and it can be extremely frustrating to do dips and chins with a dumbbell between your legs.

For those who use Casein, apparently this is a crazy good price:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001N4F20K/?tag=neogaf0e-20

It's for a 2-pack of 2lb jugs, so 4lb total for just over $28.

*edit*

Wow, the whole SD thread has turned into a debate about whether or not Casein causes cancer, never used it before but now I find myself looking into said studies.

Perfect. I needed me some protein. Scooped! Thanks!

Me too, but damn if I don't look at the meal plans and realize how expensive that all is. I'm a tight budget lately =/

It does get VERY expensive but when you think about it and don't buy crap food and you feed yourself quality food then it doesn't feel bad.

In addition to that, you don't have to eat that many meals a day. But don't forget, these guys are professionals. They do this for a living. It is understandable if someone cannot follow that diet exactly. I always see them as a guideline more than anything.

Thankfully I'm 150 with a goal of getting to 170.. It won't be as expensive as for someone that wants to weight 210 for example. I feel bad for those in that weight range +++ A lot more money spent on food in that range.

Mj, he says that thumbless grip should never be used, not because of danger, but because gripping the bar with the thumb allows the forearm muscles to be tighter and thus work harder.
I skipped right over this post a few days ago. Oops.

I'll work with both grips when I press today and pay close attention to the grip and how it irradiates. I figure I'll be able to tell the difference swiftly given my propensity for keeping my sets between 85%-90% of my 1RM.

Ah, just found an except on his website: Learning to Press [PDF].
The thumbless grip is never used when pressing, not because of the danger – which is obviously not there when the bar can be dropped to the floor. Rather, the thumbsaround grip permits the “squeeze” in the forearms that increases the tightness of the muscles, making the drive from the start position more efficient and increasing motor unit recruitment throughout the arms and upper body. Except for the squat, there is no thumbless grip in barbell training.

If the whole of the third edition is like this, I need to pick this book up. It was good before, but it's very clear and very easy to read. I saw on his website that he will be holding a seminar in my area in February. I was interested until I realized it was $800. I don't make any sort of living on weight training, nor do I have any other means to justify spending that sort of money even if it were to help my own training immensely. It really puts the $30 price tag for the softcover of the third edition in perspective.

Picked up that 4 lbs of Casein from amazon. It says it won't deliver until mid January but I don't mind since I have a good supply still left.

Haha, ya, I may be traveling to the PNW for business next spring and so took note of his class schedule. Same thing, when I saw the cost I stopped thinking about it.

Just to add to the belt conversation, I personally use it when squatting over around 250lbs. so when warm ups get to that point I put it on, and for work sets. Prior to that I dont use it. I find it to be very very helpful in making everything rock solid.

Also, anyone NOT using lifting shoes for squats? Definitely buy a pair. Highly recommended. Almost essential.

On squat days I use my five fingers.

I've been splitting my lifting sessions, is this okay for overall growth in strength and size? For example, I now go to my campus gym to deadlift/bench/squat/press, and then go home to do my smaller lifts (curls, shrugs, calf raises, etc). The time between these can be anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours. I have a solid snack after each "half" workout. Any chance I'm limiting myself by doing this? I've just gotten so sick of the long lines at my campus gym to get on any equipment, I've decided to only do the lifts I can't easily replicate at home (the larger lifts, as mentioned earlier).

I don't think its a problem as long as you do you main lifts first.

The belt makes a drastic difference. I personally feel so much stronger and tighter under the bar when I have one on.

GODDAMN. I'm so focused. My workout was amazing. And now I actually WANT to to some revision and makes notes for my upcoming school exams. I feel like I've found the perfect thing to take before I actually sit the papers.
P.S. I don't drink any caffeine, no coffee, no tea, no soft drinks. Occasionally a green tea though.

Agreed!!! When I'm at the gym, I'm much more interested in the women that are healthy looking and a bit fuller, not the skinny chicks who apparently are doing whatever they can to get even skinner. Blech.

It does get VERY expensive but when you think about it and don't buy crap food and you feed yourself quality food then it doesn't feel bad.

this is a good point, and I agree for the most part, I know how embarrassed I used to be when I went grocery shopping, buying so much garbage because it's the cheap stuff, frozen meals, etc etc. Bring it to the cashier and telling them, yeah, this is my diet...

Also this, it's basically a guideline I know, basically the foods that are there are what should be staples in a diet if your goals are similar. Wierd to see one guy eating like 3 apples a day, I dont think I could do that, I mean I love apples, but dang!

It's amazing how difficult it is to find jeans after you've added 3+ inches to your legs and glutes.

I need to buy 36 waist jeans even though I am a 33 just to be able to fit into the legs and hips portion, and then get a tailor to tighten the waist or else I can fit a tennis ball in my waist band.

I must've tried on about 20 different pairs of jeans hoping one brand wouldn't require a tailor.

This is the worst. I like slim jeans just cause I like a closer fit (and I think it looks better) but it is damn near impossible to get a pair because the waist will be too big.

About the jeans, I'm in a similar predicament. I'm pretty skinny but have thick legs for my built due to doing Starting Strength for a bit and easily growing mass in that area. I tried on the Levi's 511 jeans (which I could before) recently and it's physically impossible for me to wear them.. The only way I can fit them is if I get the bigger sizes (usually I wear 30", had to try 33") but then it looks ridiculous and doesn't even fit like skinny jeans.

I haven't used this site but a friend (who also happens to post on GAF) recommends Indi custom jeans. You can custom tailor it to your own dimensions and they look okay. Somewhat pricey though. Fortunately Express waist 30 normal fit still works for me, although it's getting tighter around the quads everyday.

What's your guys suggestion on wanting to lose weight and also get more fit?

I'm currently ~190 6'2, and trying to get down to about 175-178. Should I lost weight first then start working on getting fit, or is there a way to approach them simultaneously?

Lift weights and eat 500 cals below maintenance. Throw in some cardio but you don't have to go crazy with it.

I've been trying to do 45 minutes of cardio at least 3 times a week (typically hit 4 though). And then maybe 20 minutes of weight lifting. But my problem is I haven't stuck with a routine for weights, and my knee is fucked from surgery so I can't do deadlifts/squats.

175 at 6'2" is pretty borderline, unless you're going for the heroin chic look.

anyone shops at Aldi Supermarket?

They have some cheap products that actually taste pretty good like their fit and active line.

Started shopping there this weekend and got some of their non fat yogurt for 39 cents and greek for 89

http://www.aldi.us/us/html/product_range/6815_6821_ENU_HTML.htm

also had their own brand of whole grain oats for $1.99 the same 2 pound size as quaker oats.

Good place for cheap food?

My mother says Aldi is cheap shit. I dunno. I shop at Public for cheaper things made in a box, but for fresh foods, I shop at Fresh Market.

The effect is great the first few times you use it, but then it tapers off unfortunately.
