I think Convict Conditioning was printed for people such as yourself. I don't buy into all of it, but it provides a solid foundation for building strength through bodyweight calisthenics. It provides templates of varying difficulties for pull-ups, pushups, back bridges, hanging leg raises, squats and handstand pushups. Right up your alley.[snip]
Thanks for the encouragement and if you have any advice on where I can go next given my current routine and future ideas I would appreciate it as well.
Until you're training for a specific goal in the gym and not working out for general fat loss and fitness, I would recommend a stay in course. If anything I'd try to time my burger ravaging in the hour or so after a workout when those carbohydrates will be put to work in the post-workout window of unholy feasting.A quick question about nutrition: I've been basically avoiding anything carb-heavy, although I'm not religious about it and still allow myself to enjoy the odd pizza or burger every once in a while. Since I'm also working out though, should I be trying to include more carbs in my diet to help muscle growth? I've read conflicting information about this and still feel unsure about it.
The Rippetoe thread was a fun read. I throughly enjoy his brash style.
Ended up with a pretty serious knee injury while squatting, fucked my leg up pretty bad. Reduced my training to upper body and anything that doesn't cause knee flexion for a while, as even walking pains me.
On a high note, press got up pretty high there. Here's hoping I can get back to squatting sometime soon.
Did anyone post the Rippetoe reddit? http://www.reddit.com/r/Fitness/comments/n13d8/i_am_mark_rippetoe_author_of_starting_strength/
Fuck that shit, they must be crazy.
For those who use Casein, apparently this is a crazy good price:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001N4F20K/?tag=neogaf0e-20
It's for a 2-pack of 2lb jugs, so 4lb total for just over $28.
*edit*
Wow, the whole SD thread has turned into a debate about whether or not Casein causes cancer, never used it before but now I find myself looking into said studies.
Me too, but damn if I don't look at the meal plans and realize how expensive that all is. I'm a tight budget lately =/
It does get VERY expensive but when you think about it and don't buy crap food and you feed yourself quality food then it doesn't feel bad.
In addition to that, you don't have to eat that many meals a day. But don't forget, these guys are professionals. They do this for a living. It is understandable if someone cannot follow that diet exactly. I always see them as a guideline more than anything.
I skipped right over this post a few days ago. Oops.Mj, he says that thumbless grip should never be used, not because of danger, but because gripping the bar with the thumb allows the forearm muscles to be tighter and thus work harder.
The thumbless grip is never used when pressing, not because of the danger which is obviously not there when the bar can be dropped to the floor. Rather, the thumbsaround grip permits the squeeze in the forearms that increases the tightness of the muscles, making the drive from the start position more efficient and increasing motor unit recruitment throughout the arms and upper body. Except for the squat, there is no thumbless grip in barbell training.
Picked up that 4 lbs of Casein from amazon. It says it won't deliver until mid January but I don't mind since I have a good supply still left.
Haha, ya, I may be traveling to the PNW for business next spring and so took note of his class schedule. Same thing, when I saw the cost I stopped thinking about it.If the whole of the third edition is like this, I need to pick this book up. It was good before, but it's very clear and very easy to read. I saw on his website that he will be holding a seminar in my area in February. I was interested until I realized it was $800. I don't make any sort of living on weight training, nor do I have any other means to justify spending that sort of money even if it were to help my own training immensely. It really puts the $30 price tag for the softcover of the third edition in perspective.
Just to add to the belt conversation, I personally use it when squatting over around 250lbs. so when warm ups get to that point I put it on, and for work sets. Prior to that I dont use it. I find it to be very very helpful in making everything rock solid.
Also, anyone NOT using lifting shoes for squats? Definitely buy a pair. Highly recommended. Almost essential.
I've been splitting my lifting sessions, is this okay for overall growth in strength and size? For example, I now go to my campus gym to deadlift/bench/squat/press, and then go home to do my smaller lifts (curls, shrugs, calf raises, etc). The time between these can be anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours. I have a solid snack after each "half" workout. Any chance I'm limiting myself by doing this? I've just gotten so sick of the long lines at my campus gym to get on any equipment, I've decided to only do the lifts I can't easily replicate at home (the larger lifts, as mentioned earlier).

Could you put the link up, i'd be interested in the read.
Whoa whoa whoa. What is wrong with thick women? I love me some thick women....

Pork rinds are amazing for upping my calories on low carb.
Keto sucks. I love sandwiches too much. And milk.
I've learned just to eat lettuce wraps, all the sandwich but the bread.

That's kind of sad :-(
On squat days I use my five fingers.
It's amazing how difficult it is to find jeans after you've added 3+ inches to your legs and glutes.
I need to buy 36 waist jeans even though I am a 33 just to be able to fit into the legs and hips portion, and then get a tailor to tighten the waist or else I can fit a tennis ball in my waist band.
I must've tried on about 20 different pairs of jeans hoping one brand wouldn't require a tailor.
What's your guys suggestion on wanting to lose weight and also get more fit?
I'm currently ~190 6'2, and trying to get down to about 175-178. Should I lost weight first then start working on getting fit, or is there a way to approach them simultaneously?
Lift weights and eat 500 cals below maintenance. Throw in some cardio but you don't have to go crazy with it.

anyone shops at Aldi Supermarket?
They have some cheap products that actually taste pretty good like their fit and active line.
Started shopping there this weekend and got some of their non fat yogurt for 39 cents and greek for 89
http://www.aldi.us/us/html/product_range/6815_6821_ENU_HTML.htm
also had their own brand of whole grain oats for $1.99 the same 2 pound size as quaker oats.
Good place for cheap food?
I took Jack3D for the first time today. (About 1 and half hours ago)
GODDAMN. I'm so focused. My workout was amazing. And now I actually WANT to to some revision and makes notes for my upcoming school exams. I feel like I've found the perfect thing to take before I actually sit the papers.
P.S. I don't drink any caffeine, no coffee, no tea, no soft drinks. Occasionally a green tea though.
PR on bench today. Think I'm going up again next week too.
Made possible by a weekend of steak and cheese, calzones, and pizza.
