I just tried on a pair of boxers I used to wear. My ass and hips and legs are filling them out pretty quick--they're almost like boxer-briefs on me now.

It's the little things like this that are amusingly exciting lol.

I think I'm going to post before/after pics in a few weeks if this weight-gain continues. :D

And yes I'm seriously drinking a gallon a day. It was hard the first couple of days with lots of trips to the bathroom (where I crapped but it was never actually diarrhea).

Now it's not hard at all so long as I start early in the day and finish before my work out. My body's finally adjusted to digesting all that lactose, too, I think.

I think if you stick with the GOMAD diet the first week it isn't too hard afterwards. I know people recommend you ease into it, but I (possibly unwisely) just started drinking a gallon of milk out of nowhere. Like I said, left me extremely bloaty and made my intestines hate me, but now I'm okay and the diet is doing it's thing.

EDIT: HOLY CRAP. Guys I just checked my work-out log.

These were my lifts for one set, 8-10 reps.

June 20--last week. I could only lift 45 lbs. on the leg extension machine, 65 lbs. on squats, 15 lbs. on the military press, and 35 lbs. on the multi-bench-press machine.

Today I easily lifted 95 lbs. on the quads/hamstrings leg extension machine, 95 lbs. on squats, 30 lbs. on the military press and 45 lbs. on the multi-bench-press machine.

WTF are these kinds of improvements in just ONE WEEK normal??? O_O

Sure are. I've been working out for years but only incorporated deadlifts into my routine in January. Started at 135, up to 380 now.

Those first few months you'll see incredible gains. It's what happens afterwards that truly tests your strategy and technique.

Cruising around isn't going to do much, but find a hill and sprint up, cruise down is as good as HIIT running IMO.

For those stuck inside, I agree a treadmill is preferable over a stationary bike, but cost and space can be a factor. I'm stuck with aerobics with dumbells and still quite happy with the cardio results.
it is AN hiit exercise, but not as good as running. you still use many more muscle groups in running, especially in "fast-as-you-can-fucking-move" sprinting (which you SHOULD be doing for hiit anyway)

however I am a firm believer that you have to mix your routines up... it's actually why I loved the WODs so much. so if you throw a cycling HIIT every once in a while into normal sprinting HIITs, it would definitely keep things fun for you.

this is actually my biggest concern with seeing convict conditioning through to the end.. I am imagining steps 6-10 of each exercise are going to go for a considerably long time.. a lot of the reason I am going through Naked Warrior right now actually... to sub bodyweight varieties in every few weeks to keep me interested and focused.

I think this happens a lot. A kid does some casual workouts and uses that as an excuse to eat like a pig under the assumption that he's "bulking".

Quite frequently here I see the recommendation that you need to eat to gain muscle. Yes, that's absolutely true, but I cringe when I see this because I bet a lot of guys are not working out with enough intensity to justify significant calorie increase.
"Bulking" advice is quite often "fattening" advice.
this 100%!!!!!!!! typically the most hardcore workouts barely even push 500 calories.. and often not even near 400 calories. people only want to look for (quick) gains and losses. working out should be about STRICTLY muscle strength (and size if you really care), but to often people worry about the god damn scale, which of course has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO with your muscles when all is said and done.

if you are too fat, concentrate on losing fat while keeping muscle. if you are too skinny, concentrate on getting stronger. both will get your body to where it needs to be without going through a drastic diet (beyond the basics outlined in the first posts of this thread)

the thing is he's not even really fat or skinny, he's kind of stuck in that transition of skinny-fat called skat.

but he worked on gaining muscle for over a year and a half and only gained fat, that's the thing :\

I really like chips - salt and vinegar potato chips, doritos, etc. It makes me happy when I eat them. Other than eating maybe 3 bags (like the .99 cent bags you'd find in convenience stores) of chips a week, I eat very well. I'm trying to bulk, and I'm eating a lot these days (all good stuff I've seen recommended on this thread and elsewhere).

Is three bags a week going to make enough of real difference that I should quit? Or should I just accept this one guilty food pleasure and enjoy?

Hey Fitness-GAF, stationary bikes: Yay or Nay?

Nay, if you are in an area that has great places to ride. Bikesdirect.com has a lot of cheap bikes, especially road bikes, and are pretty durable and can take a beating. I really suggest you look into it. There's nothing I love more than the freedom of a bicycle. I can't believe I stopped for so many years. Last year I started up and my first ride was...a great experience to say the least, and felt really good.

As mentioned, stationary bikes just take all the fun out of it.

I should start adding something like sprints to my routine now that I think of it.

I'm no expert and guilty pleasures are fine as long as they're kept in check, but my advice is to try and understand why you said the bolded part. Why do you think it makes you happy? Plenty of other things make you happy as well I'm sure, but when people try and explain why they eat what they do, the answers are generally suprising, and I mean more than just "well they taste good!"

But damn I love chips too, but have them every blue moon now instead of nearly every day like I use to.

I like how they taste. It's one thing from my diet I'd like to be able to enjoy still if I can. I used to eat pretty poorly, and now eat all good stuff, minus a few bags of chips a week.

Christ.

Try almonds if you need to work on getting rid of the habit part of that problem.

I think I'm going to shift over to Insanity for the next month. It is something I've always wanted to try and just want to do it. I will still try to hit the gym but only for the main compound lifts. My goal for lifting is just to maintain where I am at. Not going to worry about improvement for the next month or so.

Hope it works lol.

im skinny fat at the moment to whoever posted about it above. the best thing to do would be to go on a cut, because the fact is that you DO have body fat and you won't lose it by bulking...so it's best to keep protein intake per lb of lean body mass and cut calories by 500 cals. and lift as heavy as you can. cardio isn't even necessary but keep the lifting sessions intense.

Ok, so I told myself if I maxed over 350 I would post a pic for Fitness GAF.

Here's the first one in about a year.

This is me just now at 5 foot 8 inches 240 lbs after I maxed my bench at 355.

Sorry Cooter, couldn't get 360.

Sorry for the crap quality, it's a pain in the ass to self photo with these phones when your muscles are shaking.

Also, no I'm not flexing in either pic, I'm not a cheeseball.

So there it is, there's me and I maxed out at 355 today. Time for a celebratory nap!

If he's really eating clean with every other piece of food he puts in his mouth, he'll be fine.
I dunno, after looking at the nutrition facts Mickey might be right. Those .99 bags are 2.75 oz.

150 calories per ounce, 10g of fat, 14g carbs. So each bag I'm eating is 27.5 grams of fat, nearly 450 calories. That's almost 10% of my daily calories from crap in a bag.

Maybe I'll cut it down to one bag every other week, which I can live with.

Edit - whoops, I do not eat 4500 calories per day. But still...

I managed to squat 405 at the end of my set with no belt last week. I weigh 175. Not world breaking numbers, but definitely a milestone. Funny thing is I hadn't been to the gym 2 weeks prior.
Wow good shit man, some serious numbers for your weight.

SeanR1221 said:
That's a bigger bag than I thought.

Can't you just get smaller bags? Or buy a big bag and count out the amount of chips = to 1oz?

Sorry - I think they are closer to 1.75 oz. I can't find the right size online and don't have one in front of me. Think Lays "Big Grab" or equivalent $0.99 bag of chips from a 7-11. Any way you slice it, 3 a week is probably excessive, and I can come down from that.

Hit up a Costco and get the 50 pack of chips (doritos, lays, cheetos, fritos). all are about 1oz or less and average about 150 calories per bag. I usually have one or two throughout the week.

Since the part of me that seems to be fattening the fastest (and the only part of my body previously that seemed to have any fat whatsoever lol) is the front part of my belly, I'm wondering what I'm going to do later if I end up getting a gut that hugely spills over my waistline, haha. I think the "fat-trimming" stage after GOMAD will be the most interesting/challenging, to be honest. Oh well, let's worry about getting there first I suppose.

Are there any good ab/obiques/lat free-weight or body weight exercises one recommends? Preferably ones that train as many core/torso muscles at once. I've always been bad at training that part of my body.

Olympic bars are needed for the movements they were designed for ie: squats, dead lifts, bench press, cleans etc... wasting an olympic bar to do fucking curls is for people more concerned with an outward display of strength that only impresses the uninitiated as opposed to actually moving weight.

Any gym worth its salt will have smaller barbells available for putting plates on them if you need to do arm-specific workouts.

Nothing cracks me up more than seeing some dude put 2 10s on each side of a barbell and curling that.

Also, what's up with dudes who come into the gym like peacocks? Just last saturday this guy came in with a new ballcap, sunglasses, clean nikes, and clothing that looked like he was going to a "non dressup" club.

He literally looked like he was going out casual for the day to pickup "less than classy" girls, but he was sitting on the row machine (didn't actually see him do shit except for look in the mirror).

Seriously, gtfo of my gym.

This might be a dumb question, but I've had several people tell me this. Is it bad to take a shower right after a workout? Am I supposed to wait a little while first?

Nice work! I was close. I bet you would have got it if you weren't so scared of the 2 1/2's.

No, I used them, and I tried 360, it stayed on the catch bars, haha.

355 was it, and it was a bitch getting it up.

I'll try max again probably in a month.

For anybody who doesnt like working out by themselves in a gym, give boxing a try! Ive been doing it for a few months and its been AMAZING. Huge boost in stamina, posture and overall built (lots more definition) Find a trainer you can do sessions with (or with a friend, youll probably get a discount)

I second this. I have been doing "Fight Club" at my gym and it's a huge confidence boost! I recommend only once a week to minimize muscle loss (high cardio), but it's great!

That video's awesome.

But: If you want to work in, ask. Don't just stand around like a dumbass.

I do super sets back to back on adjustable benches and can spend up to 20 minutes on it but I'm not just sitting around.

I don't know if I'm posting this in the right place or not, but I don't want to bump older threads. I'm 21, 6 feet tall and weigh 140. I go to the gym about 4 to 5 times a week and I'm trying to build mass. What protein supplement do I use? I live with my parents and they are vegetarian, so unless I eat out, protein shakes are my main source. How much protein should I take a day? And which protein powder should I buy? I usually use EAS whey protein, but I bought muscle milk a month ago and just finished it today. I felt that muscle milk worked a little better than EAS.
Also, should I start taking creatine? I'm finding it hard to gain weight...

Ok GAF, help me sort out my PWO carbs. I'm cutting at the moment, so I've been cutting down my carb intake all around. ATM I weight about 220 pounds with about 17% BF, and aiming for about 1g of carbs per pound of LBM.

Just to give you an idea, my only carb intakes are a cup of rolled oats in the morning with a Tbsp of honey for breakfast, then a slice of whole wheat bread pre-workout. PWO, I'm taking 2 scoops of Syntha-6 protein powder (15g of carbs per scoop, so 30g total) plus about 20 gummi bears for another 30g, giving me about 60g of carbs total PWO. Dinnertime I usually have a cup of brown rice (I live in Asia, so rice is kinda hard to get away from) and then either some steamed brocolli or a garden salad. I don't really snack, so as far as my meals go, those are it.

I'm wondering if 60g PWO is enough, or if I should shuffle more of my carb intake into PWO away from my other meals during the day.
