Hey Gaf, know of anything that helps with joint and tendon strength and recovery? Been at this gymnastics workout for a while and I just want to make sure they're recovering alright. My knees and ankles especially take a pounding when I'm doing the couch to 5k runs on my off days.

glucosamine. ymmv, as some ppl say it doesnt do shit, but i like to think it does to my acutely arthritic knees.

Damn, I'm gonna have to check out some Star Six vanilla. Pretty sick of the EAS and anyway finally looks like it's on the last bit of back stock at Sam's Club.

Cool, thanks. I'll be sure to check it out.

I remember reading a few studies saying it doesn't do anything so it may be worth doing a little research beforehand.
Yeah, definitely. I always do research before putting anything into my body.

i walked into the gym today, and there are like 6 versions of a squat rack. some had horizontal bars to stop the bar from dropping all the way to the floor, some didnt. some had the bar on a track, some didnt. one had two foot stands about a foot off the floor - whats gym etiquette generally? where should i go do squats? i dont even know how much i can do, so i want to figure that out in the safest way possible, aka in the proper rack

vs

squat-rack-245x300.jpg

(without the horizontal bars)

also my ankles dont really bend well enough for me to do a squat with the bar behind my head - my centre of gravity is too far back. i can't find anywhere that tells about proper form to do a squat with the bar in front of you, anyone have a useful link?

thanks

The ones that seem they're on tracks are Smith Machines, generally you want to avoid them as they lock you into limited range of motion.

You want to find the free racks. The horizontal bars might be adjustable or removable, so watch other people use them if you're not sure.

Then when you can adjust the rack to put the barbell at around neck-height, load it onto your back and practice squatting with JIST THE BAR. Can't emphasize that enough. Do not add weight, especially for your first time.

Do a couple sets of 5 reps and then stop and see how you feel the next day. If you can record yourself squatting to see your form compared to YouTube videos for example, that'd be ideal.

so i think i have my first 'real' injury.. probably overworked my shoulders/arms, my right is fine but i have a sharp pain in my left shoulder (feels like a connector muscle/tendon between neck and shoulder) and just above my left elbow is sore, it feels softer than my right and there could be a bit of fluid in there, why must 1 side be weaker / more injury prone :/

Got back from the gym, had a tuna sandwich followed by a steak, potatoes and some salad. This wasn't even an hour ago and I'm already hungry. My hormones have been going into overdrive recently. This hopefully means I'll be seeing some big gains.

i caught a segment of the crossfit games yesterday on espn2. some ridiculous shit was going on there.

i secretly want to join the local crossfit affiliate for a month to shake up my strength training and conditioning...but it's so freaking expensive.

Anyone ever have heart palpitations following an intense workout? I had a pretty bad headache straight after and a day later I've been having these palpitations regularly.

Yes I've been to the doctor but he didn't do much. If it's still happening after 24 hours I may go again.

Heart problems scare me :(

Would anyone care to explain to me briefly why when starting out it's better to do 5-6 reps rather than, say, 10-12? That's what I've been doing from the advice to this thread (without question I guess, which is still kind of dumb, regardless of whether it's right or not) and my buddy made fun of me for it but I didn't real have an explanation as to why it was good to do it...

Read OP#2. 5 reps is good for increasing strength, which is what you want to start with before moving on to increasing muscle volume, which is what you're doing with 10-12 reps.

Follow up to this point:

Not only are five reps great for increasing strength, which they are, but they aren't to bad at hypertrophy. In other words....

The more volume you do (reps times weight), the bigger you get. The more intensity (max weight achievable for number of reps) you do, the stronger you get. Five reps is the best number between those two ends of the scale.

Jason, lookin sexy daddy. Nice work.

I don't know how you can do all that without getting completely burned out. I do 4 or 5 exercises each time I go to the gym and I'm completely dead by the end of it.

Gosh really? I'm a fat cunt @ 101 kg and i do a shit load of stuff at the gym. I come out feeling great. I'm also generally Iron aenimic due to beta thalassemia.

I'll start with 10 mins of stretching,
25 min gentle intervals on the treadmill (2 mins warmup, followed by 1 min @ 8kph/11kph alternate).
Bench, 10 reps each @ 50kg, 70kg, 80kg, 85kg and 90kg
Lots of free weights at 12.5kg

10mins seated bike with half-full resistance, also intervals @ 20kph/30kph

20 quick pressups on my knuckles, followed by 10 where i hold the press at it's lowest point for 5 seconds before pushing up. 40 situps.
Lateral Pulldown/shoulder press machines, 10 reps @ 100kg/80kg/60kg each
Chest Press 10 reps @ 60kg (hate the machine).
Leg press (100 reps across 3 stances), Adductor, Abductor (both 80 reps), @ 100kg, seated curls 60 reps @ 70/60/50kg.

Finish off with Elliptical, 10 mins of mid-resistance, switching between forward and backward motion every minute. Gentle jog on treadmill for 10 mins and then some stretching to chill with the mandem.

Come out of the gym 3 times a week feeling like a new man. Some days I double up on some things.

Probably not the greatest regime ever, though

Oh yeah you do lots of cardio. I live on a college campus and do about 10-15 miles of biking a day so I don't do any cardio in the gym.

If you aren't spent by the end of a workout your doing something wrong. I can barely move around after my deadlift day.

Nice! Been meaning to sort my bike out so i can cycle to the gym instead of driving. It's only 2 miles, though.

[edit]Bealost: I seem to find a massive spurt of energy halfway through my session. Yeh sure i'm tired afterwards but not so much so that I can't do anything or feel shitty. Maybe i am doing something wrong? I'll get one of the instructors to have a look over me next time i'm at the gym.

You might as well jog to the gym if it's only two miles.

He's just parroting a quote from Archer, one the most awesome shows on television. For the past six months Jason's Ultimatum has adopted the mannerisms of his cartoon idol. If I didn't watch the show I wouldn't know that half of his posts are joke posts where he's used a relevant quote from the show.

He has become one with his avatar.

I was implying your were doing something wrong at all. Feeling good after a workout is good! But if you aren't tired at the same time, than you can probably stand to up the intensity some is all I'm saying.

So when doing five reps, should I be using enough weight that I'm struggling to hit 5?

And I would've gotten a very, VERY hot girl from school from quoting Archer. She said she was attracted to me because I made her laugh...........then I emailed her some Archer clips. BIG MISTAKE. She thought I was the one who came up with the funny lines.

But my puns in a lot of threads are original and funny, so I'm getting there.

This thread has been amazing reading. So far I'm down 10 lbs just eating better and doing cardio (biking and got a treadmill). I'll post more later I need some tips!

I never saw the show and I knew he was joking. Will check it out eventually.

Rough week at work and now I'm going camping, so it'll be a full week by the time I get to the gym next! But I got some stair running in and I'll do a lot of swimming this weekend.

Well, you should still be able to however many sets you intend to, but yes, if the 5 reps aren't tough, you're doing it wrong.

Eh, too late, now. She moved to D.C. and is now dating a guy who I believe played football for Georgetown. Oh well. Plenty of fish in the sea, anyway.
