Flawed Games You Actually Like

MGSV. Clearly unfinished but still loved the game. Gameplay is so damn refined even tho the story takes a nosedive once you take out snuffleupagus. Doing harder version of missions you've already done to progress the story kinda sucks too.
This game is under my top10 ever! I dont even understand why it shall be unfinished.

X4: Foundations
...also under my top5 ever. Greatest single player space sim sandbox EVER! But its sitting on a measly 59/100 on metacritics. Problem is the studio is small, the game is fckn huuuge and there are always bugs and problems at release....but nowadays its a 10/10!

hmmm.... see all games have flaws.

but going with the general thread premise of "game that wasn't lauded or considered great"...

then some would be:
GR:Breakpoint
Sonic Adventure
Star Fox Adventures
the first Medal of honor COD Clone
The Order 1886
Kilzone Shadowfall
Enemy Territory Quakewars
Starhawk

and much more, those just come to mind now

Final Fantasy XV.
Consider a huge step down in the series today, but honestly i enjoyed the character designs and the plot
No Way Seriously GIF by Bounce

(i liked the combat gameplay and the cheesy plot too but my god those designs :messenger_tears_of_joy: )

Deadly Premonition. And no, I don't like it because being " so bad it's good". I'm a Twin Peaks fan and I geniunely like its open world design.

From that point on i knew prof journos/reviewers are simply sellouts.

Vampire Rain: Altered Species

I actually finished the game and loved it!

It's the Deadly Premonition of stealth games :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Dear God, Vampire Rain is genuinely my most hated / worse game of ALL TIME, no exaggeration. Plus the cunt of a game cost me £69.99 on the 360. It still haunts me....I am actually in shock that only did you love it, but you actually beat it.

Did really love Dead Premonition though, it was so bad and janky it ended up giving off a special charm and the game is so unique.

I love Dead Space 3. The opening is absolutely crazy and hilarious at the same time. I feel like the whole tone of the game kinda went over people's heads. It's a much more in your face action game this time but they totally lean into it with the characters and writing. It feels like some cheesy action flick from the 90s and I love it for that.

I understand the departure from the first 2 games, not being nearly as scary or having the limited resources to make it like a survival-horror. Its definitely not that, but I'm totally fine with it.

Beyond that though I loved the space walking and zero G segments of this game. Very atmospheric with a much larger area to explore. Loved the tram sections.

Definitely a flawed game. It has a co-op mechanic where each player sees something different in parts of the game. It's not important at all though and can be played as a single player game with no issues.

Devil May Cry 2. Despite its many flaws, I appreciate:

- The level variety
- The atmospheric music
- Dante's cool outfit and move set.
- The added route playing Lucia.

Final Fantasy XV. Things I love about this game:

- The BSO. It's wonderful, one of the best in the saga.
- The towns and their vibes.

- Nier Replicant (the original)

- Plot, music, bosses, characters, 10/10

I got absolutely sucked into a black hole of immersion when this game came out.

I had just gotten out of a crappy relationship, was feeling pretty terrible and work was rough at the time. This came out and I just sank into it.

It has more issues than merits but I absolutely love it

I'll remember this when I play it. First game is not good, second game is amazing.

Is it a DOOM game? Kinda-sorta-but-also-not-really?
Does it have lots of monster closets and jump scares? Yeah.
Is it one of my favourite games of all time? You're God damn right.

remember me
enemy variety sucks, and story skips too many beats and even though combat is really boiled down to three basic combo chains, it just flows in a way that makes me crave to play that game again (I just did a replay a couple weeks ago). and of course gallivanting through the intricately crafted streets of this alternative neo-paris in a dystopian cyberpunk theme is just the cherry on the cake. I find the vibes of the main character quite cool although her script and her character writing could have been much better... ultimately while its metacritic is like 75, I'd still personally give it an 80.

in some perspectives, this game is heavily flawed. while it is really difficult, as intended, the difficulty spikes are enormous even at the start of the game. normally puzzle games would have a gradual difficulty curve as you go along, readying you for what is to come. this game is however brutal. in a way, it is a flaw since it pushes a lot of people away from this game in quick fashion. yet to me, I liked the challenge from the get-go and it became the reason I was hooked to the game so much.

halo infinite.
the whole game is a flaw by itself. story was so short and meant nothing, yet the gameplay was so great that I didn't care and ended up liking it. I did end up playing its multiplayer for like 300 hours, so there's that.

marvel's avengers
really creative combat, just like atomic heart. it has lots of different characters, and a whole variety of combos for each one of them, it almost feels like an entirely different game when you change characters. horrible voice acting, dealing with the same-looking robots over and over again, and a subpar main story that wouldn't even hold a candle to the most generic MCU you can watch

Skull and Bones gets alot of hate but i enjoy it for what it is. Its by no means perfect or some 10/10 - but because its UbiSoft, the hate and want to see it fail from others is high.
That's probably the most recent.

Fun thread.

I played Final Fantasy XV earlier this year and while the game has issues I ended up having a real soft spot for it. A true remake that fixed all the disjointed narrative problems and things that came up during development would really go a long way to making it a better experience. A Directors Cut re-release could be great. And Ardyn is a top 3 FF villain for me.

Mass Effect Andromeda is the other one I'll always defend. It's also got issues but a true sequel to it could have ironed a lot of those problems out. I love the trilogy, but I really liked the direction Andromeda could have went narratively.

Every game is flawed, so all of them. I can name ways I'd improve every game, even my favorites.

There are few games where it's difficult to name ways it would be better. Tetris and Rocket League are the closest I xan think of.

Apart from the end parts, I didn't think this game got much negativity. I personally absolutely loved it and the guitar mini game got me into Theory of a Deadman.

With all the Itakagi stuff, i´m playing Devil´s Third, and despite it´s flaws its actually good and has a main character with something lacking this days: attitude!

Also i´d add some of my favorites flawed gems:

- Spawn in the Demons Hands: i know press gave it a hard time due to its camera issues, but it´s not that bad and 4 players experience it´s amazing, even today. Also playing Boss Fight in Cooperative i´ts pretty cool and love the big bosses. ..Graphics and music are incredible, for a 2000 game (textures looks amazing and have aged very well)...Also the opening video it´s fucking art! Even today it´s still the best Spawn game...i mean, Spawn Armageddon really sucks!

The best Spawn game and one of the Capcom's best game managed to adapt the universe in a brilliant way.

Yeah the writing and characters suck, 90% of the game is just running down a hallway fighting battles, and most of the backstory is hidden away in the codex.

But I thought it had maybe the best music, battle system, and overall audiovisual presentation in the series. I wish they'd revisit the battle system in another game. It's fast paced, challenging, rewards you for playing well, and every single role/ability/buff/debuff are useful even in non-boss battles. Also loved how your party members will experiment to figure out which debuffs and elements the enemy is succeptible to. You naturally become more effective as you learn more about the enemy.

And the lore is actually pretty cool if you take the time to read the codex.

I played this game in complete isolation of online forums and absolutely loved it.

Everyone should do this. Not for EtM, but for all games. You wanna come in and share thoughts after you've played it, sure.

The perpetual toxicity and negativity around hoping games bomb, review poorly, etc by people that haven't played them is not healthy.

"Well I need to see what it's like before buying"

No you don't. You can basically try any game for ~2 hrs today and get refunded if you don't like it. Or watch actual reviews on YT, not streamer slop. Funny enough, I've found the reviewers that are "bought/paid" have far LESS bias and more objectivity than GAF or Reddit.

The central mechanic about drawing shapes to make different weapons is very gimmicky and sometimes feels frustratingly inconsistent, and the fact the game does a pretty poor job at explaining itself and teaching you how to play properly doesn't help.
Then you add other details like the platforming feeling a bit finicky, the camera IMO being too far away during exploration and too zoomed in during combat, and some annoying parts where it turns into a bland shoot'em up for a bit, and what you get is a pretty flawed game with a 78 metascore I mostly agree with.

But man I just love it. Love how unique the gameplay feels and how fun it becomes once it finally clicks (the second playthrough in particular is a blast), I love the art direction with that cartoony tilt shift aesthetic and the Viewtiful Joe inspired character designs, the fact they actually made 100 unique heroes for you to find, the humorous story and writing that feels like a love letter to classic Super Sentai and Anime, even the music is great.
Playing this game often made me feel like a kid watching Power Rangers on a Sunday morning, and I love it for it.

- CoD WaW Wii: i know this one didnt got the recognition it deserved, because it was eclipsed by the main PS360 edition, but man, it was running on CoD 4 engine on the Wii! That itself was unbelievable...And yes, it looked subpar vs. HD versions, but really stomped on the visual level any other CoD and WWII fps on 6th gen consoles and in fact any fps at least on the PS2, there was a reason why PS2 got a different version (WaW Final Fronts, made by Rebellion). It was a win, taking into account most part of Wii´s multiplattform games were just PS2 ports with motion controllers, so... Had a blast with this one, and also the controls were pretty good, to the point i´m still not interested on the HD version to this day.

Bro, Spawn on DC emulator on emudeck is completely fixable with Steam custom input settings, and it's legitimately such a goddamn awesome game. Simple and fun, basically it's gorey edgelord Powerstone, and it's amazing for it.

Seconded for Battlefield Hardline, especially the single player campaign. If it wasn't titled Battlefield, I don't think people would have been so harshly critical of it.
I think that's the core issue. I don't know what the hell whoever was responsible for naming it was thinking and proposed that as a good idea. It probably pushed away some fans and caused the reputational domino effect of "a bad Battlefield game". Its like self-inflicted damage. I have a hunch the original namesake was just plain "Hardline" till it got tacked on.

It nailed the "Over the top late 2000s/2010s FOX Network cop show in Miami" feel that it was going for:

(...)

All of those cool action cops you'd normally see in TV/movies in ridiculous scenarios, and you finally get to play as one. I don't think any other game will ever try and go for this specific feeling in the future (at least not for years and without a good budget), so that makes BF Hardline uniquely special.
I'm sorta baffled by the lack of Cop narrative-centric games these days. Played Hardline a while ago and thought it was solid. Even got away with the Platinum trophy just before server closure (PS3). That said, I gotta criticise the episodic "TV show" format. It seemed more like a way of padding the length.

I really like New World.

It's got plenty of problems but they keep trying and I keep playing.

Black Desert online is also a very flawed game. The PVP especially is bad where gear trumps skill. Story is terrible, it's microtransaction hell. Probably the grindiest game I've ever played. Yet I'm still there, trying to slap two rings together to upgrade and having them both destroyed in the process.

For me, it'd be those two:

MV5BY2JkOGZiYzQtYTM0YS00Zjg0LTk0YzEtMGJlZmExYTA3MzY0XkEyXkFqcGc@._V1_FMjpg_UX1000_.jpg

Funny because they have the same flaws: half-cooked with a lot of missing content, and a difficulty curve that's messed up beyond repair without any semblance of proper challenge or balance.

Still love 'em.

Bionic Commando seventh gen reboot was fantastic. The main character design was kind of goofy, and the grapple swinging was often awkward, but the campaign was well paced and had some awesome moments.

Using the grapple arm to sweep everything 360 degrees around you felt amazing. The sound design also deserves some praise with Mike Patton in the voice cast and an underrated soundtrack:

I'd say the plot twist at the end is also one of the biggest wtf moments in gaming history.

GRIN did a great job and along with Dead Rising 2 was proof that not everything went wrong in the dark days of Capcom outsourcing everything.
