Following in the tradition of bigots everywhere, a Florida church is preparing to hold a book-burning. Not just any book; the Quran.

Dove World Outreach Center is a non-denominational evangelical church in Gainesville, Florida. They have announced a special celebration of the 9th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks . . . something that will show Christian love, reduce hatred between people of different religions, and lead toward greater understanding around the world.(:lol) Or not.

Dove will host “International Burn a Quran Day” on September 11, 2010. Pastor Terry Jones says the idea came, in part, from the recent success of “Everybody Draw Muhammad Day”. He comments that “We feel, as Christians, one of our jobs is to warn,” and that burning the holy books of another religion will provide Muslims an opportunity to convert.

Jones missed the point of Everybody Draw. That event, in response to the irrational attacks (including physical assaults, attempted murder, attempted arson, and successful murder) on Western cartoonists, authors, and filmmakers who drew or otherwise criticized Muhammad, Islam’s prophet, was intended to communicate to radical Islamists that Westerners would not cave to their demands of censorship.

International Burn is not about freedom of expression. It is about hatred of Islam, not just the radical actions of some Muslims.

Jones is author of a book, Islam Is of the Devil. The book’s title reflects a sign placed outside Dove World Outreach, and explains Jones’s history working to “free souls from Islam”. He further explains how his church uses the congregation’s children as political pawns, sending them to school wearing shirts saying “Jesus is the Way” on the front, and “Islam is of the Devil” in the back.

Jones and his congregation have chosen to take an action that will not convert Muslims to Christianity. It will only serve to fan the flames of hatred, enraging even moderate Muslims.

I've never really understood the purpose of book burning. Oh, sure, I understand the THEORY, but ultimately you're just drawing more attention to those books.

Extremists. :/

I guess they're the ones to blame for giving religion a bad perception?

Yeah, it's a lot more fun to offer to swap your religious texts for porn magazines.

Surely it's completely counter intuitive? they must have bought the books they're going to burn, and I'm sure those books aren't sold at a loss...

"burning the holy books of another religion will provide Muslims an opportunity to convert."
:lol What's the logic behind this, how will it provide Muslims with an opportunity to convert?

"Jones missed the point of Everybody Draw."
No shit.

Idiots. Its people like that who continue to give terrorists the will to fight.
Many terrorists would be inclined to kill us no matter what, but, I agree -- this certainly would make their cause seem all the more legitimate, I would think.

The fact that America has a large Jewish community is enough for them to hate us.

The enmity between us and the Jews goes far back in time and is deep rooted. There is no question that war between the two of us is inevitable. For this reason it is not in the interest of Western governments to expose the interests of their people to all kinds of retaliation for almost nothing. It is hoped that people of those countries will initiate a positive move and force their governments not to act on behalf of other states and other sects. This is what we have to say and we pray to Allah to preserve the nation of Islam and to help them drive their enemies out of their land.

The leaders in America and in other countries as well have fallen victim to Jewish Zionist blackmail.

I said make it seem all the more legitimate. Gives them yet another excuse to justify their hatred. I'm sure a video of these people burning the Quran would make for a compelling Al-Qaeda recruitment video.

Books get lost all the time, next time a Muslim misplaces his/her Qur'an they'll find they can't rebuy it because they were all burnt, and THEN they'll be left with no choice but to buy a bible.

CONVERSION COMPLETE.

Huh. I though the US was religiously neutral (I'm not from the US). In fact, it's probably the only place I've been that's religiously neutral.

Aren't the terrorists' motivation purely economical reasons plus oppression?

The US? Religiously neutral? In theory maybe... I can name many European countries that are much more neutral.

A significantly large portion of the US is one big God-fearin' pussy wagon. Depends on where you go.

This is a country that elected Bush to a second term largely due him being perceived as more moral, religious, etc.

US is not religiously neutral unless Saudi Arabia becomes religiously neutral.

Confused? Look up Newt Gingrich's quotes last week

In theory, yes. In practice, this country is backed by judeo-christian interests. That is the majority of the country and this is a democracy.

Non-denominational evangelist church, huh? I'm a Catholic, and evangelists weird me out.

I mean, shoot, Christians and Muslims pray to the same God for Christ's sake. Well, maybe that was a poor choice of words. At any rate, I don't see why we can't get along.

The main thing we seem to disagree on is whether or not Jesus was God's son and the savior, but we also disagree with Judaism on that, and we don't seem to have nearly the same problem with them. The main problem is this mix of religion and politics. We are friends with Israel, therefore we have no problem with Judaism. We are or have been enemies with just about every other Middle Eastern country, where Islam is the dominant religion, therefore Islam is the enemy?

Doesn't make sense to me.

Yes, because Newt Gingrich represents mainstream religious and political thought.

Most Americans are way more moderate than most foreigners think. Implying that the US is like a Christian version of Saudi Arabia is hilariously ill-informed.

I often say the same thing about religion in general.

I guess we think the same huh.

All in all and no matter what you believe, just do good and do good to others.

Well, I'm not opposed to it on legal grounds. Let them burn whatever.

I just think it's not worth their time and probably won't achieve whatever they believe it's going to achieve. I just don't think God is going to be standing at the pearly gates and saying, "Good job on the burning, guys. Front-row seats for you."

Cue GAF groupthink that organizations like this church are representative of most Christians...

Literally no one thinks this is representative of most Christians, and it's truly amazing that your first reaction to this story isn't to condemn the group in question, it's to defend another group that isn't even being attacked.

But yes, Gaf was quick to politicize this and criticize the right. What else is new from this board?

... riiight.

Well this is certainly going to add more fuel to the fire.

Did they really say this is going to promote peace? Fucking Idiots. :lol
