Oh come on, I was clearly setting him up for this! I had dibs!

Speaking of burning religious texts, my friend told me a story similar to this (Evangelical extremists, etc.) but this time, it's even worse. Should I post it here?

I am not surprised after what happened to me in Florida. :(

EDIT: Just read your other posts. No way you could elaborate? Your comments worry me though, as I have relatives who have just moved to Florida, and yes, they're Muslim.

Is this story genuine? The reasoning provided doesnt make sense at all.

At first I did believe that the story was too absurd to be true, until I remembered that people have been doing stupid things for a very long time.

Will you guys stop moving down here if you hate us so much? Also florida should be looked at as two areas. South Florida (Lets say orlando to north everglades down) and North Florida. North Florida is the South. South Florida is the Caribbean's Mainland.

That's how I've always viewed it. I'm from Broward.

Lol, who is this referring to? Muslims? I doubt the Muslims moving down anticipate they're going to get any racial hatred or bigotry thrown their way. It's not exactly something you tick off of things to look for in a new home.

I think he's referring to GAF's usual reaction to anything about Florida because of all the weird news threads(G-A-F?)

I couldn't help it.
Movies from the 80's and 90's lied to me about what I would find in Florida.

Literally no one thinks this is representative of most Christians, and it's truly amazing that your first reaction to this story isn't to condemn the group in question, it's to defend another group that isn't even being attacked.

The terminology that typically flies around in threads like these is along the lines of "right-wing," "uber-religious," "nutjobs," "Christians," "fundamentalists," etc. GAF paints with a broad brush indeed.

As for me condemning the group in question, of course I condemn their actions. Burning the holy book of another religion is nothing but incendiary.

He does this all the time.

For the record, he does NOT represent any Christians, I'm one and feel no need to throw persecution-related tantrums like he does in every thread related to religion.

That being said, these Florida goons are making the world a worse place. There is nothing laudable about their message, morals, or values. There is nothing defensible here. They are bad people, bad Christians, and any criticism they get is soundly deserved.

For the record, I'll be the one to determine whether or not I am representative of any Christians. And tantrum throwing? Please.

Nothing but incendiary...

This incident itself is happening in the small town of Gainesville. The metro area has a population of about a quarter mil, with half of that being students of the U of F. The people that actually live in some of these small, backwoods, places and the people attending and working at a school are usually not the same.

It just seems strange that something like this would happen in a scholastic setting. I'm not questioning the veracity of your story, though. It's just your reluctance to explain makes me... errr... question the veracity of your story.

I lived in Gainesville for three years (before moving away for school). The town is very redneck. The heart of the city is UF, and the people associated with UF are for the most part your usual college liberal types. But outside of that population, it's a town comprised of a bunch of Good Old Boys. This doesn't surprise me in the least. The surrounding towns (Archer, Newberry, Alachua) especially are insanely backwoods.

Agreed. South Florida is mostly comprised of transplants from either the north east US, Caribbean, or Cuba. As a result it's much more "northern" than north Florida, which is very southern. I live in Tallahassee now, which is located about 20min south of the Georgia border, and we definitely have that "southern charm" feel going on here. Gainesville is the same way (though Tallahassee is ever so slightly less redneck than Gainesville).

Basically this... though I am glad to have left Florida altogether.

What part of Florida? If they are in the southern part, they should be fine.

You don't get to determine whether you're representative of a group. That's what other people do by judging your actions.

Literally no one thinks that moderate Christians are like this. These people are right-wing uber-religious nutjob Christian fundamentalists, though, and attempting to divorce their actions from any of those motivations involves denying what's plainly obvious.

If you want to talk about "painting with a broad brush", realize that you have no problem categorizing "GAF" based on the people you feel are hostile towards Christianity, despite the fact that there are many Christian members of GAF (including fundamentalist Christians, and including yourself). The "GAF GROUPTHINK" complaint is categorically idiotic whenever anyone makes it.

No shit you condemn their actions. That isn't the point. The point is that when you read the story, your first and overriding reaction to the issue wasn't "Wow, these guys are awful", it was "I'm being persecuted by GAF groupthink".

How can you say "Literally no one thinks moderate Christians are like this" when they are posters in this thread making wide generalizations about Christians, and you don't seem to care about that at all.

I've been noticing a rather odd number of people getting banned in my threads. You're welcome, GAF.

Who are these people you're talking about?

The Gandhi quote is pretty idiotic. I can get mad at posters in here for quoting Gandhi because what Gandhi said was dumb.

Besides that, I see threenote, whose comment ("Historically, Christians like to burn books") I guess could be seen as a generalization. I guess it would be more accurate to say "Historically, there has been an element in Christianity (although not exclusively in Christianity) that has liked to burn books, and these guys are a modern day case of that"? You can ask him to edit his post if you want. I am one hundred percent certain that he does not believe that either the OP or his post is meant to describe the average Christian as opposed to the element of Christianity that is given to this practice.

We're at 135 posts and I've found literally 2 that could qualify if I approach with an eye towards trying to create controversy, both of which wouldn't qualify if I was approaching peoples posts in good faith. Who are you talking about?

I don't know where to plug this in but:

I don't think being a religious advocate/fundamentalist is necessarily bad as long as it doesn't cause harm or cause any harmful intentions. Even a few religious advocates can be perceived as moderate/good Christians because they are perceived to have strong Faith (by fellow Christians, or possibly other people).

Correct me if I'm wrong, a fundamentalist means a strict follower of the religious laws right?

I, too, am interested in the definition of a fundamentalist.

Well that's funny, because you're the first person to use the word in the thread, and the only other person besides ULTROS! and you to use the word is me directly referring to your use of the word.

Feel free to CTRL+F fundamentalist to prove me wrong, since "GAF" has used its "broad brush" to let the terminology "fly around".

The statement "fundamentalism may not be bad if it doesn't cause any harm" may be correct, but on this basis we may question whether or not any fundamental approach can ever succeed in this.

Aristotle, for example, argued towards the golden mean in one's action.

This, part of Florida is that scary kind of south you see in movies and other parts, mainly South Florida, is the most diverse culture in the US.

Uh-huh. Because noting that some people use a certain word automatically means that you know exactly what they mean by it.

How do you intend for people to argue against you when you can magically change the meaning of any word in your posts?

I'm pretty sure there are though but it's hard to do or perhaps even associate it with "pushing it", like my Church community. They have good Faith (or possibly fundamentalists according to my understanding of the definition) but are they no way pushing their beliefs towards others in a harmful way (I've met a pretty good number of them).
