Cue DeusTrinitas putting words in people's mouths and whining about GAF.

He does this all the time.

For the record, he does NOT represent any Christians, I'm one and feel no need to throw persecution-related tantrums like he does in every thread related to religion.

That being said, these Florida goons are making the world a worse place. There is nothing laudable about their message, morals, or values. There is nothing defensible here. They are bad people, bad Christians, and any criticism they get is soundly deserved.

I want to say "fuck these ugly hypocrites", because they're so clearly contravening the teachings of the being they claim to follow, but, y'know, it's been happening for a while now - like, centuries upon centuries. Ignorance is generally the precursor to evil.

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”

Zap, what happened in FLA?

this is not a good idea. maybe the muslims should organize an event the same day and burn the bible. see who can make the biggest fire or something. make it a competition. :D

I don't know what to say. Do they know quran has huge sections of text on Christ ?

That will not and should not happen. Muslim consider both bible and Torah sacred too. I have all of them in my home.
Op you forgot G,A,F? mame

Unfortunately, there was a lot of these type of people down there, at least where I was staying at the time. Also some of them are really high positions in academia, which sucked for me. :( Regardless, let's just say that I am happy that I am healthy and alive today by able to survive FL.

They also respect the Virgin Mary. I know that Islam and Christianity have a number of things in common.

Essentially, burning the Quran is basically like burning their own Bible. :|

And where in Florida was this? Would you care to name these people in high positions who were discriminating against you?

I don't know if I should name and elaborate more on the events as the school has yet to give me any compensation of the whole ordeal. :( It was an hour south of Tampa and one of the person was Dean of the school that I was attending. :\

Also, this would be much more effective if the book was actually limited, or this was before the printing press had been invented.

sadly, as soon as extremists get a hold of this I am sure they will make a nice visit to this church and hold a peaceful sitdown with everyone there

yea, i was just being silly. i'm not religious at all, but burning sacred books/texts/whatever, really is bottom of the barrel stuff.

Must have been a really really small school. Most academic institutions, even smaller less prestigious ones, are usually liberal bastions of diversity. Small, private, denominational schools would be the only ones that would immediately come to mind as having a systemic problem. This incident itself is happening in the small town of Gainesville. The metro area has a population of about a quarter mil, with half of that being students of the U of F. The people that actually live in some of these small, backwoods, places and the people attending and working at a school are usually not the same.

It just seems strange that something like this would happen in a scholastic setting. I'm not questioning the veracity of your story, though. It's just your reluctance to explain makes me... errr... question the veracity of your story.

So in order to convince Muslims to convert you will deeply offend them by burning their most sacred book? Yeah, seems logical.

Cue GAF groupthink that organizations like this church are representative of most Christians...

I predict another banning soon, if for nothing else for being an insufferable asshole.

It was a brand new private school ie DO/pharmacy school. Actually we were only the 2nd class to to get accepted into the program. Also it was very small compared to many other schools out there in FL.

I've never really understood the purpose of book burning. Oh, sure, I understand the THEORY, but ultimately you're just drawing more attention to those books.

Also funding the book's producers.

man, this kind of shit is gonna get waaay more expensive with the strong sales of e-book devices. Not to mention bad for the environment.

Alright, you do this one more time and you're permed. Whoever catches him doing it and sends me a pm (because I'm sure it'll not be long) gets a free tag of their choice.

I mean, we get caught up in this "we're all the same, human brotherhood" shit, but no. It really is way different.

I know I'm paraphrasing the quote, just wanted you to know that SOMEONE got it :)

No kidding. Every single person from Florida I have spoken to, just absolutely despises the place and wants nothing more than to leave for good. :lol

It is the toilet of the United States, it really is.

Huh. I though the US was religiously neutral (I'm not from the US). In fact, it's probably the only place I've been that's religiously neutral.

Aren't the terrorists' motivation purely economical reasons plus oppression?

Jigga what? Terrorist may have multiple sources of motivation, but they are not purely motivated by oppression and economical reasons. Don't be ridiculous.

They could burn a church or something? I know this guy with expertise on the subject..

I forgot about Jihad.

So... What are the other reasons besides oppression, economical, and religious ones?

WHAT?! Can I have one that says something about my oversized manhood? I want all the internet ladies to be impressed by my posts, and I can't think of any other way.

Oppression, Religion and economy are probably the biggest reasons I can think of - there are probably the scenarios where some do it out of a weird sense of nationalism, or misplaced blame for their poverty, but I can't think of many other reasons.

I went to high school for two years neat Tampa, FL. There were skin heads everywhere. I had to learn how to tell the difference between SHARP's (skin heads against racist people) and Skin Heads by the color laces they wore (white = Nazi, Red = SHARP). School was shut down once because windows had been broken out and swastikas were painted all over the school. The head skin head was the superintendents kid so he was untouchable. It was insane. Total culture shock. On a side note I dated a punk rock jewish girl who was friends with the head skin head at school., but agreed tehy'd kill each other outside of school. :lol It was all very confusing. This was early nineties so I just wore my long hair and flannel shirts and kept quiet.

Burning books. Yeah, nothing good has ever come out of that. Oh, burning books belonging to a particular religious sect of people. Yeah, wow, good luck with that.

Religious Extremism is definitely one of them.

See, extremism = war.

They're just scared of the heavy Muslim population growth. A population that is projected to overcome that of Christianity in my lifetime (I'm in my 20s).

Muslims don't arrange missionary trips to try to bribe poor people into converting to Islam, but even as Christians do this, missionaries complain about how Islam is still penetrating African populations. That their efforts are being subverted by Islam's expansion.

Wow that's fucking stupid.
But yes, Gaf was quick to politicize this and criticize the right. What else is new from this board?
I don't see anyone suggesting that they shouldn't have the right to do this. Unless the Quran is full of dangerous chemicals, this is clearly protected under the first amendment.

Not that it's speech I agree with, but protecting unpopular speech is the entire point of the clause.

Burning books of another religion reduces hatred between different religions.

Jumping off a cliff does not kill you.

Peeing on an electric fence is a good idea.

Stealing a cop car when you have no car is a good idea.

Mixing bleach and ammonia turns it into money.
