Releasedate : November 2nd

(PR-talk from the official website incoming:)

Football Manager is the best-selling, most realistic football management series ever made. Football Manager 2013 celebrates 20 years of games from the people at Sports Interactive by introducing an array of new features.

This year’s version allows you to take control of any club in more than 50 nations across the world and includes all of Europe’s biggest leagues as well as database of over 500,000 real-world players and staff.

You’re in the hot-seat, which means you decide on who plays and who sits on the bench, you’re in total control of tactics, team-talks, substitutions and pitch-side instructions as you follow the match live with the acclaimed 3D match engine allowing YOU to make the difference!

As well as some landmark new features in the Career Mode, there are now new ways to enjoy your Football Manager experience.

NEW TO CAREER MODE…

Match Engine
The 3D match engine has seen huge improvements this year. Everything on the pitch looks more realistic; from the stadiums, the players’ movement, intelligence, and the way the ball moves through the air.

We’ve also introduced hundreds of new animations to make the game feel more realistic and we’ve made the whole experience more televisual by introducing new camera angles and showing the kick-off and final whistle.

Manager Roles
Another notable difference is the significant restructure of the manager’s staff and a revamp of their roles. The most obvious is that we’ve introduced the position of Director of Football into the game for the first time, which will allow managers to pass on some of their workload, such as contract negotiations, if they choose to.

In addition to this, we’ve also increased the number of specialist coaching roles within the game and given the manager greater flexibility to choose which coaches offer advice and when. The manager can also choose to complain about boardroom interference – although that particular option should probably be used sparingly.

Training
This year sees a total revamp of team training, with a new simplified overview panel combining general training and match preparation. Choose your weekly team weekly, give the lads a rest after a big win or drag them into training the day after bad performance. You can now even send your coach to acquire more training badges to improve their skills and send the whole squad away on a training camp.

NEW WAYS TO PLAY…

Classic and Challenge Modes
Football Manager Classic is a less time-consuming way to enjoy Football Manager. The essence of the game is exactly the same – the manager still takes charge of a squad of players and competes at whatever level he or she chooses – but they will now find that a number of their responsibilities have either been taken over by their support staff or have disappeared completely.

For example, while the player still takes charge of training in FMC, this is carried out at a 'full team' level only – there's no individual player training. And when it gets to matches themselves, there are no team talks or opposition reports... you just go straight to a game using the same 3D match engine as Career Mode. The games are played out in a quicker 'highlights only' fashion, but you can even speed this up by going straight to ‘Instant Result’.

Players who opt for Football Manager Classic will also find that they have a couple of further options in terms of how they play the game; they can either play a full open-ended ‘Career’ or they can choose to play in the new ‘Challenge’ mode.

In Challenge mode they’ll find themselves in a particular situation which will test their management skills over a shorter game time – usually half a season. Can you win a trophy with a team consisting almost entirely of kids? Or could you guide your club to safety despite being bottom of the table at Xmas?

We first introduced Challenge Mode in Football Manager Handheld 2012 and it proved to be so popular that we’ve decided to include it in FMC too.

The game will come with four free-to-play challenges, each of which feeds in to a global leaderboard.

Network Play
The brand new Network Play is fully integrated with Steam’s network functionality which means that players should be able to set up and enjoy games against their friends far more easily than before. The Network Mode also allows people to set-up special one-off leagues and cups and to import their team from their career mode, so you can now end any debate about whose FM team is better.

The deeper integration with Steam will also allow us to manage worldwide leaderboards, so, for the first time you’ll really know how good a manager you are.

PLUS MUCH MORE…

There are more than 900 new features, most of which will be announced via a series of video blogs. The key changes include a revamp of the loans system, a major overhaul of scouting, new press conference tones and an international management revamp.

Have been playing the beta on and off, to check how everything works this time around.
And tonight I'm going to start my first real career game, at Sampdoria.

Nice OT mate :)

I've been playing it a fair bit and minus a few match engine niggles I'd say it's far better than FM2012. I'm breezing through my San Marino career, trying to raise the club profile and facilities to produce good players for the national squad so that they can win their first ever game. Got a few decent youngsters so hopefully it won't be too long!

Edit: If anyone is interested you can get graphics packs here, it fills in everything that Sports Interactive don't have licenses for. I use the metallic logos, the mega facepack and installed the kits for my active leagues. Makes things look a lot better imo:

That is straight-up PR copy paste.....

Nice Op, but I'd suggest to include this

:|

and maybe a few links to fan sites that offer skins/logo packs and other mods
I don't have a go-to website, personally, but here's a German community: http://www.meistertrainerforum.de/ which is where you'll be able to obtain lower German league files and a proper German national team file (since it's just a dummy in the vanilla game for some reason..)
Also here's the network list (although I'll probably bail out):

It's an overview of the new features, straight from their website, do you have other ideas then on how to put these in the OT ?

You are free to put whatever you want in your OT but if it is a straight copypaste of the official promo text you should maybe make a note of that.

Done.

If anyone else has suggestions on stuff to put in the OP, just let me know.

Has anyone played much of the classic mode? The last game in the series I really enjoyed was CM9798 (I know, I know) and I keep trying new versions and feeling like I'm at work.

Edit: Oops, just realised it's not out yet. Well I'll give the demo a go and see, here's the link as it's not posted yet: http://store.steampowered.com/app/207890/

If there's one game I'm actively trying to stop myself from playing, it's this game right here.

I will get it one day, but not now. Not when I'm on the verge of starting my new job. Hell, I have even deleted Football Manager 2012 from my computer. The urge is just too great.

Too all those who is starting, godspeed. I wish all of you the best. I shall join you when my time comes but at this very moment, the game is hands off. Meth might be a better choice to start.

Should we mention the decent players that can be bought for relatively little at the start of the game?

Demba Ba has a £7m release clause and Alan Dzagoev is in the last year of his contract.

Maybe you could link the Discussion roundtable in the thread for comprehensive videos on all the new features? Otherwise, thanks for making the OT!

You're free to do so ofcourse, but maybe spoiler them for anyone that wants to find out themselves?

Probably a shoo-in for my GOTY. I played for 25 hours in two days, man.

It's the first FM game I've played since 2008. But I played them all from CM 97/98. The addiction never leaves.

Mads Jorgensen forever!

94 hours for me since the start of the Beta, so a week I guess. Wasnt playing in the last 2-3 days due to other stuff, but these games definitely are addicting.

I've got 20 hours in the beta so far, thousands of hours since CM97/98 though, which was my first in the series.

This really feels like the culmination of their iterative development, so many little streamlined items that make the game flow amazingly well.

Meanwhile, here is a screenshot from about 2 mins ago. 8) Yes, the ball goes in the back of the net.

Biggest disappointment: still not having multiple balls, forcing you to watch for 30 seconds for your player to collect the ball for a corner.

I hate to use the "you're doing it wrong" but if you play Football Manager with anything other than Text Commentary Only, well...

You've got to try and make it like Championship Manager 01/02 as much as possible.

Well you are doing it wrong in this case then. I'd love a good text mode again, but the text mode in all of the current football managers are pretty boring and generally focussed around the 3D match engines.

Lol yeah, because every rl football manager closes his eyes and just listens to live commentary on the radio to make his decisions.

I was like you, 3 versions ago or something. ;)

The 3d match engine is great.

i always go to player search and put in a filter for contract expiring in one year just to see who will be potentially up for grabs. hello llorente!

My Porto is rocking along but as a word of warning to newcomers... you may wish to get your feet wet with a mega club first because transfer negotiations are much harder this year. Clubs won't sell their young talent and all of my scouts seem to only find them after they've signed a pro contract so I can't just sign them and pay $2-3m in compensation (I literally haven't been able to do this once even with 15-16 yo regens).

I highly recommend looking for a list of wonderkids and having fun trying to sign a few of them. It really is a blast to see them develop and then sell em for 5-10 times their initial cost to one of the top clubs.

Would love to hear peoples impressions of the classic mode. Seems right up my street - I still play Fm05 as it as about as complex as I can manage.

Does any one know if the demo has the classic mode in?

3D engine teaches a lot on how to improve your tactics.

I just can't help myself when I see those 5* regens.

Always have to buy a few of them.

The only 5* I've ever seen (regens included) is Kurt Zouma but he's back to a 4.5* according to my scouts. I did get a Czech (I think) right winger who was actually only estimated to be a 4* by my 20/20 guy but ended up being a 4.5*. I've had him for a full season and he still is estimated at that level so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

I've seen three so far in my save.

Although that just might be in an area where I don't have a lot of depth.

Btw does anyone think I might be a bit too stacked in attack?

My strikers are RVP/Rooney/Jovetic/Welbeck/Henriquez.

I definitely have been noticing more 4.5*'s than usual this year either way.

Porto starts out with $27m to spend but even after winning the Champions League, I only had $16m to spend the next season (although a much higher wage cap). Haven't been able to buy anyone who is established on attack due to lack of funds yet. Snagged Khouma Babacar who came in in the summer of 2013 since he was already loaned out for a season and Leandro. I blew my load on Leandro and he hasn't been quite as good as in 11 and 12. I'm only playing one striker up front with James in the hole though so that's made him a little less useful anyway as Jackson Martinez has netted 20+ goals in both of my first two seasons.

Dedryck Boyata put in a transfer request and I was able to sign him over Villa for only $4m and he came in as a 3* (4* potential) so that was nice. His wage request was very reasonable too.

Cool OT! Thanks for adding in the network list!

Thanks, I lack the photoshop skills to make it a great one, and I just hoped it would be enough for GAF.

Just started my first real career game, not at Sampdoria (as I forgot they already are in the Serie A), but at Hellas Verona.

I love bringing back notorious clubs that once were big but have fallen down into lower leagues.

First thing that stood out, 18 players on loan...

I've given up on RVP in FM. He's always injured and never scores.

Gonna sell him in January and maybe Isco too. Neither have played well for me over the course of 14 in game months.

As much as I love seeing West Ham stuff Chelsea, that screenshot is horrible. Not only do the players look like they are out of Honey I shrunk the kids, but the entire field of players are standing in midfield. No positioning at all. I understand Chelsea were all up for a last minute goal, but even the West Ham defenders should have some sense of positioning. I really don't think the 3d engine has added anything to this game

So I want to get this on mobile and PC, I have both Football Manager Handheld 2012 and Football Manager 2012 but honestly hardly touched Football Manager Handheld 2012. Was there some sort of sync between the pair?

Does any one know if the demo has the classic mode in?

For some background; I'm one of those guys that played CM3 an ungodly amount and subsequently the other CMs until the IP buyout. I also bought and played FM05 a tonne before skipping the next few iterations until FM10, which I bought also but really didn't play too much. By then the game had become well bloated and the UI is just not good enough to keep up for me (anyone know if an SSD speeds it up any?) There are far too many clicks required to look at pretty important info (players preferred roles, comparing players directly and just plain old navigating between different aspects of management. We've got huge monitors, why can't I just have several tabs or metro-style plates open with the important stuff right there on one screen?) I've also spent a stupid amount of time playing FMH on my iPhone and iPad. I frequent the SI forums a fair bit but don't post too often any more.

To your question though mate, classic mode is in the demo on Steam. I spent a few hours playing around in it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Basically it's most of the important bits without the fluff. You click continue once or twice, set up your tactics (as simple or as complex as you can handle, with or without the wizard), click continue again and you're in the 3d match (which is rather capable now - I've really enjoyed some of the director camera angles and watching my 4th tier team bang some short triangle passes around in midfield).

All the other crap is there; transfers, detailed player information, assistants and coaches up the wazoo and so on, but I managed to play to the end of the demo with Hereford Utd in 2nd place merrily without once worrying about them. So based on that shortish play around (and to be honest, I didn't go looking to find the boundaries or the shortfalls), I was impressed.

I can't stand giving team talks, or worrying about some of the minutiae (I think the current UI is hopeless for all those things and is well overdue for an overhaul, which is probably a 24 month things rather than something SI can reasonably do in 12 months), but I love farting around in tactics screens and classic mode seemed to get me to that screen pretty well.

In any event, give the demo a whirl and see if it is classic enough for you. I think there is still plenty of room for improvement though.

I find the classic skin to be super ugly, so I refrained from playing it so far - although I can easily see the appeal (thanks for the detailed description) & that will probably become my go-to mode.

Very fluid formation (4-2-3-1) paired with counter strategy and offensive duties for almost everyone except for DMs and CBs = god mode in my save, lol

What also works great is pairing different duty wingers. A winger left(s) and an inside forward right(a) also generates goals for me (however my IFs have finishing +15 so there's that)

Anyone else doing a bottom-to-top challenge?

I'm playing FC Halifax and my hope is to be in the Premier League within 6-8 seasons. £5k a week total wage budget, yo.
