For those who refuse to game on a PC, what holds you back?

I game on both equally but find all the people claiming to spend zero time solving zero headaches on PC to be laughable. There are plenty of potential issues and loads of bad ports out there. Quality is far more spotty in general.

I appreciate the advantages of both console and PC.

Physical media is probably my #1 reason why I play on console because I like having a tangible collection followed by exclusives. A bunch of franchises that used to be Playstation-only have gone PS/PC, but there are still a good amount of games that are either PS4 exclusive or Playstation exclusive.

PC is the best platform for certain genres that would play badly on console such as RTS. Mods are also a big selling point as well as being able to fiddle around with the graphical settings. Unfortunately, my work schedule requires me to have a laptop. My laptop is only "okay". On the bright side, I mainly play niche games so I don't worry about my PC being underpowered most of the time.

I game on PC all the time but actively avoid buying games that don't have full controller support.
I know steam has a built in virtual controller UI but it doesn't feel the same and certain games don't work the way I want them to let alone be as good as the console version.

Needing a controller does not apply to all types of games though.

PC doesn't have enough likeable marketing people, like Larry Hryb for Xbox. They validate my choice of gaming platform.

Oh really? Maybe Steam more than PC in general, but still...it's GabeN!

Here's the thing: when have you ever seen an actual advertisement for Steam?

To even know about Steam you have to be somewhat in the know about gaming. Blizzard at least has games mainstream enough to get TV commercials and still be sold in boxes at Wal-Mart. I don't think there's any PC game like that which requires that you install Steam. Maybe if you count the physical PC versions of the Call of Duty games but that series has been in decline on PC for a while.

So, it took me a few minutes to find that thread again.. because.. it's kind of funny....

- it's more convenient playing on consoles
- it's plug&play (well... it was...)
- you don't have to struggle around with drivers

Well... a few days later, last wednesday, to be precise, I decided to make that move on to pc gaming. Friends of mine were begging for years now (" NOW BUY A GAMING PC ALREADY!!!" ) and yeah... i saw that fascinating offer:

Specs:

Intel Core i7-6700 3.4 GHz
32 GB of DDR4 RAM
HDD 2 TB

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070

For just CHF 1270.-- (instead of CHF 1800.-- - and yes I'm swiss)

Since that day I never touched my PS4 (Pro) again xD... I'm kinda stuck in pc gaming right now and just freaking "love" those cheap prices for steam keys.... I got the Metro Redux- and Darksiders-Bundles for literally nothing (well, almost) and... damn... i still can't imagine to move completely to the pc... there are many ps4 exclusives I'm eagerly waiting for.

I'm really happy with that purchase and since i connected this nice machine to my 4k-TV (Samsung UE65JS8580) i can play as good as EVERYTHING on 4k@60fps... even DOOM on High-Settings.. which looks just mindblowing... or Horizon 3.. damn...

I still love my PS4 - but I guess once your in for a gaming pc, there are very few reasons to go back :).. and since I'm not going to play any of those highly competitive first person shooters like overwatch and so on, i'm playing almost every game with da DS4 or One-Controller (just one of many reasons I bought this gaming-pc in the end was finally being able to play games like Redout, Radial-G, GRIP and literally every SciFi-Racer on Steam). And the Turok Remaster of course :)

And... it's kind of fascinating how it's possible to almost treat this pc like a console... Steam Big Picture, Gamepad - and just play. Everything works just fine.

Joined the Masterrace and I love it :-). That said, I'm 32 years old and am playing videogames since I was 6 years old. I never really played on pc or purchased a gaming pc. And now - here I am :).

Sorry for the long post - you'll get no potato :-).

Enjoy it. I encourage you to seek out types of games you've never played before. There are so many more genres and variety available.

Thank you!

And yep, that's the plan I guess. It's also the plan of my friens it seems. Because I finally bought a gaming pc they made me steam presents like

- Homeworld Remastered Collection
- Civilisation V
- Everspace
- and some more

I'm really humbled and looking forward to play especially those strategy games I otherwise completely and intentional ignored (well.. as a console gamer ... :P)

Awesome man, glad to hear. Yea it's typically what happens when people make the switch, and I've seen very few times when someone switches and isn't really happy, most are.

Like I said from get go, it's really easy to run a Pc anymore and gaming is a treat on it.

Nice post. Yeah this is often the case when getting into PC gaming. Feels good getting out of the gated experience that the consoles give you, and be able to have more flexibility in your hobby.

fo sho man. Hes now spending his life hunched back over a desk, on the most uncofortable chair in the world. He just HAS to spend HOURS upon hours of tinckering, he edits ini files, he updates drivers contantly. He spends more time tweaking options than playing, updating drivers ten times a day. He also spends so much money now upgrading his system like twice a week, cause he just has to stay on top of the game otherwise its not cool. All the smart things console users say about pc are totally valid and legit.

Most of those exclusives do nothing for me. Steam gaming is the biggest garbage bin outside mobile gaming.

maybe you should actually play them instead of talking from the sidelines? Older games since the beggining. Entire GENRES that are only or were born and grown on PC - hard to think thousands of the best games ever made do nothing for you.

Nice! Welcome to the club, I'm new too. Do you keep this in your living room with your consoles? You talk about a lot of mouse based games.

Joking aside, since getting my first gaming PC a month ago I've spent more hours dealing with defective software and driver problems than I had hoped, but still plenty of time.

It's not like the days of boot disks and changing autoexec.bat but it's not always guaranteed to work without problems.

Sadly money. I have no screen, keyboard or anything so even a midrange rig with all that will set me back quite a bit. I love my laptop as a gaming platform, but I simple got no cash to get a gaming laptop or a midrange PC. I got a Ps4 because it was cheap. 150 for a refurbished one with 2 games. It also allows me to play the exclusive Digimon and Kingdom Hearts games I want to. I'd rather have a big gaming PC along side it, but as for right now that isn't possible.

But none of them has shiny graphics and most of them require you to think, so they do nothing to the average console player.

I technically game on PC, but only old games and emulators (I have a non-gaming ultrabook). The reason I don't have a gaming pc and don't play on steam, is because fewer games excite me these days, I don't care about graphics much, so investing in a pc in addition to a console is not a good investment for me.

Hell, I don't even own a current gen console, but everyone and their mother has a PS4 here in Europe, so I still get to play if I feel like it.

I'll probably either get a PC or a Scorpio/new console when TES: VI rolls around, though. It's about the only game I'm looking forward to at the moment. It's also far away, it seems.

I always cycle between consoles and PC. Right now, my ps4 pro can play better looking games than my PC. Once I get a new one, I'll be getting the PC versions of the games I buy.

I wish there was a rental service for PC games. Gamefly is fantastic and saves me a ridiculous amount of money on single player games and "demoing" multiplayer focused games that are on the PC. I rented Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2, and if I end up liking them, I'll get the PC versions when I upgrade.

Thx for your kind words :-)

lol, not until now. No.

But yes - that one Windows Update was of course annoying as hell. But this isn't really gaming-related.

Nice! Welcome to the club, I'm new too. Do you keep this in your living room with your consoles? You talk about a lot of mouse based games.

Yes - the pc stands right beside the ps4 in my gaming-/entertainment room. I'm sitting in a comfortable chair and use a wireless keyboard/mouse combo (keyboard is placed on my legs and the mouse itself is situated on a even smaller "kitchen chair" ---- lol I know this sounds stupid, but it's really comfortable to text/chat with people and steam etc. is also easy to use this way.

And no it's not the definitive solution for my little Mouse :-).

What mousebased games do you mean? Homeworld Remastered Collection & Civilisation V? Well - the last RTS-game I played was Total Annihilation back in the days... so that's a long long time ago. These two would mark my first strategy / mousebased games since then.

I really prefer gamepad controls over keyboard/mouse. And I have to admit that I don't play competitive MP-Shooters like Overwatch. I'm kind of "retarded" when it comes to keyboard-controls lol. I REALLY tried that DOOM Demo on Steam with keyboard /mouse... I just can't handle that... this kind of control feels really like a hurdle for me. It's mostly shooter-related - Strategy Games aren't a problem this way of course.

But really - for all other genres, including RPGs, Racers, Action-Adventures, Jump 'n' Runs I really really prefer a gamepad. It just fits so much better and feels more natural. Some can't handle my opinion - but it's really about my individual preferences.

On the other hand I really cannot imagine how someone could play a game like redout with a freakin' keyboard... I mean... you're speeding with 1100km/h and want to control that with keyboard-buttons? That's against everything I believe in xD (but don't take that too serious :) ).

Now there are soo many people shouting at me things like "what? are you serious? now you have a pc and you're using a gamepad? whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa".....well - I guess for some reason there's a big picture mode, and native support for xbox one and ps4 gamepads. There's a principle called "supply & demand" ... :-)... and therefore I'm probably not the only one prefering to use a gamepad for some games :-).

For me is the input method.I like to play with a controller i don't like m&k.When all the games have controller support i'm going to fully jump to the pc despite i have a gaming pc right now.

I mean, most new releases (since the 360 era) have controller support. Steam also introduced 360/X1/PS4/Generic controller support, making it possible to play just about any game with a controller.

what console-like game doesnt feature controller support on PC?

Serious question?

Well... it's not a 20 years old TV... it's a relatively new UHD. And there's magic called HDMI. There are HDMI cables. Boom

:-).

Ahh, I remember the olden days of having to configure your pc for displaying on a tv.
Good times.

Glad it's gone though, love the plug and play.

This is absolutely gone :-)

Just hooked it up on the tv and the two devices communicated via HDMI. PC automatically displayed at 3840x2160@60hz. All I had to do was adjusting the picture-settings on the TV (most important: Switchig to Game Mode and pull down sharpness) and the scaling of the Windows OS (300% was a little bit too much MS :) ).

That's all. It was really easy.

Picture Quality is just fine and I guess my TV is very generous in providing low input lag in game mode :).

Hardly any.

Tends to affect older titles like Oblivion, or ones where they didn't bring the console controls across like Mass Effect (modable) or Planetside 2 (which is unplayable on TV anyway due to the tiny UI on PC).

I've not really needed to break out my Steampad yet though, which is a testament to support. Ideally, if I never had to use a keyboard or touchpad/mouse again on my PC, I'd love it. If I get a Chromecast/Amazon Stick Thing for the front room too, I'll be able to pretty much relegate the PC to a games machine.

This type of garbage reminds me of the awful attitudes of many PC gamers. It's an ugly and obnoxious side of the hobby.

As opposed to the enlightened, open minded, and respectful views portrayed in this very thread buy some console gamers, right?

Like, all PC exclusive games are "garbage", for example.

Loads if you look at games that are from the pre-ps3/360 era. Gta San Andreas was a mess last time I checked for example.

Well... I beg to differ. Releases from the last couple of years had improved their controller support a lot, I'll give you that.

Couple of years? Try over half a decade.

I just went ahead and tested out GTA San Andreas on Steam. It works perfectly fine with my Logitech F310 gamepad.

Maybe it works fine, but steam still doesn't show it as having controller support. Key mapping so the controller works is not the same as having controller support...

I don't play anything without gamepad support.

Even the ones that do often have something annoying. Horizon 3 now launches in windowed mode and must be switched back EVERY time. Many unity games start with a mouse based window launcher.

'Native' PS4 gamepad support is terrible and I ended up needing DS4Windows.
I played a 2D game recently called Castle in the Darkness whose which I ended up having to setup keyboard mapping profile with ZXC key emulation. Quite a mess.

Also anyone that suggests you map mouse controls to PS/XB gamepad is a menace.

I didn't use key mapping. Here's the in game controller option menu. Why not go ahead and try it yourself ?

I've never refused to play on PC, and have a fair number of PC games, but it's always been a pain in the butt for me. So this will be off topic.

If a game runs poorly on a console I instantly accept it and move along, in my head placing the blame on the developer. If a PC game runs poorly I place the blame on myself, for not building a better PC, or not maintaining it well enough, or not tweaking the settings or driver the right way. I always have the perception that any problem or hiccup is my fault and something I can fix. Sometimes I will waste all my game time for that day to get a game to run more smoothly, or make my gamepad work when the game was really made to support gamepads besides the 360 one. Sometimes I get a game that just works flawlessly right away, but most of the time I just can't be at ease with PC games.

This is not an excuse. PC gamers should be bigger if they consider themselves bigger
So much this - and not just related to PC gamers...

I mean.. For me, Gaming is not just a Hobby - it's a god damn (sorry) Passion. And why in the name of all gaming gods am I supposed to play a game in a way that's not convenient to me? Because it's an unwritten law to play game XY with keyboard/mouse?

Yep - come on. We're all better than this.

I'm looking at those specs and I'm just wondering, how much did you pay for that?
I feel like you were over-sold on the RAM, which isn't cheap nowadays. Everything else is really good, considerably better than my PC.

As I have written: CHF 1270, which currently is about $1272 or EUR 1189

And 32GB of RAM is.. kinda better as 16GB? :).. I mean... I don't have to worry about RAM for a long time, do I?

The GeForce GTX 1070 alone is currently half the price of my whole set... so I guess the price was more than good.

It's not like I actively avoid playing on PC, but for me the ability to have physical media and have the game always work without having to try and troubleshoot settings or whatever else may be an issue outweighs the benefits offered by a dedicated gaming PC. For example, I haven't been able to get CIV V to work on my computer at all, and literally nothing I've done or been told to do by others has done anything to help. I just prefer the simplicity of console gaming.

The sheer number of steps to run ( and applying the optimum settings and not that geforce experience bs ) games on pc is very distracting from playing a game and having fun . Whereas on consoles put a disc and play ..

As sad as it may seem, the sheer elitisist attitude given off from alot of PC players just kills any interest I have in PC as a platform. I know it's basically a meme at this point, but it always shocks me how many PC players seem eager as hell to mock someone who plays on a console, as if they have any reason to care about what platform someone else uses to play games. You can see it in this thread.
