For those who refuse to game on a PC, what holds you back?

because i like simple things, consoles offer easy and simple ways to play, just log in and play, all the other console players have the same performance and fairness, no hackers

console exclusives are much MUCH better than PC exclusives

i enjoy playing on a couch

all you need for console is just 1 account, all the games are in one store, in PC, it's annoying, multiple account, multiple stores, multiple emails, lots of ports are broken like Dishonored 2, Batman, Forza Horizon 3 and many more

and to those who say graphics, do i have to remind you of Uncharted 4 ?

You can buy a gaming PC for less than 500€ that is superior to any console in the market and will last much longer than any of them. This is not the 90's or early 00's, tech doesn't get outdated in two years.

For one you are not tied to arbitrary console cycles that decide when your machine becomes outdated and stops getting games; for another you get access to every game of the past generation at the resolution and framerates you want.

For the record I'm not advocating going PC-only, especially if you take gaming seriously and don't want to miss on exclusives.
Oh dont get me wrong i know that to beat console specs you dont need to spend that much but if i am going to build my own pc im going to want to do it right and not skimp on things that i might regret later on.

So while i can get a PC that is better than a console it still means spending more money than i would on a console and having to deal with potential issues that i wont with consoles. I have seen friends go the PC route and every single one has either had problems with parts, drivers, optimisation etc. and for me i would much rather buy a console, plug it in, hook it up to the internet and then let it do everything it needs to without any further input from me again.

The only real things i miss by not going PC is some exclusives but to be fair i dont have enough time to juggle all the console games i have let alone adding another platform :)

Ease of Access. I was playing Dragonquest Builders with my mom an hour ago on her big TV and there would be various obstacles involved in doing that with a PC tower. It's super easy to plug in my PS4 and get everything set up with a gamepad.

I mean...they make console-like form factors for PC's.

I guess a lot of people are just misinformed. I'm not surprised though, it's been this way since PC gaming happened.

I have a half decent pc in my living room last game implayed through was doom 2016. However when both nms and deus ex ran like ass I decided I'm sticking with my PS4 pro until I can afford another upgrade.

Before I built mine:

- Initial price is expensive.
- Worried about building it. Lots of things could go wrong. Parts are fragile.
- Windows, software updates, drivers, things not compatible for any number of reasons.
- Having to play around with a million video settings to get a game to work wasn't appealing compared to just disc in and play on consoles.

I don't avoid it, I used to mostly play on PC. However currently I only play on my Xbox.

It mostly comes down to convenience and just the fact that I'm quite lazy. To game on the PC I'd need to:

- Buy a gaming capable PC which would cost a lot of money which I'm not willing to spend.

OR

- Build a gaming capable PC which would cost a fair amount of money and a lot of time which I'm not willing to spend.

Also I found that when I did play games on PC i spent far too much time worrying whether the game I was buying would run well. Before buying a game I'd have to worry about whether or not my set of specs were within the requirements (a number of games I wanted to buy I didn't because i didn't think I could run them) and when I did buy a game I'd constantly be fiddling with settings to find the ideal set.

Obviously I could get around this by getting a high spec PC but that costs more money and won't necessarily be high spec within a few of years.

There's also all the faff with drivers and updates which are nowhere near as smooth as on a console. Solving random errors and crashes etc.

Basically a console is just easier.

Also Halo.

I still see alot mentioning a couch, I simply have an hdmi running from my Pc to my receiver and game on my cozy chair with my ps4 controller. I mean it simply doesn't get any more consoleish than that.

Doing nothing but surfing youtube and forums and my PC could crash.

I can't imagine the ballache of 'getting a game to work' would be like.

Unless you're willing to come down and fix it whenever it happens.

Because fixing shit on a PC is infuriating.
THIS!!!!! An it's annoying when PC gamers act like this isn't the case. They say " I've never had much trouble", well either you are a liar or you atleast know a friend/person who has had a terrible experience fixing shit on a pc. It's fine that you love it but atleast be honest.

But honestly it doesn't happen anymore, it really doesn't. I been Pc gaming since the early 90s and those days it was infuriating with jumpers, and irq settings and all kinds of bullshit.

But now, it's not even a thought and I don't say that casually because I really don't have the patience anymore for that stuff

I've played on handhelds and consoles all my life. I like the ease of use. Having to worry if my PC can play the game is something I don't want to think about which is why I don't have big or demanding games like Ori, and Evoland 2.
Also upgrading PCs is expensive. I also have a Surface Pro 4.

not another one of these threads. OP your intentions my be good but topics like this seem to be a little disingenuous to me.

I mean the answers are so obvious why people choose a console over a PC?

exclusives
ease of use
price of entry
brand loyalty
where their friends are

I'm almost 100% PC exclusive these days but the friends I have that are not seem to be put off by the relativly high initial cost and the sheer number of hardware options available. The other obivous factor is the exclusives, which funnily is the exact reason why I swaped to PC. I'm much more into simulation/strategy games than I'm into your typical console exclusive. It all comes down to preference. I can also admit that I'm a total performance nerd and as far as I'm concerned, consoles just don't cut it.

But yeah, gaming on either platform is of course fine but I have to say that some of the misconceptions about PC gaming are still prevalent. It's really not a driver, updating, crashing and expensive hell some people make it out to be. Sure it has its kinks and I can understand not wanting to deal with any.

It's amazing how people here use "PC has no interesting exclusives" as an argument. Yeah, fuck the entire strategy and isometric RPG genre, right?

Then, don't? I mean, no one's forcing you to upgrade. If you buy a good gaming PC now, it's not suddenly going to be obsolete in a year or two. You might not get 'ultra high' graphics, but you'll also not get that with consoles.

Not everyone has to like the games you like.

Also, can you blame people for thinking PCs don't have a ton of great exclusives when Valve will let whatever trash someone throws together on Steam?

I have a laptop. Maybe I'll get a desktop again one day but for now the money went on a nice laptop that is good enough for work and stuff.

Think I might jump back in when the screens become a nice price for quality and performance.

In before that one dude who is grudgingly sitting all day long on front of a computer screen and only wants to relax on couch when he gets home. His own PC is always broken for some reason even though he fixes them at work.

Honestly troubleshooting PC stuff is so easy now that anything that isn't straight forward is a super simple google search away

And let's not all just pretend that consoles are completely free of issues. I've probably had more frustrating system level issues with my PS4 than I have with my PC

Not everyone has to like the games you like.

No one has to like the same games, but writing of countless PC exclusive titles as uninteresting is such a broad and stupid generalisation. There's a difference

1) Switched to Nintendo a while ago.
2) Never had a powerful enough PC + It's a pain to make it work sometimes compared to other hardware.

3) Maybe in the future. At least I should have some more choice.

Everything about a PC holds me back, really. Physical games are more or less dead, there's a lot of games that I can't play on PC and playing PC games in general feels disgusting to me.

I was big in to PC around mid 360/PS3 era and I started worrying about the performance of the game more than the game itself. I started to notice ever single hiccup and kept thinking I can make this better. I like the ease of buying a system and buying a game with no additional fuss. Essentially I got lazy, but at the same time Iam enjoying games way more now than I did during that time.

People having different experiences from you = liars. Nice!

I just don't feel any interest in getting into another major ecosystem like that when i'm already invested enough in one, especially considering my old laptop from 2009 is not at all equipped to play games and i have no knowledge or particular experience in playing games on a PC to begin with.

For the most part, Sony has the right games and does the right things enough of the time for me to not really feel unsatisfied where i play.

That's without the basic viewpoint of just being able to have the console, turn it on and put in a disc or digital download. I've heard nightmare stories of people fiddling with games for ages trying to get them to work to no avail, weird DRM restrictions depending on the game, unpredictable performance and glitches ect

I knew someone would say that ok here.

This is someone having trouble with battlefield 1 a game that launched not in the 90s but a few months ago yet ppl have trouble launching it.
The other one is someone having trouble with dishonored 2 yet another 2016 game not a 90s one. Idc of its a " quick fix man" I'm not tryna deal with ANY of it and a lot of gamers aren't either. Plz PC dudes atleast admit it happens. My best friend games on pc he helps ppl alll the time with issues. It is reality even if YOU personally don't experience it.

i have a dope PC hooked up to my TV and it's still nowhere near as convenient. you're kidding yourself if you think it is.

i love PC gaming but the fiddliness is a fundamental part of the hobby.

This seems a bit harsh, like they make you physically ill? Only time I got that were with some Vita exclusives...

I own a mac

Besides the prospect of gaming I have no desire to own a pc.
Also I like just getting a console and not worrying about upgrading anything until the gen is over.

Then again I upgraded to a PS4 Pro recently
So maybe next go around I'll reconsider. The idea of PS/PC/Nintendo is starting to seem more beneficial.

These threads drive me nuts with all the misinformation that gets tossed around.

I don't care about better PC graphics
:
that's fine, I don't always either. Most AAA games look and run better on PC sure, but I actually like PC more due to the insane amount of smaller games and indie titles you can't get anywhere else.

I want exclusive games:
I love my PS4 Pro, it gets some great games, but PC has more "exclusives" than all consoles ever made combined. By the way, you can emulate most of those older consoles.

I like couch gaming:
I've done that plenty with my PC, it's super easy. Steam Link or long HDMI cable take care of that. Console gaming is still better for that though, since ALL games are designed with controller in mind.

I hate Windows:
Honestly it doesn't require that much interaction just for gaming.

Drivers, configs, installations:
Uh, yeah those aren't normal issues. Steam is a major thing these days. You buy your game, download and play. Only drivers I ever update are Nvidia, and you just download and install. If it's a buggy release, just undo it.

Don't wanna upgrade every 2 years:
The don't! It's nice to have the choice, but you don't need to upgrade every 2 years. Many people are gaming just fine on their 5+ year old stuff, especially CPUs and such.

It's too expensive: You can build a cheap PC, but in my opinion that's missing the point, so yeah expect to pay more than $500+ for something decent. $1000 for something amazing. it's about choice.

Oh, and many people talk like it's PC or console. I play more on PC, but still spend lots of time on consoles too. It doesn't have to be one or the other. I love both.
PC + Sony + Nintendo = Gaming Heaven.

Just sold my pc after 7 years pc gaming. It was a decent rig i7 6700k 780ti sli. It was my third cpu and probably 4th gpu. Probably spent close to £3000 on it over the last 3-4 years especially. Felt I needed to upgrade gpu again and just wasn't getting the return on my investment.

If it was a linear curve of pc power to better graphics then maybe but it just seems a bit better. Plus 30fps doesn't seem as bad on my new Samsung as it did on my oled.

So yeah playing a lot of exclusives on ps4 pro and xbox one s and really enjoying it. Hdr looks great and with scorpio on the way I'll be happy and I really don't miss the shoddy ports or fixing problems on pc. Consoles ain't that bad if you have a nice hdr tv.

See to me they're all one in the same anymore. Back in the early days yes you had pcs, and consoles were simply slide a cart in or a disk and you play.. Now they're basically the same with all the shit they can do.

Pc and consoles are similar vehicles for gaming, it's just one can push alot more visually.

But still in the thread here I still see alot of the misconceptions and I just sort of have a hard time understanding. If someone says i just don't want to, that's fine but some of the reasons are still a little confusing

I don't care about gaming enough to invest time and money in getting the absolute 100% best experience. I'm happy gaming on consoles. It's convenient.

Every hardcore gamer needs to have a PC.

There are so many exclusive games that you will never hear of due to lack of marketing budget, but will absolutely blow you away in terms of gameplay depth and design.

Two of my games of the year in 2016 were RimWorld and Factorio, but you would have never heard of those games unless you are paying attention to word of mouth.

While I don't refuse to play on PC. I play WoW, Starcraft, Heroes of the Storm, Stardew Valley and a few other games that is all based on what I can play on my Laptop. I tried to play the Halo Wars 2 Beta on my laptop this weekend and the graphics card was below the minimum. I have a desktop upstairs, which I use to have hooked to my TV. Wife put an end to that. Basically it is ease of use, money in upgrading the PC, and my current library.

There are some fascinating misconceptions surrounding PC gaming illustrated in this thread that I thought had been long since buried. I don't mean to say that in order to call anyone's preference out, but honestly, it feels like I'm reading a thread from 10 years ago.

so to the PC users in this thread. Please explain to me the processes i would need to take in order to get a console experience from a PC.

in this hypothetical scenario i have bought a good pc, i want to play on the couch, i want to switch on the pc with my pad and i want to launch directly in to my game library from which i can play my games.

I play a bit on PC, but I don't think I will ever completely disregard console for PC. I love the platform for more casual and multiplayer stuff, along with indies that don't always come to console, but I haven't bought a AAA game on PC since bioshock infinite due to wanting to play at a TV. I know I can do that on PC, but that requires hooking up my laptop (which contrary to popular belief, kind of a pain in the ass) and due to my setup steam link just would not work. I also just hate having to troubleshoot why a game won't work when I buy it.

Money.

I love PC games (the total war and starcraft series) but money holds me back. My 4 year old PC has to suffice which means I can't play the latest total war games (warhammer and atilla) but I hope in a few years I might be able to upgrade.
.

The games I care most about are either exclusive to consoles or release first on console. I checked my top 10 favourite games of the last 5 years and only one of them released on PC day 1 (Witcher 3), I also looked at my amazon wishlist for upcoming games and from 11 games only Nier Automata is scheduled for a PC release.
So it's an easy decision to not pay too much attention to PC gaming, I only really use it for Blizzard games.

I don't really care too much about the inherent advantage of set hardware and don't consider pc gaming on the couch a barrier, it's simply just a matter of consoles having games I consider better.
