Ex Wipeout Devs Bring Formula Fusion To PC, PS4 And Xbox One

For reasons known only to Sony, Wipeout developers Studio Liverpool were closed before the PlayStation 4 launch and any hope of a Wipeout game for the new console vanished.

Sony’s loss is Microsoft’s gain as some of the developers from the defunct studio reformed as R8Games and they have released some rough footage of their new PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 racing game.

It features hovering vehicles which zip around on neon infused tracks whilst pumping dance music written by “cool urban artists” pound out of the speakers. Why does that sound familiar?

“We have a few interesting spins on the core concept and we are pulling it back a little in terms of the Sci-fi ness of the art. To try and make it more RAW and Craft based – similar to the tech/teams in F1 – rather than loosing it’s charm by dressing it up with generic far future style,” explained R8Games.

You may note the trailer calls the game Slamjet Racing, that was changed to rather more dull but more descriptive Formula Fusion as of yesterday.

If this supports Oculus Rift and force feedback wheels on PC it could be AMAZING!!

wat.

anyways, excited to see what this looks like! :)

Wipeout HD 2.0?

Looks amazing. Rotten luck that Sony hasn't already announced a digital download Wipeout for PS4.

Dub FX has me REALLY excited, but as a big fan of Wipeout there just seems something a little off about this. It pretty much looks exactly the same, but I wish they'd stuck with PS4 exclusivity to really push the limits of the console.

Clapping hands with glee.

I don't like how the ships seem to skid sideways when turning... Or I guess it just looks like drifting. But Wipeout has typically been just about the polar opposite of drifting for me that it looks weird

The gameplay looks lackluster and very linear, but of course it's early days. Visuals are nice apart from the car designs, will keep an eye out for this one.

Looks very early, but it's difficult to describe how happy this makes me. Futuristic racers have been a part of my life since childhood, starting with Extreme-G on the N64 (and I know it goes further back for others), it felt incredibly disheartening to think that all these studios that used to pump these racers out were gone.

Looking forward to seeing how this evolves

I have very similar impressions of the gameplay. also the movement of the pods appears very stiff and not 'floaty' enough. I'll keep an eye on it though, huge WipEout fan!

But really, don't be too excited, because there's a lot of "former WipEout" devs nowadays – R8 Games, Playrise Digital, Sawfly Studios, Firesprite, and some people still work for Sony in Evolution Studios.

It does almost look like a mario kart slide. It looks very static right now. My ideal AG racer would actually model the thrust and air brakes in each direction so that the ships bounced around an uneven track.

I agree, but you could technically say that Sony might be losing out on extra sales they might've had if people could only buy it on PS.

Any sales of this game on the PS4 is basically just profit for Sony. Otherwise they would have to put up money for the production of Wipeout, and likely lose money on the endeavor. It's obvious that there wasn't a large enough fanbase on just Playstation platforms for a game like this to be successful. Hopefully being multiplatform will bring the team more success.
