Former WipeOut devs announce new futuristic racer....Formula Fusion

Ehhh, the head up display looks kind of off to me. But other than that, OH HOLY LUCIFER, SON OF SATAN, THE WIPeOUT TEAM IS BACK! Now...give us Zone Zeus...hell, give it to us in Oculus/Morphius.

Just so people are aware, I will just quote what is written on the Youtube page.

A glimpse at the PRE-PRODUCTION, 'visual and early gameplay' treatment for Formula Fusion. (formally known as Slam Jet - branding in the process of being changed). Not representative of final gameplay.

They probably haven't even decided on what the game is actually going to be yet.

I will reserve judgement. Doesn't look as good as Wipeout but Wipeout had a very distinctive style, and it must be hard to come up with something just as good while trying to do your own thing. Plus this is all pre-production stuff so they're probably still working on everything.

One thing I would recommend for future trailers, though: less Venom class, more PHANTOM CLASS. Looks slow as molasses and we can't have people thinking the game is for babies who don't like speed!

I love the first couple wipeouts, but grew tired of the series. Hopefully this new IP will give them the opportunity to get a little more creative. I wish them the best of luck.

I thought the Firesprite guys were the Wipeout guys. I guess studio liverpool has spawned many studios, all with Wipeout heritage.

Frankly, F-Zero is the only futuristic racer that will get attention from most gamers. It's time, Nintendo. 30 players online or forget it.

i realize they're promoting the game by going 'hey wipeout', but i don't think it makes sense to expect that level of quality. you just can't replicate that complete vision and execution now liverpool is dead. just consider it a rare new futuristic racing game and welcome competition to fast racing neon.

I'll take it. It's not like there are a lot of futuristic racers right now. I am still pissed that Sony closed them and who knows if we will ever get another Wipeout.

It looks like WipEout, but the visual design isn't quite on the same level, let alone the music, and the racing speed seems slow. I welcome any futuristic arcade racer though. It's not like there's an overabundance of them.

WHERE'S MY DESIGNERS REPUBLIC?

Not to mention CoLD SToRAGE!?

Huge fan of the franchise.
So much so that the game always got me to buy the PS hardware starting with the PS1.
Well not the PS2 and PS4 obviously. :-/
There's little more that I would want than getting WipEout back on it's feet again with the original talent. (Well besides returning Sega to their former Saturn/DC glory)
But this is looking very rough. Might be a mistake to show footage in the state that it's in right now. But then again what do I know?

There's a ton of work to be done and I don't want to get my hopes up as it's so easy to screw up the formula. Just look at Fusion and 2048. :(

Interesting, wonder how it will compare with FAST racing neo. I also like how FRN releases like nothing for years, and this gets announced with a trailer.

Looks slow, but a lot less floaty than Wipeout.
Hopefully they crank the speed up and take some inspiration from F Zero's mechanics.

I don't like how the ships seem to skid sideways when turning... Or I guess it just looks like drifting. But Wipeout has typically been just about the polar opposite of drifting for me that it looks weird

I agree, I would assume the ships to lean, as opposed to swivel in place. Almost feels like they just took an arcadey formula 1 racing model and made the cars hover higher, while erasing the wheels.

Overall, the game looks nice, but doesn't seem to have a killer sense of speed. I hope it turns out good, because a new wipeout type game would be awesome.

"Our game is Formula Fusion...though we're thinking of changing the name."

Still, if that's only the alpha build, I only have high hopes in what they have in mind.

I saw the thread title and I came here to ask where can I preorder the PS4 version. Someone please call Cold Storage!

Fake edit: Video needs more sense of speed, but other than that looks great for me. As a Wipeout fan, I'm in. I don't like both game names, but who cares.

Looks slow and driving looks dumb, but it definitely has the Wipeout look (too much maybe, can they do it?), excited for more news.
I would be more excited for a real Wipeout on PS4, though, and honestly I'm going to be very pissed off with Sony if it doesn't happen sooner or later.

Apart from those years when wipe out didn't exist
Obviously. But when WipEout did exist it was much bigger than F-Zero. It was a huge hit on PS1 and a moderate success for the next two generations, as opposed to a moderate success on N64 and a huge flop on GameCube.

fixed!!!!!!!

Someone should edit into the OP that it is pre-production footage and doesn't represent the final game. That would get rid of lots of dumb comments.

Will reserve judgement on this, as it's clearly a very early trailer.

I mean, the "car" design is debatable and the way they slide around on the tracks is quite offputting to be honest... but that's why I'll wait for a proper release trailer.

Also, heh, dubfx managed to claw his way into a videogame. Only took what, 5-10 years or so? Good going, man.

I will buy this, although it looks slow - but I will say leveling up and XP systems is not what wipeout needed to expand. I guess this isn't actually wipeout, maybe it will work better for it.

What [wipeout] needed was a sweet training mode.

The main problem was people found the game hard.

As good as Zone mode was, it wasn't a training mode. It was punishing as hell lol.

A training mode with that level of style and commitment would have helped so much. Laps are training, but people find it hard still.

A mode where the race track was visible but the rest of the map was wire-frame or washed out so you can focus on the track. Change speeds on the fly without exiting the training mode. Be able to rewind and take corners again. Maybe even some stylish racing lines.

And then proper skill-level matchmaking online, ideally with leagues.

-And where are the corners? - saw a few good ones at the end after it went black the first time.

Hope they get that sense of speed down. Think it was quite hard to do with WipeOut as the vehicles float, but they always got it spot on. This still looks early.

I miss WipeOut so much. The only racer I like.

Hmm... the racers look like Formula One cars with the wheels taken off. And they don't have the floaty feel of Wipeout, especially lacking chassis roll when cornering. But I'm hopeful. I wanna believe!

Looks slow and physics on cars look very off. If they fix that they got a crazy good game on their hands.

I think this is their way of solving the futuristic racing being too hard.

Slow cars, straight tracks.

Nice visuals...

Hopefully I'm just worrying about nothing and they'll cover the fans with super high-speeds that they aren't showing yet.

From the Youtube comments

R8 Games Limited said:
Thanks for the comments guys (and gurls). It 'is' PRE-PRODUCTION and it was created to trigger feedback from the Wipeout communities (although we want to create a game that is very much our own IP and not living in the shadow of Wipeout). Perhaps it was a little too early to release this into the general communities - but its encouraging that the crits are things we are working on and we are very much aware of. Best R8 Team.

They show a glimpse of some corners:

Hopefully it's slow so people can see what's going on.

You can't really blame them for making it a bit more arcade, if they do. Hopefully they still have the crazy fast out of control in a split second feeling at higher levels. It looks like it could still be a lot of fun, but that boost giving the extreme speed in a straight line with a massive blur seemed a bit worrying too.

UI looks bad, hopefully it's placeholder, sense of speed seems low.

excited though. they should've just called it AG Racing like they refer to in the trailer.
