The big flaw here is that McLaren and Ferrari are so fast the others teams have no chance of getting ahead of them anyways. And McLaren for Ferrari too

With all the insane shit these teams haul around from country to country, tires should be a non issue from qualy to race. Sure, limit tires in practices so they don't burn through them, but once your times start to matter, the difference between 5 sets of tires and 8 sets of tires is nothing with how much money is thrown around at absolutely nothing in this sport. It is just another awful addition to the F1 rule set that obfuscates everything that is exciting about motor racing. This new qualifying format is embarrassingly bad.
